Some observations I've made regarding the p2s:

- 2.4.1 is stated as having ".cxc" symmetry, but if I'm interpreting things right, "n.c" would be the more correct classification. This was also the case in DRH-oscillators.
- 2.4.5 is stated as being in the collection to serve as an example of -e+e symmetry, despite it not actually serving as such an example. This is odd, as this description was just fine (completely accurate) in the original DRH-oscillators.

I'm not sure if this is possible, but could the script also calculate the kinetic symmetry of an input RLE, and append this data next to its entry like the discoverer and date are? Since symmetry is something intrinsic to every periodic pattern, I think every pattern in the stamp collection should have it calculated and assigned, rather than only a small handful thereof.
I haven't modified anything from DRH regarding symmetry types. For the second one, I must have done some kind of stator reduction.

How easily can this project be repurposed to make a queryable oscillator database? For example, if I ask the script for all oscillators discovered by David Buckingham before July 1996 it would give me a stamp collection of all matching patterns.

I think such a database should at least include the following:
  • The pattern itself (RLE or possibly some more compressed format)
  • Discoverer
  • Discovery date (including earliest possible and latest possible dates when the exact date is unknown)
  • dr rotor descriptor
  • Various pattern statistics like period and minimum population
  • Tags for special patterns (e.g., "spaker", "billiard table", "pipsquirter")
Does anyone have any thoughts on this?

Edit: this database could also come with a Golly script to search a selected oscillator to get discovery information and statistics.

The search script is reasonably easy. I might even volunteer to write it as a cool Lua overlay script with checkboxes and editable text boxes and things, if the back-end database gets filled in with all the necessary tags and information.

The format of the database also isn't a problem. It's currently just a flat text file, because that seemed like a really nice simple easy-to-update way of doing things, and on balance it seemed like something more complicated like a SQLite database would just reduce the number of people who could confidently make updates to it without breaking anything. But if we want to be serious about making a queryable oscillator database, it's totally trivial to convert oscillators.txt into a database format like that.

The content of the database is the big problem. Long experience shows that it's very easy to end up with a not-quite-useful database that's perennially out of date. A good way to show that that's not what's going to happen this time, would be for someone to go ahead and collect all the necessary data for a queryable database, for every oscillator currently in the collection. This collected data could be in any convenient form -- for example, it doesn't have to be a modified copy of the oscillators.txt file with the new data in special labeled comment lines like #C DB:TAG=sparker (though it could be, I wouldn't mind!).

If the collected data looks more like a standard database, then we need a reliable key field -- which could be anything from an apgcode to an octo3 hash or a Golly hash of the the RLE in oscillators.txt. Maybe an extended apgcode would be best, since it would still work if someone changes the phase of the oscillator in the stamp collection.

The stamp-collection repository is currently serving its original purpose very nicely, of providing an easy way to create labeled oscillator stamp collections for Golly without having to spend days re-inventing multiple wheels with every new update. So until all the hypothetical additional queryable data is actually collected, I'll be a little skeptical about making big speculative changes to the current project -- would rather not break what we have right now.

It would probably be best to maintain a proto-database that is easy for a user to update. The queryable database could then be built by a script that adds all of the calculated pattern statistics. These are the fields I think would need to be included in this proto-database:
  • name
  • discoverer(s)
  • earliest possible discovery date
  • latest possible discovery date
  • tags
  • related patterns
  • comments
  • some encoding of the pattern in question

I think a bit more brainstorming needs to be done before data collection begins. We wouldn't want to collect insufficient data for each object and later realize we need to go back through the database and add more data to every entry, nor would we want to spend time adding oscillators that we later decide don't belong in the database.

One part of the database that I want in some form but am not sure how best to include is a related patterns field. So for example if a pattern has an interesting variant those two patterns can somehow be connected in the database.

I tried to make a simple mock-up using the p18 oscillator collection from jslife. My oscillators.txt file lookes like this:

When I tried to build the stamp collection using the script (with some added still lifes in the database to avoid errors) I ended up with the following pattern:

For some reason the comments are all out of order, and obviously there's no way yet to group related patterns, but it generally looks like I would want it to.

That's very odd. I'd better get a new version of the oscillator stamp collection checked in to Golly this weekend, so I'll do some experimenting and keep an eye on this -- see if I can figure out why it happened in this case.

In the p24 section of the stamp collection, there are two p24s that are essentially duplicates. They are in different phases, but they have identical apgcodes. The offending oscillators are marked white in LifeHistory, and one of them has to be removed.

Code: Select all

x = 169, y = 281, rule = LifeHistory

One has just been removed from my .txt file at your request. I don't update the OP live.

I'm posting here to bump this, but I want to point out that not every oscillator is making it in anymore, especially periods 16, 24, 30, 32, 36, and 48, which already have very long sections. Look at how spaced out the 46 section is; that's because 48 is huge and won't fit in the column with 46.

b3s23osc.py has been updated for its initial text only (no actual code), so that it lists periods 34 and 38 as found instead of missing and to put Carson Cheng, Mitchell Riley, and Luke Kiernan in the abbreviated names list, plus several 2021 → 2022.

I'm interested in whipping up a server (a la catagolue) for maintaining the collection up-to-date,
but I don't have enough (coding proficiency) * (time) to materialize it right now.
I'll put this on my TODO queue.

I've updated it again at https://github.com/dvgrn/b3s23osc. I've doubled COL_HEIGHT from 650 to 1300.

However, I can't edit the OP.

In addition, the help file in Golly seems to have a character limit, which means it won't show descriptions past period 54.

The 6-digit byte limit is a limitation of the phpBB software, I believe -- don't think there's an easy way to bump it up any further.

Messages with 100,000+ bytes can take awkwardly long to load, anyway, so we should probably just come up with another presentation method eventually.

For now I've edited the labels to take fewer bytes, and have updated the original post. Seems like we can probably stave off the problem for quite a long time, by splitting off the initial comments into a separate post, and including just the RLE and the LifeViewer labels in the current original post.
