What's this eater called?

Code: Select all

``````x = 23, y = 25, rule = LifeHistory
2A.A2.A.2A\$2A.4A.2A2\$2A.4A.2A\$.A.A2.A.A\$.A.A2.A.A\$2A.4A.2A2\$2A.4A.2A\$
2A.A2.A.2A13\$20.3C\$20.C\$21.C!``````
The Eater 2 has many variants, so I doubt that every single variant has its own name.
Marine has a non-centered Moore neighborhood and at least one elementary gun with a very high period (11,843).
I think that I also looked into that engine pair, including with different relative timings.
Nice find. Is the ten-cell shape at generation 935 interacting with a dot spark, domino spark, or duoplet spark the most common source of natural twin bees?
I'm not really sure yet.
This looks like it could have potential for making a twin bees conduit, which would, among other things, allow stable circuitry with a p46 toggle gun feature. (Has something like that already been made for p30?) Instead of trying to make that shape then add a dot spark to it, we should try to make a honey farm predecessor then modify it in some way. Edgeshooting a blinker for this purpose seems challenging at best, but this looks promising.
Code: Select all
``````x = 5, y = 7, rule = B3/S23
2o2bo\$2b2o2\$2b2o\$b2obo\$2bobo\$3bo!``````
If a table can be made instead of a beehive, then the reaction forms twin bees.

Code: Select all

``````x = 4, y = 7, rule = B3/S23
obo\$3o2\$3o\$o2bo\$2obo\$2bo!``````
Also, another phrase is a couple of dot sparks behind a queen bee, and the phase is a couple of domino sparks behind the previous phase of the queen bee, so that avenue may also be worth investigating.
The pre–∏ interacting with a blinker seems to be the most common, which makes sense because it requires the fewest cells and looks the most edgeshootable.
Still, this is not sufficient to split the tracks and add "I" or "century" in the reference (that I-to-E does not link to anything too), so the short message is that there is a century to R and to G already defined.
Is this I→B new? It isn't in that list, but it seems so simple.
Code: Select all
``````x = 9, y = 6, rule = LifeHistory
6.D\$5.3D\$5.D.CD\$2A4.2C\$2A2.3C\$4.C!
#C [[ T 8 PAUSE 0.5 ]]``````
It can link up with other conduits.

Code: Select all

``````x = 26, y = 46, rule = LifeHistory
2.A\$2.3A\$5.A\$4.2A7\$15.2C\$13.3C\$14.C4\$2.2A\$.A.A\$.A\$2A19.D\$19.3D2.2A\$18.2D4.2A\$17.2D.D\$8.A.2A6.3D\$8.2A.A7.D2\$17.2A\$17.2A16\$17.3D\$19.D\$18.3D!``````
Here's a variant.
Code: Select all
``````x = 9, y = 6, rule = LifeHistory
6.D\$5.3D\$5.D.CD\$6.2C\$2A2.3C\$2A2.C!``````

Edit:

Code: Select all

``````x = 19, y = 17, rule = LifeHistory
15.2A\$15.A\$2A14.A\$.A9.2A2.2A\$.A.A7.A.A\$2.2A9.A.4A\$12.2A.A2.A3\$11.C\$10.2C\$8.3C\$8.C\$10.D\$9.2D\$8.2D\$9.D!``````
Unfortunately, it doesn't look easy to connect.
Marine has a non-centered Moore neighborhood and at least one elementary gun with a very high period (11,843).
It pretty definitely counts as new if you can start with a Herschel somehow, and put a signal through your I-to-B and back to a Herschel again. With luck that will make an H-to-H conduit with a new never-before-seen systemic name -- F{nnn} or Lx{nnn} or whatever; that would make it clearly both new and potentially useful.
Are you trying to say that the C→I conduit looks like feeding a century into it might be impossible? In case so, here is a demonstration that that conduit can be connected.
Code: Select all
``````x = 40, y = 46, rule = LifeHistory
2.A\$2.3A\$5.A\$4.2A\$20.2A\$21.A\$21.A.2A\$22.A.A13.2A\$37.A.A\$38.A\$15.2D11.C.C\$13.3D12.C.C\$14.D13.3C4\$2.2A\$.A.A24.2A\$.A26.2A\$2A19.D\$19.3D2.2A\$18.2D4.2A\$17.2D.D\$8.A.2A6.3D\$8.2A.A7.D2\$17.2A\$17.2A16\$17.3D\$19.D\$18.3D!``````
There is another demonstration for that conduit here, but it doesn't work with my particular conduit because the block would be too close to a fishhook.

