Thread for your unsure discoveries

Well, I noticed that many people find things that they don't know about, whether its new, or what, so I think those should go here.

Hello, I am quite new to this. I've been playing around with this for a while (I know, that's what she said) and I've finally found something vaguely interesting. I realise it's not the most amazing of discoveries, and I'm not sure if it's been found before. It starts off like this:
OOOOOOO
OOOXOXO
OOOXXOO
OXXXOOO
OOOOOOO
It forms a 116-cell constellation in generation 1,107. What do you think? Is it new? Is it interesting?

It appears very similar to the r-pentomino, which has one fewer cell and lasts for 1103 generations.

Yes, generation 3 of the pattern is the r-pentomino so it isn't new but it's interesting. :)

It is? I didn't notice. Thanks.

A pentadecathlon appears in the ash.

Code: Select all

x = 8, y = 5, rule = B3/S23
2o$o$o$bo4b2o$6bo!
It's a simple pi-heptomino block explosion so I guess it's not new. I find it interesting, though...

I have searched for this and haven't found a reference.
This is a blinker and glider in a 6x5 box that runs to 2602 generations before being stable, emitting 5 gliders on the way.
x = 5, y = 6, rule = B3/S23

Now I have found a vague reference on page 4 of "The Online Life-Like CA Soup Search".
Here's another blinker glider in a 6x4 that runs for 555 emitting 2 gliders.
x = 6, y = 4, rule = B3/S23

Heinrich Koenig has run all possible collisions between a glider and known stationary objects up to 16 cells (see here).

About 90% through the 17 bit stable objects, and once those are done will probably not continue with the 18s. Although I probably should do the 17 bit oscillators, just to be complete.

Haven't found much of interest since the natural Clock early in the 17s. No unusual oscillators or large stable objects. No Switch Engines, which is the biggest disappointment. A few of the interactions produced two spaceships, but always in different directions. Did recently find an interesting new Pentadecathlon predecessor that might actually have some use--

Code: Select all

#C 17.6666 -> Pentadecathlon
x=11, y=8

Here's a still-life that I made with careful cell placement that's kind of like a giant box, but I'm not sure if I was beaten to the punch or not:

Code: Select all

x = 10, y = 10, rule = B3/S23
2obo2bob2o$2ob4ob2o2$2ob4ob2o$bobo2bobo$bobo2bobo$2ob4ob2o2$2ob4ob2o$

Here it is tiled:

The tiling you gave is a pseudo agar (consists of many non-interacting parts). By using just the box, it can be made into a true stable agar:

Code: Select all

x = 99, y = 99, rule = B3/S23

hi(im new,first post :roll: ) think I found something while messing around with a hivenudger2 producing a (what I'm calling) a blinker eating spaceship(it follows a line of blinkers eating thim to survive)unfortunately I tried to replacate it but ended up with a hiesnderp(when you find something but try to replacate it it refuses to happen again :evil: )here it is

Welcome to the forums! That is a rather cool discovery. The technical name would be a fuse (the line of blinkers is a wick or fuse, that "burns"). Because it does not leave messy debris behind, it is a clean fuse. It appears to burn a 2/3 the speed of light, which is a rather unusual speed for a fuse .

thank you :D
ive only been messing around with life for a few weeks now
im still not sure of all the math or terms but still its very interesting
it would be quite interesting if it was new due to it being discovered by a newbie rather than someone seasoned :lol:

That is a well-known fuse (see blinker fuse). Since it travels faster than c/2 and can be ignited easily, it has been useful in constructing several patterns, including moving sawtooth and various adjustable-period c/2 rakes.

I'm certain I'm not the first one to see this, but this constellation of 4 boats is common:

Code: Select all

#CXRLE Pos=0,0 Gen=0
x = 9, y = 7, rule = B36/S23
bo5bo$obo3bobo$2o5b2o2$2o5b2o$obo3bobo$bo5bo!
Can someone find a common predecessor of this?

P120 prepulsar hassler. Probably not very novel.

I’ve only been on the game of life for a few days and have created 3 designs that I find interesting:

Code: Select all

x = 257, y = 15, rule = B3/S23
8bo7bo7bo7bo7bo7bo7bo7bo7bo7bo7bo7bo7bo7bo7bo7bo7bo7bo7bo7bo7bo7bo7bo

I am guessing the 1st and 2nd would be considered fuses (?), but they travel orthogonally at the speed of light until they “Burn” out.

The last is an add-on for the second “fuse”; it repeats every 12 generations (Until the fuse "burns" out) and leaves a trail of blinkers behind it.

They are called superstrings, see e.g. Stephen Silvers life lexicon.

Gabriel Nivaschs page on light speed signals has some applications.

I've found a twin B heptomino puffer, but B-heptominoes are arranged in a different way than here.

Code: Select all

x = 5, y = 25, rule = B3/S23

Also I've found two variants of more compact debris for it.

This one is especially interesting, because it's glide-symmetric.

It's a simple pi-heptomino block explosion so I guess it's not new. I find it interesting, though...
This reaction has been known since 1971 (see Lifeline Vol. 4) A glider colliding a mango precedes it.

Hey, i am new here.
So anyway, i found this pattern that looks like a methuselah but i am not sure about it

Code: Select all

Pattern in bottom right is methuselah, but whole pattern isn't (within normal definition of methuselah). This is nice longly staying pattern, but most methuselahs have relatively small bounding box (mostly defined as up to 20x20)
First question ever. Often referred to as The Question. When this question is asked in right place in right time, no one can lie. No one can abstain. But when The Question is asked, silence will fall. Silence must fall. The Question is: Doctor Who?
