Re: How do you know that a pattern is a Garden of Eden ?
The easiest way to check if a pattern is an orphan is probably to use JLS to prove that it has no predecessors.
- Set the period to 2 and place (you can use copy and paste) your suspected orphan in the center of the JLS search area of gen. 1 (note: the generations are labeled "gen. 0" and "gen. 1") surrounded by unchecked cells (to get unchecked cells, highlight an area and press 'u').
- In gen. 0, set all cells unchecked except for the cells inside a 1-cell boundary around the location of your suspected orphan.
- Click "Search->Options" and go to the "sorting" tab. Set the starting column and row to be the center of your suspected orphan and select the "circle" sort order. Click "Ok".
- Click "Search->Start" and wait for the search to either complete with no solutions (in which case you have an orphan), or for the search to find a predecessor.
