There is this nice p3 180 reflector floating around, which seemingly can be used to make true period guns, I tried to make it work for p4, though I am not sure if there is a better solution hidden already hidden in the forums, since I have no clue when that reaction was first noted:

Well, I just proposed a p4 solution, I guess I did not say that clearly, sorry about that... I was just wondering if there was a better solution floating around already, making this suboptimal.

There is also plenty of sparks that could replace the eater too, maybe allowing this to be much smaller, but at least what I found in the not in the way of the diagonal of the outgoing glider.

I one manages to remove 6 rows, and the figure 8 instead with a spark, there might be a few guns like the p64 that could be made smaller I would guess.

That reaction is already known and is used (with well-optimised sparkers) in the Catagolue gun collection, where it is found in the true-period guns of period 49, 51, 52 and 57 (sort-of, it's a bit complicated).

Ponds are notoriously difficult to eat cleanly. E.g. it takes two gliders to remove a pond; to remove one from a synthesis, it's usually easier to hit the pond predecessor with a glider.

While you can technically eliminate an isolated pond with one glider, doing so creates a fairly large plume of junk first. In most syntheses where spurious ponds occur, the ponds are close enough to the target object that destroying the pond with one glider also destroys the target object.

I would like to see how low in population the p4 and p8 versions can go – they may be useful for Skopje. I have not been able to bring the populations down to the point where they get sparser than what I already have in the git repo.

Welcome to the forums!
Generally, pure glider generators and puffers aren't that interesting since many examples of both are known. If every one of these discovered was posted, I'd guarantee that this forum would be cluttered with such posts.

As for advice, I would recommend referring to the various collections of patterns in CGoL, as well as the book, to familiarize yourself as to what's known and what's not, as well as whether your discoveries might be interesting. Examples of uninteresting discoveries include, but are not limited to:

- The patterns mentioned above.
- Methuselahs that don't last at least 20,000 generations, fit in a 20x20 box, or produce a rare object.
- Still lives, oscillators, and spaceships that don't have any significance, especially low-period ones (Ex: random 200 cell p2)
- Rediscoveries of common or well-known objects (as stated, refer to collections to find out what's known).
- Suboptimal stabilizations of already known objects.

Sorry if I let you down or demotivated you, I was just trying to help you out. :D
B2n3-jn/S1c23-y is an interesting rule. It has a replicator, a fake glider, an OMOS and SMOS, a wide variety of oscillators, and some signals. Also this rule is omniperiodic.

All that said, this "Thread for unsure discoveries" is a very good place to post things like this, where you're not sure about the notability or interestingness of a discovery, for whatever reason.

Hello, if you draw a straight line across the centre of Carnival Shuttle you get to O's / +'s after 25 turns, Don't know if this is already known.

Are you referring to what this creates?

x = 3, y = 2, rule = B3/S23

Welcome to the forums! Maybe just try making your suggested edits to the carnival-shuttle pattern below, using the pencil edit button in LifeViewer:

Code: Select all

x = 38, y = 7, rule = B3/S23
33bo3bo$2o3b2o26b5o$bobobo3bo2bo6b2o3bo2bo7bo$b2ob2o2b2o3b2o4b2o2b2o3b
2o4bobo$bobobo3bo2bo6b2o3bo2bo7bo$2o3b2o26b5o$33bo3bo!
Then when you have it right, use LifeViewer again to copy out the pattern in RLE format. It should end up looking something like like this:

x = 38, y = 7, rule = B3/S23
33bo3bo$2o3b2o26b5o$bobobo3bo2bo6b2o3bo2bo7bo$b2ob2o2b2o3b2o4b2o2b2o3b
2o4bobo$bobobo3bo2bo6b2o3bo2bo7bo$2o3b2o26b5o$33bo3bo!

... Then paste that RLE code into a message, and put "code" blocks around it by selecting the code and clicking the "</>" button on the message menu bar.

If you're using Golly, or if you're using some other Life editor software, or doing everything on mobile, the instructions would be a bit different.

Relatively few patterns of this type would really count as discoveries, per se, since it's possible to draw lines through almost any starting pattern and end up with all kinds of different outputs. Have to start somewhere, though!

Exactly. Those are the two traffic lights you were describing. That's not an uncommon result for a bilaterally symmetric starting pattern -- you get the same thing with other line lengths, for example:

Code: Select all

x = 49, y = 7, rule = B3/S23
40bo3bo$7b2o3b2o26b5o$8bobobo3bo2bo6b2o3bo2bo7bo$49o$8bobobo3bo2bo6b2o
3bo2bo7bo$7b2o3b2o26b5o$40bo3bo!

8G synthesis of a Gosper glider gun isomer:

Code: Select all

x = 56, y = 25, rule = B3/S23
3$22bo$21bo$21b3o$5bo$6b2o9bobo$5b2o11b2o21bo$18bo21bo$40b3o2$15bo$15b
2o$14bobo3$37b3o10b2o$37bo12bobo$38bo11bo$31b2o$32b2o$31bo!
Here's the wiki's synth for the "canonical" variant, for comparison:

Code: Select all

x = 47, y = 14, rule = b3/s23
16bo30b$16bobo16bo11b$16b2o17bobo9b$obo10bo21b2o10b$b2o11b2o31b$bo11b
2o32b3$10b2o20b2o13b$11b2o19bobo9b3o$10bo21bo11bo2b$27bo17bob$27b2o18b
$26bobo!
Back to the first one, shifting the right four up four cells yields another trivial isomer:

Code: Select all

x = 48, y = 16, rule = B3/S23
17bo$16bo19bo$16b3o16bo$o34b3o$b2o9bobo$2o11b2o$13bo3$10bo$10b2o20b3o
10b2o$9bobo20bo12bobo$33bo11bo$26b2o$27b2o$26bo!
The same can be done for the wiki's synthesis to yield a fourth:

Code: Select all

x = 47, y = 22, rule = B3/S23
2$16bo$16bobo$16b2o$obo10bo$b2o11b2o$bo11b2o20bo$35bobo$35b2o$10b2o$
11b2o$10bo2$32b2o$32bobo9b3o$32bo11bo$27bo17bo$27b2o$26bobo!
Has the space of "queen-bee-and block interacting with another queen-bee-and-block" been exhaustively searched yet? I assume it has, given there's no other known successful (i.e. the glider escapes) two-queen-bee guns without trivial block shifts like these. Whether it has been or not, it'd make for an interesting catagolue stdin symmetry, as would three bees and more.

Yes. There are three that produce gliders. One is the Gosper Glider Gun, one is unsalvageable, and one works if the glider gets reflected immediately but not on its own.
