The LWSS collision producing 135-degree gliders is the reaction used in Double X and Metamorphosis II, discovered sometime well back in the previous millennium. The particular symmetric LWSS producer may not have been seen before.

It wouldn't be too surprising if search through objects of that size turned up a few more active objects that produce LWSSes that collide in the same way. This one does a good job of throwing the initial LWSSes a good distance from the line of symmetry.

I do not know if this is new. It is probably known, given that it is just one block. On the other hand, neither Century nor Century eater mentions it currently, and I could not quickly find it elsewhere. It might be new - sometimes simple-looking things get overlooked.

This century eater is known. It has been mentioned in this forum post by Tropylium in 2012, and even then this century eater could be already known at that time:
https://conwaylife.com/forums/viewtopic.php?p=6766#p6766

Amazingly, there is another century eater that also takes the form of a sole block, also mentioned in the post linked above:

The page "century eater" should be deleted. It implies that there's nothing smaller than 20 cells that can properly eat a century. This is plainly not true, even when you consider typical predecessors. How is that complicated one any different?

It's a bit different in that, if you run into a mention of "century eater" on the forums from back around 2013-14, it's very likely to mean that specific 20-cell object. So I guess the idea of putting "century eater" on the forums was to be able to look up that use of the term, and find what's being talked about.

I don't think the one-block century eaters can be substituted in successfully to the bistable switch, though I haven't double-checked that... obviously a century-to-glider converter plus a suppressing eater _could_ be subsituted into a bistable switch, but there's a reference to that in the bistable switch article.

So to me there doesn't seem any harm in leaving the century eater article as it is. Maybe just add a gallery of other century eaters to get rid of the implication that 20 cells is some kind of minimum?

That is indeed true. Neither of the transparent blocks works in the bistable switch. Both interact with the debris before it changes into a century.

there's a shuttle i found that rotates ninety degrees four times before self-destructing when i was messing with the fourth methuselah mentioned in this post.

Code: Select all

x = 7, y = 5, rule = B3/S23

however, removing the debris does not help the shuttle with continuing to turn, so the only way to make an oscillator out of this is to use a catalyst to turn it back into its original state, which seems almost impossible.

Code: Select all

x = 33, y = 67, rule = B3/S23

A block in this pattern participates in a transparent reaction TWICE! (found while trying to find a conduit for LWSS+domino-spark sequence)

EDIT: Well, the second reaction is pseudo-transparent, but it's close to transparent (Minimum 1 alive cell in block)
