Why would you want to make the thousandth item on this thread? It is a block grandfather, yes, but it looks a tad useless.

Yeah, when I think of "explosive" I think of a large frame exploding at c or c/2 filling the plane with random static.
Some rules (such as 237/34/3) exhibit a "soup size effect" where chaos stabilizes quickly on an edge but smolders indefinitely in ash.
Highlife is unusual in that it has one explosive mechanism (which requires vacuum) and ash dies out.
Is it possible that on a large enough scale highlife patterns expand steadily in all directions at C/6 filling the plane with crisscrossed trails of stabilized ash and firing gliders and occasional *WSSs forward, ahead of the main wave?
Could collisions of those *WSSs with gliders create constellations which may even yield new explosions when hit by enough gliders?
Like the fate of sparse-life, the fate of highlife could be beyond what we can practically compute.

I am sure this has been known for at least 40 years.

Some people are impressed by superficial details, like "first post", "thousandth post", "millionth visitor to this web site", etc. Noting a detail like this in passing is fine, but posting something trivial, just to hit the magic number, is spurious.

Recently, I posted another rule called SimplifiedSeeds which is a bit hard to classify; It's really quite explosive, but it relies on a "mechanism": frequent replicators. I think this rule has some parallels with highlife as highlife isn't the typical kind of explosive you'd think of. Puffers in HighLife have been known to occur from interactions between bombers.

The Link to this rule is here:

viewtopic.php?f=11&t=803&start=25

Generally I'm not good with these kinds of things, but here is my hypothesis:

Any large, random initial starting configuration in HighLife will emit one or more replicator(s). The replicators will always form aperiodic "crystals"; this configuration has happened in other rules, (ex: large soups in 12578/368)
and my hypothesis is that any configuration involving a replicator and (a) still life(s) will eventually stabilize into a growing spaceship from replicators and a blinker.

On an unrelated note, here is a question about oscillators:

Has the existence of a period 2 phoenix, where no cells ever orthogonally come into contact, been proven impossible?

Please define "come into contact."
Do you mean polyomeno, king-wise or cluster?

Polyomino. Also, I am aware of several agars that exhibit this property; I am looking for proof of the existence (or non-existence) of a finite example.

Consider the top row:
If the pattern is not to waste away at light-speed, at some iterations it must either grow into the row above in which case it must have a three cells in a row in the top row (a polyemeno), or must remain in that top row.
Since all top row cells must die new cells must be born on that top row.
If cell a of the top row is to be born and no dominoes are to exist it must have 3 neighbors as shown:
b a c
0 d 0
Now cell d must have 4 neighbors.
b a c
0 d 0
e 0 f
Necessary to avoid polyemenos and b or c surviving:
0 b a c 0
0 0 d 0 0
0 e 0 f 0
In generation 1 a would be alive and so would be the cells below b and c but not b, c or d (or any cells in the line above a).
Therefore in generation 1 a would be alive and have two neighbors and thus survive to generation 2.
Therefore the pattern is not a phoenix.

Finding new still lifes is generally not considered interesting unless the still life does something useful. Programs like WinLifeSearch or JavaLifeSearch can quickly find many new still lifes with no obvious interesting properties. Most of the new useful still lifes are found with Bellman (Michael Simkin made a modified version for Windows, here, that doesn't rely on an external graphics library). Learning how to properly use Bellman can be tricky. To start with, one should look at this document by Mike Playle. There is also a Bellman topic on the scripts forum.

Unfortunately, the p64 pre-pulsar shuttle already needs a p64 to support it. There are also these two interesting pre-pulsar hasslers (p44 by Jason Summers and p55 by David Buckingham):

A glider will of course naturally translate 128 cells diagonally in 512 ticks.
I accidently found that this new H->G makes it possible to translate a glider 128 cells orthogonally in exactly 512 ticks, like this:

Code: Select all

6-glider synth of a 52-bitter which is a pseudo-still life.

I'm guessing that those "dented rows of bits" can be constructed with 3-4 gliders; at worst case would result in a 24G synth of a 76-bitter. There may also be a way to construct two at once with 4 gliders; that would make a 16G synth of a 76-bitter possible. By the way, would somebody terribly mind giving me the code for the synth of small lake? At http://codercontest.com/mniemiec/lifesrch.htm is outdated and says it's 10G.

