Can be a switch, using a 3rd glider:
That looks useful. What is the minimum period of a toggle-able gun using it?

Which is probably not what you meant. In practice the lower glider would be preceded by the reset glider about half the time, 14 ticks ahead, so the minimum period would be 197. Which is prime though, and a p14 inserter requires an oscillator, as seen in the p14 glider gun, so the period would have to be larger than that. The closest I got before calling it a day was p202.

It is possible to use a semisnark as a switch, but only with in-phase gliders apparently:

Code: Select all

x = 198, y = 155, rule = LifeHistory

Using closely spaced reset gliders won't work (unless the space is larger than the semisnark's recovery time), since after toggling the reset glider becomes the main glider:

This is not an intermittent stream according to the Life wiki. The pattern will break if you delete random gliders out of it (if you delete glider *pairs*, it is not a semisnark any more).

A reset glider is not strictly necessary, but it speeds things up (or rather, saves space). Compare the following PRNG, with in-phase reset (which could also be done with a semisnark), with the one in my previous post:

It is almost the same size, but its period is much lower (46736, P=127, K=7 according to Dean Hickerson's table). The previously posted one has period 227584 (P=889, K=10). Since the randomness is proportional to the P values, you would get 7 times as many "random" samples from the same size, despite the rather lame NW31 inserter. With a more closely spaced reset glider you get more. The above mentioned p202 has period 657510, P=3255, K=12, still with basically the same size (which could of course be reduced by using trombone slides).

I found another conduit that works with the device (PL*124R), but it is even slower (259):

Code: Select all

x = 40, y = 36, rule = LifeHistory

I need a toggleable gun at p364, so that will work. However, I'll probably use your permanent switch here.
I am tentatively considering myself back.

Semicenark switch with non-intermittent input

This makes use of the cpsemicenark's overclocking capacity, alternating between 36 and 38 ticks spacing:

Code: Select all

Sadly, the p50 minimum advertised in the Life Lexicon is unattainable, p74 would be the minimum. This will break if you delete random gliders out of it:

Here is a complicated glider eater interaction:

Code: Select all

x = 20, y = 16, rule = B3/S23
8bo2bo2b2o$8b4o2bo2b2o$15bobo$6b6o2b2obo$6bo5bo3bo$8b2obob3o$9bobobo$

$obo4bo8b2o$obo2bo10bobo$bo3b2o9bo!
What interests me is that the glider is first eaten by a TWIT mechanism, but the reaction is relayed over to a second TWIT. These can't be strung into a long chain, sadly, but maybe someone experienced with drifter can find an actual chainable signal like this.

The mechanism is not new since it's recorded in the 1998 eater stamp collection. If it were easy to connect to a 2c/3 signal elbow...

if it were not for the fact that the reaction leaves a lot of junk laying around, this pattern could be made into a spaceship.

It's at least better than the one you had posted earlier, it doesn't leave as much junk behind.

good point, but to make it into a spaceship you'd need to clear all the junk without disturbing the blocks layed down by the b-heptominos.

A 3-generation 16x16 predecessor to generation 1 of the 1277-tick diehard (minus sparks), so this should be the current record 16x16 diehard:

Maybe a superstring?

Post by Player » December 19th, 2020, 3:41 am

Code: Select all

x = 35, y = 11, rule = Conway's Life
o$2o$o2$o$2ob3ob3ob3ob3ob3ob3ob3ob3o$o2$o$2o$o!
Left is three parts that similar to Titanic toroidal traveler.
Right is lots of blinkers in a line.
This superstring can move very rapid. (I haven't measured its speed yet, maybe c/2?)
It leaves four blocks at the starting point. No debris is left when moving. At the end, the boat and the box are left.

Is it discovered? Or I discover it?

It has a glider synthesis here, so it's definitely known. Also, even if that particular still life weren't known, unless it has some special property, like a novel catalysis mechanism, it would not merit mentioning, as 4a of the forum rules explains. The one exception is if something about the object's formation is useful. For example, if by seeing this while playing with fishhooks, you mean that some reaction converted a fishhook into that still life that could potentially yield a cheaper, easier to construct via slow salvo, or otherwise useful glider synthesis, please post the reaction. If, on the other hand, you mean that you drew some cells next to a fishhook in a way that happened to result in a still-life, don't bother.
I am tentatively considering myself back.

Can you post the reaction you found it in? Or did you just make it by drawing?

I don't think so, but it doesn't look to be of much use -- the necessary spark insertion at generation 28 is completely unreachable.

Yes, but along with Kazyan's recent c/61 orthogonal partial and a couple of other examples where a common object or arrangement of common objects happens to form from almost the same setup except translated or glide-reflected, it could suggest that looking for high-period spaceships where one phase happens to form again because it's composed of common objects might be worthwhile. For all we know, the Pi-R-Squared spaceship could actually exist, although it's about equally as likely to have period 136 instead of 137, move two cells every period instead of one, have the pi-grandparents occur at the same time as parents of the R-pentomino instead of R-pentominos themselves, or any other minor change.
Then again, because of how combinations work, near-misses are much more likely than perfect spaceships because there are a lot of ways for only one cell to be wrong, but there is only one way for every cell to be correct, so there are probably more fruitful searches that can be done for the immediate future.
I am tentatively considering myself back.