I only followed the I→B conduit with Conduit 1 in order to demonstrate that the I→B that I found can be connected to other conduits. I did not intend to imply that I believe in a Herschel-centric conduit system.

Herschel-centricity is actually very versatile and simple given predecessors of the Herschel often start in one direction before forming the Herschel, which proceeds in a 90-degree wedge. Also, Herschels are common enough to show up everywhere. A kind of bad analogy would be using paragliders as the main form air travel instead of the already-existent æroplanes.

Based on my personal experience from making conduits, R sequences occur at least twice (probably at least three times) as frequently as Herschel sequences that don't originate from R sequences.

R sequences have one major flaw: Rs leave the site quickly leaving behind that HF+TL thing, and suppressing it with any sort of clearance is hard.

I have made or independently discovered many conduits or partial conduits accepting R, and that does not seem to be a problem.

Alright, so that problem's solved. Now there are two steps more:
1) Prove that they are completable and connectable,
2) Integrate them into the Herschel-centric conduit system you're about 25 years too late to change.

I've done that for some of them, particularly the ones that I've discovered later. I will admit that the R-sequence didn't always end up pointing in the outward direction, but I have a partial conduit that is very good at fixing that.

2) Integrate them into the Herschel-centric conduit system you're about 25 years too late to change.
I think that simply connecting them to any other conduit that is already known to be connectable should be sufficient. If my conduit makes a B-heptomino, then the first conduit that I'll try sticking after it is BFx59H, but if my conduit intakes a century, then I'll try at least one ∏→C conduit before trying any other way to make the century. I have no objection to the existence of Herschel conduits, but I have an objection to treating conduits that do not start and end with a Herschel as somehow less valid. Furthermore, I believe that this culture of requiring "true" conduits to start and end with a Herschel has resulted in detrimental effects on pattern-making, such as the frustratingly long repeat time of Bx222 when the HF95P could instead be followed by a conduit that does not result in an output object going in the same direction that the input object came from.
I do not favor an R-centric conduit system, or a bias towards any single object in conduit-making, for that matter. While I did initially focus on conduits accepting R−B or R−H, this was because I believed that these were under-investigated starting points, not because I was trying to bring about an R-centric conduit system. I have since investigated other starting points that I believe are underinvestigated, such as the dove and the I-heptomino. Even when I first got into conduit-making, I investigated other starting points, such as E−B, that I felt were underinvestigated. As further evidence that I am not anti-Herschel, just anti-inequality, I have posted several ways that I found to make a Herschel that did not develop in the standard manner from a B-sequence.

That is the latest that I have even seen something enter the Herschel sequence. This could be great if we figured out a way to clean it up: We wouldn't need to worry about that pesky block in conduits like Bx222 and Bx125. Unfortunately, this is the best that I've found.

Code: Select all

``````x = 19, y = 18, rule = B3/S23
bo11bo\$b3o7b3o\$4bo5bo\$3b2o5b2o7\$6bo\$5b2o\$5bo2bo\$6b3o\$2o5bo7b2o\$2o13bobo\$17bo\$17b2o!``````
Here's another way to get a Herschel sequence from something besides a B-sequence.
I doubt that it would be possible to get a conduit out of this (although that's what I thought last time).
Code: Select all
I was wrong.
Code: Select all
Another edit: I somehow made a Herschel going in the opposite direction (although it's definitely useless unless, at the very least, someone finds a more compact V-sparker).
I was wondering what common but not extensively searched methuselahs to search for conduits for, so I tried seeing how this played out.
Code: Select all
``````x = 5, y = 4, rule = B3/S23
3o\$o2bo\$bo2bo\$2b3o!``````
To my surprise, it makes two Hershcels minus their first natural gliders, which I had been wondering about ways to make a while back. I decided to look for predecessors, and after finding 3b2o\$b2obo\$ob2o\$2o. I continued looking for predecessors and found this instead.

