Can this be finished?
3G, also 5G for a better-clearance version:

Code: Select all

x = 62, y = 24, rule = B3/S23

o2$5bo$4b2o$4bobo$37bo$37b2o20b2o$36bobo20bobo$59bo!
So surprising that the boat version costs less than the block one.

Not necessarily. Boats and blocks usually form using similar evolution sequences. There are many mechanisms were adding an inducting boat is just as cheap as adding an inducting block, and some (like the boat-bit) where it's actually cheaper.

Well, I have almost no experience on this so, it makes sense that I think it is surprising

A nice trick to try to solve these sorts of problems yourself is to look at the Catagolue page for similar (probably smaller) still-lifes, and hopefully find some useful components from the synthesis there. For example, in this case I looked at the synthesis on Catagolue for xs21_0gjpabo8goz32:

Code: Select all

#C [[ GRID MAXGRIDSIZE 14 THEME Catagolue ]]
#CSYNTH xs21_0gjpabo8goz32 costs 33 gliders (true).
#CLL state-numbering golly
x = 218, y = 72, rule = B3/S23

The final component there is the conversion we are trying to perform. We can try and copy paste it for our slightly different still-life, but it doesn't work because the block sticks out too much. Fortunately, it's not too hard to modify the component so that it doesn't interact with the block:

For the first conversion to be possible, the snake at right, plus an extra bit, must be added without causing the cell marked in salmon to die from overpopulation. This, in turn, requires three cells, marked in purple, to be off throughout the entire conversion. If we just needed to insert a snake, that wouldn't be so hard, but we also need to turn that lone bit on:

Code: Select all

x = 22, y = 11, rule = LifeSuper
15.2K$16.K$15.K$15.2K$3H2.M12.KM$.OM.M.M8.2M.M.M$M.M.M2.M6.M.M.M2.M$M
3.3M7.M3.3M$.3M11.3M$4.M13.M$3.2M12.2M!
For the second conversion to be possible, the cell marked in salmon must be turned off, which can't be done without disrupting the surrounding cells:

Code: Select all

x = 21, y = 11, rule = LifeSuper
.2M11.2M$2.M12.M$.M12.M$.2M11.2M$4.2M11.2M$.2M.M.M7.2M.2M$M.M.O2.M5.M
.M$M3.3M6.M3.4M$.3M10.3M3.M$4.M12.M$3.2M11.2M!
Thus, these two conversions are extremely difficult, if not impossible, to complete.

Does anyone know of a edgy synthesis for this pair of eater-1s where the gliders come from the direction of the red arrow? I've made a (perhaps foolhardy) attempt to synthesize the p23 honey farm hassler and I think it either needs this, or a single eater inserter with an even narrower gap to thread. I stumbled across the constellation in a 1x256 soup on catagolue but it's formation wasn't edgy.

We could certainly ask slsparse whether it knows how to push those two eaters into place with a slow salvo. If it returns something, the final step might give some clues.

However, it looks like you'll need something that arrives very quickly and builds the eaters, after a signal comes in from somewhere to activate the central honeyfarm. What's the plan for that part? It would be best if it took as long as possible to produce the honeyfarm predecessor, while remaining in that small confined pocket.

EDIT: slsparse seems to go into a very short loop when confronted with

Code: Select all

x = 91, y = 74, rule = B3/S23

so I don't think any help will be coming from that direction.

I got to an activation step that looks like this, and where I can place a sacrificial block in the space of the final eater to keep the reaction going another cycle but couldn't find a way to get an eater inserted (or a way to do a pair of them). It also means I can't actually quite get to that final step because I can't get all 3 eaters in with the eater-bridge-snakes in place.

Yeah, I'm not turning up anything immediately, but I'm not really an expert and can't prove that the job is impossible either. Just for anyone else looking at this, the old pond+2G reaction comes from the right direction, and it would work fine if the other eater had just one more lane of clearance:

There seems to be a different 3G converter already known, but this new one has much better clearance -- new recipe on the right below:

Code: Select all

35.C$34.2BC$34.3CB$35.4B$36.3B.C$36.3BC2B$35.4B3C$9.2B23.7B$7.5B23.5B

A$11.3A27.3A$11.A29.A!

Does anyone happen to have an old problem for which this is a convenient solution?

EDIT: Oops, no, the current synth for xs23_35icz64kl552zw11 shows that this "new" 3G conversion is also already known.

Ooh, I always love watching these Big-Frozen-Blob-Applicator converters!

This one can be improved quite a lot. I was going to just patch up the kickback reaction, since the pi and blinker can be created both at once with 2G each... but then I figured it was worth looking later in the sequence and seeing if all that faraway junk was really necessary.

The old octohash database didn't know anything about the key 2b3o$bo$o3bo$2obo2$3bob2o$2bo3bo$5bo$2b3o! active reaction, but octo3obj was able to find some very useful options:

Code: Select all

x = 139, y = 53, rule = B3/S23

It works on the beehive-looking side of (the correct orientation of) loaf-like things, too, of course. I've submitted a version of the wormblob getting applied to a half-bakery, on the grounds that if anyone ever needs to apply one of these wormblobs onto something, that would be a reasonable place to look in Catagolue for it:

Based on a soup for xs33_xcimge1egoz0ggcia6z3421, component that adds an 18-bit attachment to a beehive/loaf-like surface. Previous cheapest synths that I see on catagolue went the other way appending the bun/loaf-type object.

Code: Select all

x = 148, y = 362, rule = B3/S23

This reduces xs33_xcimge1egoz0ggcia6z3421 (23G to 11G), xs30_wcimge1egozwcia6z311 (15G to 12G, though technically no previous synth but can be pulled out from the xs33's old best synth), xs26_69acz69d1ege13 (12G to 10G).

Looks good except for the cleanup -- there's no way that two unwanted blocks that show up right next to each other, way out at the edge like that, should have to get cleaned up by two separate gliders.

Code: Select all

#C Seeds of Destruction solution, <5 seconds
x = 54, y = 70, rule = LifeHistory
7.A.A$8.2A$8.A20$30.A$28.A.A$29.2A7$45.2A$45.A.A$46.A10$39.
2A$39.2A$52.A$51.2A$51.A.A5$44.2A$43.A2.A$44.A.A$45.A12$3A$
2.A$.A!
There are also some possible later target points for the key reaction, which I think end up costing the same amount:

Code: Select all

x = 120, y = 54, rule = B3/S23
103bo$104bo$102b3o8$109b2o$109b2o2$105b2o$25bo79b2o$26b2o$25b2o2$40bo$
41bo$39b3o3$40b2o3b3o$41b2o2bo$40bo5bo5$111bo$110bobob2o$110bobobobo$
108bobobo3bo$108b2o3b3o2$44b2o67b3o$28b2o13bo2bo66bo2bo$29b2o13bobo67b
obo$28bo16bob2o66bob2o$46bo2bo66bo2bo$47bobo67bobo$48bo69bo9$2o$b2o$o!
There's one lane more clearance on the right side of the base object, for the rare cases where that might make a difference. Obviously it only costs one more glider to avoid having any gliders coming in from the southeast at all. Or that glider could be moved another seven lanes farther away with this option:

Code: Select all

x = 114, y = 47, rule = B3/S23
