I think there's a typo.

There were several. Fixed now I think (but since you didn't say what you saw, I don't know for sure).

I made a (hopefully) new Copperhead-to-g. Repeat time is 149.

Code: Select all

There are several p20 spaceships based off of puffer 2, so they can't all be notable.

Wow. The wiki doesn't mention that puffer 2 can be stabilized in any way other that the ecologist. It would be nice if they could give some examples. I might post that on the suggested lifewiki edits thread.

Here are three.

All three are listed here, along with two p20 spaceships that are not based off of puffer 2, but it's possible that there are more that don't have known glider syntheses yet.
I am tentatively considering myself back.

Copperhead-to-g again (smaller bounding box)(repeat time also 149):

Code: Select all

This of course is the smallest so this should be notable.

I made an attempt once at creating an article for the sidewinder but Hunting objected, saying that it was the name of a spaceship in OCA. Hunting has previously objected to names in OCA because they were in Life, though (and thought I made up the term bakery) so I respectfully invalidate his opinion.

With the shear variety of spaceships discovered in cellular autonoma, name overlaps will be inevitable. However, I believe that we should attempt to be thrifty with what words we reserve for spaceships in order to minimize this (which is one of the reasons why I think that the fat minnow should not have a separate name).

No, but given that there already is an article about a 10c/20o spaceship...

That is notable due to its rake potential, not due to the fact that no other 10c/20 spaceships have articles.

Code: Select all

That being said, there is nothing to prevent the puffer 2 article from mentioning that a glider placed behind the puffer cleans up all of its debris.

Half of this reaction with Pi:

Code: Select all

x = 30, y = 49
10boo7boo$10boo7boo$$obbo$4bo10boo$o3bo9bobbo$b4o10boo4$oo$bo9bo$bobo

Wait, right above is calcyman's stable glider pseudo-Heisenburp built before the era of Snark and syringe. Any rebuild?

I don't believe there's been a rebuild of that glider pseudo-Heisenburp, or an initial build of the LWSS pseudo-Heisenburp. If either of them exist, someone should tell me and I'll edit links into the first message in this thread.

An early result of the recent turner and splitter enumeration project was a four-object constellation that pseudo-Heisenburps a glider:

Code: Select all

x = 16, y = 13, rule = LifeHistory
4.2A$4.A$5.3A$7.A$13.2A$12.A2.A$2A2.2A6.A2.A$2A2.2A7.2A3$10.3A$10.A$
11.A!
There's very likely to be a three-object constellation that does this same trick, but it will take a much larger search to find it (which probably shouldn't be written in Python).

However, the four-object constellation should be somewhat easier and faster to rebuild with modern technology than the five objects in calcyman's pseudo-Heisenburp design. If not, other four-object options can probably be designed made up of a two-object splitter plus a two-object "0-degree turner" an arbitrary distance away, which should be really easy to rebuild.

(And of course we can definitely get a much faster repeat time these days than that impressive structure made out of Silver reflectors and long convoluted Herschel conduits.)

Would adding an extra still life for a glider output in the opposite direction be worth the increased number of restoration gliders required? Here is an example demonstrating that there is a usable spark produced on the other side. I'm sure that a more thorough source would return a clean method requiring only one additional object.

Code: Select all

x = 20, y = 18, rule = DoubleB3S23

I think that's a definite maybe. It partly depends on whether the repeat time of the pseudo-Heisenburp device is more important, or the bounding box size. More outputs in different directions will tend to make it easier to get the rebuild signals back to the key location quickly.

On the other hand, more outputs will also mean more cells where you can't put catalysts, which might mean you have to let signals travel farther away before duplicating them and bending them around and sending them back in, maybe with more expensive edge-shooters. So really until you complete a construction, it's hard to guess whether it will be either faster or smaller than the competition.

