New Heisenburp Reaction

I have found a new Heisenburp reaction that is best done at multiples of p46.
Code: Select all
x = 72, y = 74, rule = B3/S23

The circled glider is the triggering glider.
Can anybody make a full gun set? Here is my best attempt:

Very nice. Here's a completed gun using this reaction (very closely based on your partial gun):

Edit: Is this the first heisenburp in which the glider does not get destroyed and then recreated by the reaction, but rather just keeps on trucking without really even noticing?

THANK YOU!!!!!!!!!! OMG I AM ECSTATIC AND DESSERPED AT THE SAME TIME!!!!!
Also thank you for showing me the p184 gun.
What do you mean by the last part of your post?
BTW, the gun has an error; there are two extra gliders.
Another error! Doesn't approach correctly.

No, there's a fairly long history of "pure" Heisenburp reactions of this type -- see heisenburp-30.rle and heisenburp-46.rle in Golly's Signal-Circuitry folder. Both of those patterns now need updating -- the most recent versions would be:
Code: Select all

Here's some more background on Heisenburp devices that I
wrote up on comp.theory.cell-automata a while back:
dvgrn wrote:
Since about 1996 people have mostly been trying to build "pure"
Heisenburp devices, which superstitiously avoid affecting the glider in
any way, even temporarily; the two that come with Golly manage to
maintain a ring of OFF cells all around the glider at all times. The
preference for pure as opposed to "dirty" (!) devices is just a matter
of aesthetics (as I understand it) -- it's not like there's any
measurable difference between an untouched glider and a reconstructed
one with the same path and timing.

Dietrich Leithner built a smaller "dirty" version a couple of days
later, which works at p30 but bounces the input gliders around a lot.
It still takes some sneaky tricks to get down as low as p30 pure
Heisenburp detection. At least, I can't find anything recent that
improves on Jason Summers' "pseudo-Heisenburp" device; amazingly
enough, the entire device is on one side of the input glider path:
#C Pseudoperiod 30 pure Heisenburp device
#C Detects and duplicates a p30 stream of gliders without
#C influencing it, even temporarily. The device works by
#C interlacing two period-60 detectors.
#C Jason Summers, 3-Jul-1999

...
The two devices described above can be found in
Jason's collection in the "misc" section.
The stable pseudo-Heisenburp pattern you may be thinking of (heisenburp.py in Golly's Scripts/Python folder) was more of an experiment than anything else: if you're using only stable technology you're obviously going to have to destroy and rebuild the glider.
-- Though actually there's probably another way to produce a stable pseudo-Heisenburp effect, that doesn't require playing catch-up with a 2c/3 wire. All that's needed is a constructible stable fuse that can be triggered by a glider, and that spits out a glider at the other end at exactly the right spacetime location, along with one or more extra gliders along the way to trigger some fuse-rebuilding circuitry and produce the output glider(s).

I found a perfect reaction that kills a Herschel as an LWSS flys by totally untouched.

Very nice. I seem to recall there are a number of glider paths that can kill off a Herschel without affecting the glider, as well, but I think they're maybe not quite so clean as this.
However, Herschels are kind of overkill when you're dealing with any of the three natural orthogonal spaceships, which have lots of nice dying sparks at the sides and back that are easy to detect without affecting anything.
In particular, a single glider is enough to test for the presence of a back-spark from any *WSS. The glider will be suppressed cleanly if a spaceship passes in front of it, even though a one-cell rectangle of OFF cells is always maintained around the *WSS.
Here's an example I threw together this evening; it's not particularly optimized, just some standard p46 circuitry stolen from
Brice Due's metapixel pattern.
Code: Select all

But this a lousy implementation, with two glider guns that mostly cancel each other out -- kind of a logical double negative. There are cleverer Heisenburp reactions out there that don't need any guns at all, just oscillators with big sparks that are affected by passing spaceship sparks in just the right way.
Brice's metapixel pattern is worth a closer look, for example -- there are two different MWSS Heisenburp detection reactions in it, neither of which uses any guns. One produces a glider from a passing MWSS "out of the blue", and the other generates a perpendicular LWSS (!)

Now that I look again,
PM 2Ring's LWSS fanout is basically the same Heisenburp glider suppression trick, done at p30 (or rather p60) rather than p46. The test glider gets sparked to death in a slightly different way, or it goes on to suppress an LWSS stream directly instead of another glider stream -- but it all comes out the same in the end.
The big spark in a p46 oscillator is amazingly accessible, which I suppose is why it's possible to find so many direct reactions -- Brice Due calls them "Conway-space" reactions, as opposed to "engineered" or "engineering-space" reactions, evoking John Conway's original idea of studying the behavior of a CA rule long enough to find out what it can do naturally, so to speak. The search space for p46 technology is enormous, especially when you put two or more big sparks next to each other -- I'm still kind of amazed that there's a direct LWSS reflector
and a direct MWSS reflector:
Code: Select all

Yes, it is nice, but I just noticed that collisions occur for streams of period 120, 240 & 480, but 360 works ok.

How can it be more pure? The original MWSS stream is totally unaffected. This implementation is about as plain and simple as possible! It can be made more compact but not more "pure".

No, I was looking for these:
...there are two different MWSS Heisenburp detection reactions, neither of which uses any guns.
Sorry, it's just that I can't bother to search a pattern that big for very long. (I get impatient rather quickly)
Also if somebody finds them, could they show where in the metapixel they are?
EDIT: Typo.

The left-hand MWSS glider-out-of-the-blue reaction that Calcyman posted is used here and there around the perimeter of the metapixel, to generate the eight ON signals going out to neighbor metacells.
I described the other reaction wrong, the one that creates a perpendicular LWSS -- the flyby reaction uses an HWSS, not an MWSS. It's very easy to find, since there are lots of copies of it all around the edge of the central square, generating the LWSSes that fill the metapixel area when the cell is in an ON state.

OK, mainly looking for SS-glider p30-based heisenburps.
Just posted a device on triller's p30 thread with a MW to glider heisenburp.
Has a p60 LW to glider burp as well.

Never mind, found an arbitrary p60 SS (LWSS, MWSS, or HWSS) one:
