Rediscovering low-period oscillators is a good way to familiarize yourself with Conway's Game of Life. If you want to get a sense of what's known, you should take a look at the jsife pattern collection (available here). It contains an oscillator section that shows most of the significant oscillators found before 2013. I compiled a supplemental collection that includes oscillators found from the beginning of 2013 to the end of 2014.
