Finally found a name: long bun

Code: Select all

Sarp has named these Sandwich and Toast on the Discord but has not decided which is which yet. The names refer to the sequences and constellations, not specifically generation 0. Both are common but not large enough to get onto this page.

I propose 64P2H1V0 to be named Stingray. I just get this immense stingray vibe watching it glide around the place.

However, there are similar spaceships, such as xq2_1fc0s04g0tje28agga82ejt0g40s0cf1zx112731ya137211, and these presumably also resemble stingrays. Perhaps each stingray-resembling spaceship should be named after a different species of stingray.
I am tentatively considering myself back.

While I like the idea of naming stingray-y spaceships after ray species, I do think that that one in particular is notable for being the smallest period-2 spaceship known.

They won't work because they aren't descriptive enough, so they could refer to other constellations. Here is an example of something else that "two symmetric loaves" could refer to.

Code: Select all

x = 7, y = 7, rule = B3/S23

Also, because they are not specific, those feel like general descriptions, not actual names, to me.

This phase of this p4 reminds me of a wasp: the top looks like it has antennae, and the bottom blinker could be interpreted as a stinger. How about "hornet" for this one?

Code: Select all

x = 9, y = 11, rule = B3/S23
4bo$4bo$4bo$2o5b2o$2bo3bo$3b3o$2ob3ob2o$bob3obo$4bo$4bo$4bo!
And this p3 makes me think of two of those cartoon robot hands that have two "fingers", which look like the end of a spanner. (Like this: --c ) There are cis and trans versions of this - how about "robot shrug" for the former and "robot handshake" for the latter?

Code: Select all

x = 13, y = 11, rule = B3/S23
2b3o3b3o2$o4bobo4bo$o4bobo4bo$o4bobo4bo$2b3o3b3o$4bo3bo2$3b2o3b2o$3bo

The smaller-bounding-box phase of 15P2.1 always reminded me of a crying emote of sorts - I've colored in each part for clarity (eyes and nose in orange, tear streams in cyan).

Code: Select all

x = 7, y = 5, rule = LifeSuper
3O.3O2$.S.O.S$S5.S$2S3.2S!
Would "grief" be a fitting name for this? I've used it myself but have tried hard to avoid contaminating the wiki with any unofficial names I come up with that aren't approved by the community beforehand.

Other than because it exists, why does this object need a name?

Maybe what's needed is for someone to setup a system of selling NFTs with the "naming rights" to Life objects. That way a list of the "official" names for Life objects could look like a list North American sports venues.There are an infinite number of objects, so think of the profits to be made! And they could be "renamed" every few years when someone buys the NFT.

(Having long ago been involved with getting actual long-standing geographic names used in a particular US National Park made official by the US Board of Geographic Names, I learned that naming even trivial locations is political and people's egos quickly become involved.)

How about we call the recently discovered 20-cell quadratic growth "Double trouble"? I think it's fitting because the pattern is a breeder consisting of two interacting switch engines, and its population is double that of the smallest infinite growth pattern.

27P4H1V1 (I hope that’s what it’s called) needs a name and a wiki page, or at least deserves a part of the crab page.
But definitely needs a name.

I would personally call it Crayfish, Mantis shrimp, Krill, really any other crustacean, or Barc.
How about "Strolling Gliders" ?

I need a name for this engine because there are cases where it seems like puffers using this engine should be put into a separate file, in which case I would need a name like period-name.rle for said puffers.

The following are mvr's names, not mine.

Fizzle

Code: Select all

Seven blinkers

Code: Select all

x = 5, y = 4, rule = B3/S23

ThreeSeven (named as such because of the 3c/7 wave)

Code: Select all

x = 5, y = 4, rule = B3/S23

Bi-blocker (I call it an offset honey farm myself, and the object hassled in Karel's p177 "offset LOM")

Code: Select all

x = 5, y = 3, rule = B3/S23
obo$2ob2o$2bo!
Flare

Code: Select all

x = 4, y = 4, rule = B3/S23

Flop

Code: Select all

b3o$o2bo$o2bo$obo!
Sputter

Code: Select all

x = 4, y = 4, rule = B3/S23
2b2o$bo$3o$bo!
I believe these two were named by Sarp, but without specifying which was which. mvr chose an order, so they're now determined.
Toast on left, sandwich on right.

I personally think that 64P6 should have a name because it’s used so often. I think the name “Shield Volcano” would be a good fit.

We have 2 eaters, 4 eaters, so we need 8 eaters. I think maybe 74P34 could be called 8 eaters. Naming things after elements seems boring, and M34 is just an open cluster so let's not do that(Does M34 even have a name?).

Unfortunately, I would oppose this. It's not unique.

12bo9bo$9b3o11b3o$9bo15bo!
I was also initially going to say that eight eaters would be just eight eaters, but I don't think this is a valid argument because I support "fourteen blocks" for the new p199.

34-34? Because its synthesis uses 34 gliders and it is p34.

I think the new syringe should have a name, maybe something to do with the loaf and beehive push catalyst?