This one has been known for some time.
gmc_nxtman wrote:I'm guessing that those "dented rows of bits" can be constructed with 3-4 gliders; at worst case would result in a 24G synth of a 76-bitter.
That's highly optimistic; I would probably be happy with around 8-10 each (e.g. a 3-4 glider spark on each side of a tub or beehive), although I have seen Extrementhusiast make some pretty amazingly-specific shock wave sparks from much less. This is an interesting still-life, but it's not going to be cheap.
gmc_nxtman wrote:There may also be a way to construct two at once with 4 gliders; that would make a 16G synth of a 76-bitter possible.
It's hard enough to create two still-lifes out of 4 gliders.
gmc_nxtman wrote:By the way, would somebody terribly mind giving me the code for the synth of small lake? At http://codercontest.com/mniemiec/lifesrch.htm is outdated and says it's 10G.
If you click on the Name: field in the lowest statistic box, it opens the RLE file for the synthesis. This will launch it directly into Golly if you have Golly associated with RLE files (and, unfortunately, if you don't, it will replace the search results instead of opening a separate window/tab). (Direct link: http://codercontest.com/mniemiec/lg/52-1.rle)

My pages were uploaded a few months ago; unfortunately, because of the great volume of information that has been discovered in the past three years, I am currently about 6-12 months behind as far as updating the most recent optimal syntheses. Nevertheless, most of the syntheses have not changed in decades. For example, if you look up small lake on the wiki, it shows the 10-glider and 11-glider synthesis file from my old site from the '90s; the new one is identical, and just adds two additional syntheses that don't improve anything.
gmc_nxtman wrote:88-bitter
Do you know how to generate the weird side sparks? They don't look familiar to me.
gmc_nxtman wrote:96-bitter from just sparks and a traffic light (probably 14-gliders at least, 26 at most)
Those sparks look highly artificial (i.e. hard to construct with gliders, and even if they are, they will likely be very expensive). 3 gliders per quadrant is very unlikely; even 6 is likely over-optimistic.
gmc_nxtman wrote:A related 88-bitter from 8 blocks + 4 Butterflies (28 gliders at most)
There are ways of making pairs of blocks at that spacing (and many others) from 3 gliders, which takes 12. Getting four butterflies together with such close proximity would be much more difficult, as they typically form growing and facing out (so you would need something like a big bang to spew out four of them). By the way, the butterflies alone make a pseudo-still-life consisting of four copies of two tied beehives.

Actually, the pseudo-still-life is four ships, not four boats, and can be made from 6 gliders. again, the sparks look highly artificial, but if you advance them two generations, they are fleet predecessors with some attached junk (which is likely more easily to synthesize).

Well, I'm not an expert in the "glider" part of glider syntheses and more of the step involving the base reaction from which they're formed.

Also, the "dented row of bits" forms this possibly-maybe-easier-to-synthesise shape at 5tick.

The key part of glider synthesis is usually finding a natural predecessor that makes something close to what you want, and can be slightly adjusted to do exactly what you want. This is why we have recently seen an large increase in cheaper glider syntheses of previously-expensive objects, based on random soup results from Catagolue, where such objects occur naturally. Rather than using heavy engineering to try to force Life cells to do one's bidding, one merely nudges existing primitives (e.g. gliders, simple still-lifes, simple methuselahs, etc.) to interact with each other, and let nature take its course.
gmc_nxtman wrote:Also, the "dented row of bits" forms this possibly-maybe-easier-to-synthesise shape at 5tick.
There are two reasons why this particular one won't work. First, it never reaches that stage here; it impacts the small lake earlier. Second, such a line would be the preferred way to create the blinker between boats, as it would otherwise be impossible to inject the blinker between two boats so close together, and it would be very difficult to bring two boats into an existing blinker, as the blinker would be in the other phase, and the boat-injectors would interact with it. (Non-standard sparks might be able to latch a partial boat into such a position, and use the blinker's points to finesse the final tip on the boat, but such a spark would not be cheap).