It's possible that the fastest-recovering pseudo-Heisenburp will be a staged-recovery mechanism:

glider hits one-time splitter#1, which produces exactly-timed output and one sideways glider;
sideways glider hits one-time splitter#2, which produces two or three signals immediately;
those two or three signals rebuild one-time splitter #1;
leftover outputs from the circuitry so far are used to rebuild one-time splitter #2.

It seems worth looking into the idea of a four-bait-object pseudo-Heisenburp, made up of two pairs of object with an adjustable distance between them. I'll have a look and see if anything like that is in the new OTT collection, especially with easy-to-rebuild objects.

EDIT: This might be about the best two-part constellation available:

Code: Select all

x = 43, y = 34, rule = LifeHistory
5.2C$4.C.C32.4B$5.C32.4B$4.B32.4B$4.2B30.4B$4.3B28.4B$2C2.4B26.4B$2C
3.4B24.4B$6.4B22.4B$7.4B20.4B$8.4B18.4B$9.4B16.4B$10.4B14.4B$11.4B12.
4B$26.4B$25.4B$17.B6.4B$15.B2CB5.4B$16.CBC2B.6B$17.C10B$19.10B$19.6B
2C3B$20.4BC2BCB$20.4BC.C2B$21.4BC3B$23.4B$22.4B$22.4B$23.4B$24.4B$25.
4B$6.B3C16.B3C$7.C2B17.C2B$8.C19.C!
The two pairs of still lifes can be moved as far apart as necessary to fit edge-shooter mechanisms in. I think some of these four objects can be placed with direct Herschel-to-X factories. Possibly the block could be replaced with some kind of catalyst, but maybe the odds are kind of low there.

Unfortunately there don't seem to be any two-object 0-degree turners that produce a glider on the right lane with the right timing. If there were, it would be worth looking for a third object that could be added to produce a sideways glider from its sparks. But all four of the turners in bucket0degCCcol16.rle have a non-zero lane offset.

(Yes, that file is misnamed, 'CC' should be 'CP', I still need to rewrite the categorizer script for 0-degree and 180-degree turners to include subcategories by output lane.) Here's one that's only off by two lanes:

Code: Select all

x = 28, y = 44, rule = LifeHistory
3D$D$.D9$15.2C$15.2C4$3D$D$.D12.2C$14.C.C$16.C$16.2C4$25.3A$25.A$26.A
14$25.3A$25.A$26.A!
Anyway, it seems like it should be possible to build something significantly smaller than the old glider Heisenburp.

Yes, but if we only have an output glider in one direction, we will need to split the glider on one side and send it to the other side, so we will need to make the gliders staying on that wait longer in order to keep the timing correct, which means that we will need to build more conduits for them.

Sure, there's no end to the "yes, but"s. For some bait objects, it turns out you only need signals on one side -- like the loaf in a highway robber.

You might be making the assumption that signals on one side have to be synchronized with signals from the other side, to make a collision. But if you can find factories that build each piece separately, then you don't necessarily need any synchronization, and circuits can be connected up as tight as you can make them.

A really lucky find would be a direct signal-to-X factory, where X is exactly the one-time constellation that needs to be rebuilt. That's a bit too unlikely to hope for, but maybe we can find a two-signals-to-X or three-signals-to-X, where maybe one or two of the signals just clean up some extra junk that is also created, or convert one object to another, move a block, etc.

Replacing some of the bait objects with catalysts might also be a possibility, though catalysts like that are a lot trickier to hunt for.

And again, a completely different design might be needed to optimize bounding box from what's needed to optimize repeat time, though there should be at least some correlation between the two.

Weekender hauling doo-dah-to-G, with a fair repeat time (Which, unfortunately, produces a Herschel in a very inconvenient place):

Code: Select all

x = 49, y = 55, rule = B3/S23

Here is a way to convert it to an E-sequence based off of that.

Code: Select all

x = 35, y = 55, rule = LifeHistory

A14.A$10.2A10.2A!

Edit: Here are a couple of ways to turn a loafer into a pi-sequence.

Code: Select all

x = 15, y = 14, rule = B3/S23

I am tentatively considering myself back.
