This same averaging business can be used on slopes quite generally which I think is why we're always hunting the extreme slopes.

At the OCA thread on adjustable ships, there was a discussion of spaceships with fixed speed and adjustable period. They consist of a spaceship bouncing back and forth between two copies of another spaceship, like this one with a c/2d ship between two c/2o's:

For the record, this one has adjustable speed because the bounce reaction advances the spaceships (one gen for the c/2d and two gens for the c/2o). The post did include a fixed speed 2c/3 with adjustable period though. That's unfortunate. There would either need to be a reaction which doesn't affect the phase of the glider or two reactions with effects that cancel out - one advancing and one retarding.
The 5S project (Smallest Spaceships Supporting Specific Speeds) is now maintained by AforAmpere. The latest collection is hosted on GitHub and contains well over 1,000,000 spaceships.

Semi-active here - recovering from a severe case of LWTDS.

How, uh, by the way did you come up with the original? Do you have something that can search for ships with singleton errors or something?
Indeed, it seems strange that there was a part that was off by one cell after 5 generations. Luckily it was fixable in this case.

Thanks for your constant support and fixes of my errors! I'm a little overworked and thus spend less attention on search setup and results and make silly mistakes.

Now what is missing is the other corner. Here I even lack promising partial results so far. If we find that, then I would call another milestone reached in 2c/5 greyshipology, as I'm convinced this is the stepest possible descent reachable with period 5.

Then only a 2c/5 grey stretcher would be missing.

The (2,1)c/6 spaceships provide a number of accessible sparks. For a (2,1)c/6 puffer, I'd suggest starting with this reaction where a Sir Robin tuns a LWSS into a B. A spark on the ragged minstrel can turn the output glider into a loaf.

3c/7 is strictly below the vacuum speed limit, whereas (2,1)c/6 is exactly at the speed limit.

Assuming you consider the inner three columns as fixed this is a thinnest result (14 more columns, other variants of *WSS-looking tail interactions possible) starting from the two row slice I chose. It's of course possible there are thinner repeating options that don't pass through that two row slice.