Something else that is much more promising is to replace the bent line of 9 with a solid line of 9, and suppress births behind it with one or two bits, in several different ways:

Code: Select all

x = 18, y = 17, rule = B3/S23
4b4ob4o$8bo2$bo6bo6bo$bo5bobo5bo$bo5bobo5bo$bo3b2o3b2o3bo$2o2bo7bo2b3o
$bo3b2o3b2o3bo$bo5bobo5bo$bo5bobo5bo$bo6bo6bo3$4b9o2$8bo!
This may actually be feasible. I'll have to look into finding a synthesis.

I seem to be making a lot of mistakes on this stuff... :|

I found several ways to make one quadrant; unfortunately, the rightmost glider from the southeast always interferes with the adjacent quadrant, so a better way to make a line of 9 is needed:

Don't worry about that. We all had to start somewhere, and we have all made quite a few mistakes in our time. Hopefully, we learn from our mistakes. Sadly, there are a few people out there who don't, but most people seem to progress. Some of the transitions from neophyte-to-expert I've just seen here in the last few years has been astounding.
gmc_nxtman wrote:Anyways here is another result, from another (actually quite old) search:
I think I've seen that predecessor before, after it becomes diagonally symmetrical. This is moot, because there has been a 4-glider synthesis for the bipond for years, and last year, Bob Shemyakin found a 3-glider synthesis (the first new 3-glider object synthesis found in around 2 decades). In fact, his synthesis uses the same symmetrical predecessor:

Code: Select all

x = 28, y = 14, rule = B3/S23

This is just a spark coil with a different rotor. You can get the corresponding dead spark coil still-life by moving the two rows 1 space closer together (and the corresponding skewed still-life by then moving one of them 2 spaces sideways). I don't recognize the spark, but the next generation of it looks familiar (although I can't remember what makes it). That's not important, as only half of it is used, making a forward-pointing J-shaped spark, and there are many ways to make that from 3 gliders. Thus, all three of these objects can be made from 16 gliders:

Code: Select all

x = 69, y = 137, rule = B3/S23

I was experimenting with covers when I came across an induction coil:

Code: Select all

x = 4, y = 8, rule = B3/S23
o$3o$3bo$2obo$2obo$3bo$3o$o!

It can, of course be stabilized to form a 50 bit still life:

o7bo$3o3b3o$3bobo$2obobob2o$2obobob2o$3bobo$3o3b3o$o7bo!
It can push two blocks by 2 two cells...

Code: Select all

x = 7, y = 8, rule = B3/S23
o$3o2b2o$3bob2o$2obo$2obo$3bob2o$3o2b2o$o!
Or act as a one time reflector...

Code: Select all

x = 9, y = 12, rule = B3/S23
7bo$6bo$6b3o2$o$3o$3bo$2obo2b2o$2obo2b2o$3bo$3o$o!
And it can be eaten by a block

Code: Select all

x = 8, y = 8, rule = B3/S23
o$3o$3bo$2obo2b2o$2obo2b2o$3bo$3o$o!
And four of them plus a block in the middle form a large 68 bit still life:

Code: Select all

x = 12, y = 12, rule = B3/S23
2b2ob2ob2o$3bob2obo$o2bo4bo2bo$3ob4ob3o$3bo4bo$2obob2obob2o$2obob2obob
2o$3bo4bo$3ob4ob3o$o2bo4bo2bo$3bob2obo$2b2ob2ob2o!
But I don't know it might be useless

True. :lol:

Anyways, here is a reaction between a boat and some junk to produce an 11-snake (which probably isn't helpful)

Code: Select all

x = 18, y = 24, rule = B3/S23

Probably more helpful is this reaction, easier to produce but harder to clean up:

Code: Select all

x = 37, y = 20, rule = B3/S23

I also have this very clean stabilization of a glider-producing switch engine, with no (actually some) debris, and just one backward glider:

Code: Select all

x = 17, y = 15, rule = Life

New induction coils aren't necessarily novel, unless they're smaller than previous ones. The smallest 4-cell induction coil is the block, and I could post the following induction coil as "new":

Code: Select all

x = 10, y = 5, rule = Life
2o3b2ob2o$obobobobo$obobo3bo$2o2bo3b2o$4b2o!
But it isn't really useful. No offense though. Just that still lifes/components of still lifes are less notable.
