Object Usage Thread

A thread for talking about possible usages of the objects. You can post here if you find an use for something,whether the first possible or not.
This is not useless,as someone may think.
Feel free to post!
Have a good day!

An example usage of the eater-2 variant (doesn't work with regular eater-2):

Code: Select all

x = 14, y = 8, rule = B3/S23

I don't see the point of this thread, and you didn't provide any useful information here. The usage of an object would be discussed the place it is discovered, and otherwise it's pretty much useless.

TL;DR: This thread should go to the sandbox, like the Find a use for the Mango thread.

This thread is about patterns,so it belongs here.

You didn't even understand how the forum works. The sandbox is a dump for non-serious discussions to avoid cluttering up the four main forums.

This is the serious discusion. I just want to make a thread that will be useful.

Just curious, how do you set up the poll? I have not seen this function available for common users. Maybe it is limited to moderators?
EDIT: no, it's just that it works only in Website Discussion, Bugs & Errors and Patterns.

What's the result of the poll? When I voted, it was 1 "useful" and 3 "useless". Apparently no one thinks this thread is useful except you.

I think it might be useful, for those who don't know how to use catalysts (like me).

Then we should have a "Catalyst Discussion Thread" I think.

What IS Useful

People who are new to CGol have no idea what all the objects ARE and much less about their use;

to have a thread that consolidates all various and disparate items scattered throughout the Forum

is extremely useful to someone new, and even to someone like me, who does not know everything:

User Entity Valkyrie 2 posted a simple E-to-H converter in an OCA thread (original post). His rule was probably intended to be Pedestrian Life (B38/S23), but it works in standard Life as well.

Code: Select all

x = 12, y = 31, rule = B3/S23
10b2o$10bo$8bobo$8b2o7$o$obo$3o$bo4$3b2o$3b2o10$b3o$3bo$3b2o!
This same pattern, or something very similar, is floating around somewhere in the middle pages of the Hunting of the New Herschel Conduits thread, if I remember right — out in the wilderness where neither Google or the forum search utility can find it with only the single letter E as a clue to its whereabouts. Regardless, there's not currently an X-to-E that works with it (there's one H-to-E I know of, which generates the E from the wrong direction for this, but nothing else as far as I'm aware), so it's moot for now.

EDIT: Surprisingly, I'm not finding it there at the moment, or in the Elementary Conduits thread. I distinctly remember having seen it somewhere on the forums at least twice, though.
So having a redundant thread wouldn't hurt, WOULD keep things from falling thru the cracks, AND would save a lot of hair from being pulled out !

A GoTo when you have no clue where to goto - and so no need to ask for help - which may or may NOT be Useful...

Cheers !

I have to disagree with this.

1. Redundant threads DOES hurt. BokaBB created several redundant threads, which makes it hard to find actual stuff. And those threads only contains random ideas, instead of actual progress.

2. The creation of a new thread, especially in the Patterns forum, is usually discussed a lot to prevent cluttering. (The early threads are not counterexamples - at that time the forum is only freshly started, and so does its users. That is like, posting novel p2s in the LeapLife thread is appreciated for now, but you'll probably be blamed for doing that after a year of development.)

3. Objects are invented for a purpose. There's no such thing called "I found a potentially useful SL, let's find a place where it can be useful!"

4. The forum is not supposed to be a storage of miscallenous stuff. Summaries, for example, is supposed to be published elsewhere, like a personal blog.

Sorry for double post but copying is painful on the phone and you can no longer quote posts on the Post Review when editing.

You keep claiming that you are not new but the way we define "new" is: do not understand how the forum works and you obviously fits.

TL;DR of the entire thread:
One interesting eater 2 variant catalysis and a lot of Sandbox-quality discussion.

Why is this in the Patterns sub-forum? Most objects are noted because they have usage in the first place, like 31.4 was only brought up to "notable" status because it was used in the Snark. The hat+table eater 2 variant was only brought up to "slightly notable" status because it was a fairly cheap and straightforward eater 2 variant, as seen in syntheses of Buckingham's p13. If I were to create an eater 2 variant right now

Code: Select all

#C [[ X 10 Y -3 ZOOM 50.0 ]]
x = 27, y = 17, rule = B3/S23
23bo$23b3o$5bo20bo$4bobo10b2o4b4o$4bobo10bo2bobo$3b2ob2o11b2ob3o$25bo
$3b2ob2o11b2ob3o$3b2obo3b2o7b2obo$8bo2bo$3o4b3o$2bo3bo$bo4b2o2$3b3o$5b
o$4bo!
(fun fact: i was creating a variant but i realised it was at least slightly notable because it was, iirc, the smallest weld of an eater 2 and eater 1 specifically for that distance, sorry, it can be found to the left, that's why i have script commands)
(feel free to disprove me though)
there is pretty much no way i would ever remember it in one hour.
