I merely looked at the conduits and didn't run all of them, so I may have missed some examples where a larger catalyst containing a bookend, e.g. a BTS, performs multiple catalyses, some but not all of which can be performed by any inducted bookend, but because all of the catalyses that I found used the same basic reaction, that seems unlikely. As far as I can tell, based on your example and what I found in the Elementary Conduits Collection, if one attempts a snake-type catalysis, and the chaos doesn't go right away but instead pseudo-inducts the snake then starts crawling towards the side of the cell next to the snake that turned on, then replacing the snake with an inducted bookend might work. I suppose that it could also work after a fishhook-type catalysis, and I think that I may have even seen that once when I was trying to figure out how to turn a bookend into a house with gliders (which I probably shouldn't have been doing due to the principle of comparative advantage (i.e. I'm bad at glider syntheses but not at everything else, and that's not true of all Life enthusiasts, so it's more productive for me to search for conduits and a user who is good at making glider syntheses and bad at finding conduits to work on glider syntheses than the other way around) and the fact that someone else has probably already figured it out), but I can't remember for sure.
I am tentatively considering myself back.

Okay; I'm bad at certain types of glider syntheses. Once, when I was trying to stabilize a base, I tried using a loafer because there wasn't room for more gliders, and if I had used an XWSS, I wouldn't have been able to crash anything into it from behind. Needless to say, that did not work.
I am tentatively considering myself back.

That tells me that you could be on the verge of something new. Many "crazy" ideas have been fruitful before. Here are some examples:
1. The 4-in-a-row cordership:
I was just rubbing together puffer pairs, not knowing how unlikely a clean spaceship was. I got it on the first try.
2. The copperhead:
You'd be crazy to search P10 with a "methodical" search (trying to construct patterns instead of simply observing evolutionary results), and yet zdr found something. The copperhead.
3. 104P9:
I'd consider this to be another copperhead. It was found partially with JLS, but still with a crazy high period for a JLS search.
4a. The loafer:
Do you really think that you're going to find a new spaceship velocity with WLS? And velcrorex did.
4b. The lobster:
Like the loafer but diagonal.
5. The snark:
Yeah, since finding custom catalysts has always been easy. And now we have a tiny glider reflector.

I'm not trying to be condescending here or anything, I'm just trying to explain why these ideas can seem crazy at first. (Even JLS can find the copperhead!)

My point is, many patterns were found simply because the searches had been deemed as searches that weren't worth the effort, until they were worth the effort when a new exciting pattern was found.

That's a fair point, but I don't think that this particular example actually required a loafer. A Sir Robin synthesis might end up using one or more loafers or other spaceships not at the maximum speed for their direction, but I doubt that what I was trying to do had that level of difficulty.

Yes, but using a loafer just for the point of using a loafer is silly, and using a loafer because one, for the most part, only synthesizes things with actual spaceships and not collisions that result from spaceships (or is otherwise bad at glider syntheses) reflects more negatively than positively. Using a loafer because it's actually the cheapest option or because nothing that one tried before worked is a good usage of loafers, but there are not many cases where a synthesis is difficult enough for loafers to be a viable option that are actually worth trying.

It's possible that a loafer might be the most convenient way to edge-shoot a loaf into the middle of a busy synthesis where incoming gliders might be inconvenient.

Dave Buckingham tried all of them back in the '80s or so, but he only saved a few that were actually useful in syntheses, because such collisions would always require 3-4 gliders to synthesize anyway. I don't know if anyone has actually formally tabulated all of them. It seems like a fairly easy project to do, as there can't be that many of them.

No. That includes all 71 "legal" 2-glider collisions (i.e. those where the gliders could approach from long distances, and then interact). It doesn't include the small number of ways where gliders could interact in ways where they would have interacted earlier, had they approached from a distance.

You could manually generate those "illegal collision" by taking each one of those legal collisions (at the point just before they interact, e.g. as in the above stamp collection) and then advancing the gliders separately one or two generations without interaction.

This list also applies to other Life-like rules where the Life glider exists. In rules that include B2n (like LeapLife), there are 7 additional collisions.

There are two sets of 19 90-degree collisions. The gliders can be an even or odd number of rows apart, and one of them can be delayed 0-18 steps. With a delay of 20+, the two gliders can never interact. With 19, they can only interact with B2n (2 more collisions).

There are seven sets of 5 180-degree collisions. The gliders can be 0-6 lanes apart, and one of them can be delayed 0-4 steps. With 8+ lanes, the two gliders never interact. With 7 lanes, they can only interact with B2n (5 more collisions). The delay can actually be 0-7, but 5, 6, and 7 are equivalent to 3, 2, and 1 respectively if you swap the gliders. Similarly, with a 0 lane separation, there are only 3 unique collisions 0-2, because 3 and 4 are equivalent to 1 and 0 respectively. This gives 2*19+7*5-2 = 71 total collisions (or 2*20+8*5-2 = 78 with B2n).

There might be one or two mistakes, but I'm sure that it's mostly correct. It's a better representation of what actually is common in some ways. For example, traffic lights are more common than honey farms, the R-sequence has invalid two-glider syntheses, and a beehive has more invalid two-glider 90° syntheses than a pond. However, it's a worse representation in other ways, such as a (clean) pi-sequence, B-sequence, and S-sequence not having any invalid two-glider 90° syntheses and a beehive being as common as a block.
There's already a list of (invalid) 0° two-glider collisions, but no one has linked a collection of invalid 180° two-glider collisions, so I'll probably make one soon.

Also, I feel kind of uneasy of comparing this to actual glider syntheses, mainly because these don't work, but whatever.

To be honest, I'm questioning the usefulness of having such tabulations now.
