Can anyone give an example of sliding blocks memory (simplest and smallest one)?

and how it can be used to make a counter?

Thanks again )

You can pull a block in with two gliders like this:

Code: Select all

x = 29, y = 24, rule = B3/S23
18b2o$18b2o4$8bo$8b2o$7bobo6$6b3o$8bo$7bo!
You can push a block out with three gliders like this:

Code: Select all

x = 29, y = 24, rule = B3/S23
$17b2o$17b2o3$8bo$8b2o$7bobo5$b3o$3bo2b3o$2bo5bo$7bo!

Early this year Calcyman put together a binary-counter pattern using these reactions attached to an implementation of a finite-state machine:

http://calcyman.awardspace.co.uk/life-m ... counter.mc

You can copy and paste the counter.mc text directly into Golly, but you may have to set the rule to B3/S23 since the file doesn't specify it.

The minimal circuitry to run a binary counter would be much smaller than this, of course -- depends on whether you want the counter to be triggerable from an external signal, or if it can just increment itself continuously.
