I accidentally found a long boat pull... almost:

x = 6, y = 7, rule = B3/S23

To mock the really futile attempt for the 2020 Olympic Games for Madrid, I made this pattern of 1105 generations before becoming stable, called Relaxing cup of "café con leche".

Code: Select all

x = 8, y = 11, rule = B3/S23
bo2bo$o2bo$o2bo$bo2bo2$o4bo$o4b3o$o4bobo$o4b3o$o4bo$b4o!
:)

Code: Select all

This is basically a methusaleh, but it's the first time I see one which makes a pattern at it's firs generation.
also, it is remarkable because it outputs many objects for a 1000G mathisaleh, but very few gliders in comparison of the famous R pentomino

Hello,

I'm not sure if this still life was not discovered yet ...
I called this thing "mirrored E"

Code: Select all

x = 5, y = 7, rule = B3/S23

That's a long table on long table.

EDIT: Unusual twinhat predecessor:

I was destroying a cordership when an heisenburp reaction appeared!

Code: Select all

x = 26, y = 44, rule = B3/S23
3o$bo$bo2bo$bo2bo$2bobo37$24bo$23b2o$23bobo!
it also stabilizes the switch engine into a blocky engine.
(by the way, there's an eater in the debris, but that's not important)

in the debris formed in the previous experiment, I noticed a smiley-like unstable object. Interested, I tracked it.

Code: Select all

x = 9, y = 6, rule = B3/S23
bo5bo$3o3b3o$o3bo3bo$2bo3bo$2bo3bo$3b3o!
It forms 2 PIs, which themselfes collide. In the remains, you can see 2 pairs of an induction coil I haven't ever seen.
I guess it would be the "coil mango on coil mango"
Here's the main reaction: 2 herschels collide and form the coils and 2 beehives

Code: Select all

x = 15, y = 3, rule = B3/S23
3o9b3o$bo11bo$b3o7b3o!

Has this ever been synthethised?

It's rare for sure, but I guess it's far less rare from starting patterns with 8-fold symmetry than from random soups. I was playing with patterns of "concentric squares" when the same arrangement of four beehive-at-beehives showed up (surviving!):

All the still-lifes up to 24 bits have been enumerated by the late '90s (although there are way too many of them to assign individual names to all of them). This one is 20.681 by my ordering (which is different than H. Koenig uses on pentadecathlon.com).

It can be synthesized from 16 gliders:

I used to have a web site (currently down) that listed all the still-lifes up to 17 bits, with syntheses for all up to 13 (among other things). I'm currently working on a major revamp of it that I'll post when it's ready. Unfortunately, with 112243 still-lifes of 20 bits (and 4051726 at 24 bits), there are way too many to just list in human-readable form. even the machine-readable archives of them occupy ridiculously large amounts of space. (20 bits is reasonable at 1.5 MB, but 24 bits takes 83MB). By the time one has such large numbers, there is seldom a good reason to need complete lists of such objects unless one specifically wants to deal with complete lists (for example, in my case, to be able to explicitly enumerate all of them).

On the other hand, looking at H. Koenig's archives on pentadecathlon.com, it looks like he actually has complete lists of all the still-lifes up to 21 bits, which is much more ambitious than complete than my site (which focuses more on syntheses, with larger object lists provided only when it is convenient to do so).

I like the henry Zorneck pattern, where the shuttles collide, create a rare still life, are destroyed, and become a natural fuse. Once the fuse has burn-out, everything disintegrates, while activating the other traffic light.

Interesting! This means it could be synthesized from perhaps 12 gliders (I assume the four converging things can be made from a forming honeyfarm plus maybe one additional glider?), plus a few extra for clean-up. This might even be better than doing it the hard way.
Herik Zorneck wrote:thank you! I am very glad that u enjoyed this, although I discovered completely randomly, trying to do something else (the " Gosper Machine") in which I have not had much success yet.
A large number of discoveries in Life (as well as elsewhere in mathematics and other areas) come as a result of serendipity - inadvertently finding one thing while looking for something completely different.
Lewis wrote:Strange 24-cell still object from soup:
What's interesting about this is that an unusual object with diagonal symmetry arises from a random asymmetrical soup. Given the complexity of the broth that makes it, I wonder if it might just be cheaper to synthesize the object using traditional brute-force techniques? (I'd estimate around 15 gliders or so).

While looking to find a solution for codeholic's question I found these two cases where a two-ship salvo hits a glider and produces a glider or two along with just a little bit of clean debris:

Code: Select all

x = 35, y = 22, rule = B3/S23
5bo28bo$5bobo24b2o$5b2o26b2o8$25b3o$3o22bo2bo$o2bo21bo$o24bo3bo$o24bo
3bo$bobo21bo$26bobo2b3o$6b3o22bo2bo$6bo2bo21bo$6bo24bo$6bo24bo$7bo24bo
bo!
The funny bit about the second one is that one of the output gliders is on the same path of the input. This allows for the possibility of the second being used for shuttling a glider back and forth as a gun.

it they don't really have much to do with each other, but the finished product is usually a multiple of the fuse, except in extremely rare cases. Usually when this happens, it is because the result of the fuse clumps together into groups of 2, each one effecting the other, and there is no other spark or piece of debris that would result in 2 p24's grouping with each other to form a p48.

1) A 2G salvo converts a block to an LWSS and a loaf.

2) 2G + 2b4 -----> LWSS

3) 2G + 2b4 -----> MWSS

The first reaction is probably known but the third was a surprise, just moving one block:

Code: Select all

x = 41, y = 179, rule = B3/S23

The third one ends up being the very old preblock+G -> MWSS. The other strange but long-known fact about that reaction is that you can move the trailing glider forward by one tick, and you get preblock+G->LWSS instead:

Code: Select all

x = 40, y = 38, rule = B3/S23

A block and an eater catalyze 180 degree glider kickback reaction with repeat time 76:

This gun can pull three different things:
