The first of many possibilities:

Is this known? (found by Alex Greason)

Code: Select all

Looks like a variation on what is already known.

Code: Select all

x=16, y=16

The first step, placing the Block, is the same, but the trigger using a Pond appears to be new. The key is placing the Tub next to the Block in either case.

6G eater to loop:

Code: Select all

x = 14, y = 19, rule = B3/S23

Might be reducible to 5G.

1. The synthesis looks fine, Catagolue doesn't always do well with closely-spaced XWSSs, though.

2. Nice! That's a slightly different SL though. (I got 90% of the way to that synthesis, but of all the things I ended up overthinking the 2G pi inserter and assuming it was the wrong pi relative.) It does obsolete mine, I think -- I'm pretty sure the conversion can be done in 2G.

3. Even better!

As a whole, that sequence turns objects like the one on the left into objects like the one on the right:

Code: Select all

x = 37, y = 9, rule = B3/S23

This is relevant because this line-of-four-with-handle motif appeared frequently in efforts to synthesize still lifes, and we've always had to work around it. Now there's actually a general component to create the motif. Higher-clearance versions would be helpful, so as to apply to more awkwardly-shaped still life bases.

EDIT: Component to make a surprisingly tough claw-and-tail motif:

Code: Select all

x = 23, y = 38, rule = B3/S23

3G snorkel loop component from the Glider_stdin censuses:

Code: Select all

x = 10, y = 14, rule = B3/S23
2bo$bo$b3o$8b2o$9bo$6b3o$6bo$obo$b2o$bo2$2o$b2o$o!
This next reaction* adds a bun to a forming loaf with just 2G. Known?

Code: Select all

x = 15, y = 16, rule = B3/S23
12bo$10b2o$obo8b2o$b2o$bo6$7bobo$7b2o$8bo$3b2o7bobo$2bobo7b2o$4bo8bo!
*what should we call reactions like this? "subcomponents", perhaps, since they require other reactions to happen at the same time?

"what should we call reactions like this? "

Dependent component?

Oh yeah, I should give credit to Kazyan for coining the term "subcomponent" on Discord last month. I just mentioned it here because I don't think it has been used on the forums in this context:
Kazyan wrote: I've been kicking around an idea for generating new components from "subcomponents", but until I actually do that (and I'm unlikely to, because programming), it's unimplementable vaporware.

...

Code: Select all

x = 26, y = 10, rule = LifeHistory
4.2A18.2A$.A2.A19.A$A.A.A8.D7.CA.A$A.A.2A8.D7.A.2A$.2A2.A4.6D4.C.A2.A
$3.A10.D5.2C.A$3.2A8.D8.D2A$23.C$24.C$23.2C!
The above is another example of what I'm talking about with the 'subcomponent' thing. There is a component to turn the bun there into a bookend, and a component to add the snake motif at the bottom, but I'm 80% sure that tansfer.py has no idea that you can use those two specific components in tandem like this. (If you try to use them individually on this object, it doesn't work because the red cell turns on. If you use them both at the same time, it jumps from 2 neighbors to 4.)

Dependent component?
I could've sworn I've heard "dependent component" before as well, but the only result I can find on either the forums or the Discord server was this post by Scorbie from 2015, which might(?) actually be a misspeaking of "dependent conduit" and definitely does not seem to have anything to do with glider synthesis.

"Subcomponent" doesn't quite capture the idea that there is a dependency. Unless you add a qualifier, then it could either be "dependent" or "independent" ("standalone"?). In this case, that it requires a specific other component to work properly.

A way to make the claws of awkward cis-shillelaghs:

A way to add an eater motif to a snake-end when it's partially blocked:

Code: Select all

x = 25, y = 29, rule = B3/S23
7bobo$8b2o$8bo3$11bobo$12b2o$12bo6bo$19bobo$19b2o4$2bo$obo19bo$b2o18bo

3o$12bo$11bo!
The boilerplate method is to add a beehive-with-tail motif via something that looks like this, but the steric hindrance on the right stops that mechanism:

Code: Select all

x = 31, y = 8, rule = B3/S23
bobobo15b2o$o2bobo2bo11bo2bo4bo$bobo3bobo11b2obo2bobo$7bo2bo13bo2bo2bo

I found these by reversing the evolution through JLS, but I can't get any farther from here. Can someone else help?