Code: Select all

``````x = 5, y = 4, rule = B3/S23
2b3o\$3b2o\$2o\$3o!``````
I then tried to find paperclip predecessors with less than ten cells based on this, and while I did not find any, I did find this.
Code: Select all
``````x = 5, y = 7, rule = B3/S23
bo\$bobo\$3bo\$4bo\$2o2bo\$bo\$2bo!``````

Edit: I just found this when I was trying to remember a partial ∏-to-LOM conduit.

Code: Select all

``````x = 5, y = 4, rule = B3/S23
bo\$bo\$ob3o\$bo!``````
Look at the boat (or rather, what becomes of the boat) starting at generation 128.
Code: Select all
14b2o\$14bo\$bo10bobo\$obo9b2o\$2o5\$14b2o\$8bo5b2o\$7b3o\$7bo!``````
Edit: I just realized that it's not just some random collision of a glider with a boat and block but rather a wing plus block reaction, so it doesn't seem so useless now.
By the way, does anyone know of a more compact domino sparker that works?
Edit: This looks significantly harder.
Code: Select all
It also works when adding a cell to an LoM without other junk.
It pretty definitely counts as new if you can start with a Herschel somehow, and put a signal through your I-to-B and back to a Herschel again.
Are you trying to say that the C→I conduit looks like feeding a century into it might be impossible? In case so, here is a demonstration that that conduit can be connected.
Hmm, well the problem now is that the Pi->C used here requires an extremely tight Pi input, which no conduits are able to provide currently. I'm not sure if it was included in the collection as a "maybe it will be usable someday" or if its inclusion was an error. A tight-fitting Pi injector conduit would make a ton of discarded Pi conduits usable (possibly including this one, though its margins are extra tight) but unfortunately no such conduit has been found yet. I checked all the other century outputs in the collection and none of them seem to fit, even PL*328C, which fails because the way the conduit turns interferes with one of the eaters. Hopefully we'll have another edgy C output someday that's in the right orientation to work with this sequence.
... Of course, Jormungant already showed that there is a working H->C->I->G sequence using this converter, so it's just that the choices of I conduit that are currently compatible with it in a *complete* conduit are limited currently.
I just saw that conduit in the elementary conduits collection, figured that it must be connectable if it was there, and realized that the output century has good clearance in the directions that I typically want clearance in for the output century. However, like you said, there are definitely more options available; we just haven't found all of them yet.
Also, look at generation 21 of that ∏→C: It's that boat-making methuselah that I found some conduits accepting here.
p37 bumper
A colour-changing p37 reflection is known (http://www.conwaylife.com/wiki/index.php?title=132P37); I don't know if this is:
p37 bumper
I looked at the image in the article, and none of the examples have loaves, which means that none of them are bumper reactions. However, the variety of sparks that the bumper accepts is wide enough that it seems possible that someone else has thought to try to use that oscillator in a bumper before.
Edit: Actually, the method isn't so obvious, so what you found is probably a new discovery. Good job.
Another edit: It turns out that the spark for a bumper can be delivered one generation earlier than the LifeWiki page says, but it creates a block that must be eaten.
Code: Select all
``````x = 52, y = 60, rule = B3/S23
2bo\$obo\$b2o13\$17bo\$15bobo\$16b2o10\$29bo\$27bobo\$28b2o7\$38bo\$36bobo\$37b2o

o4bo4b2o\$40bob4o\$37b3obo3bo\$40bo2bo\$40bo2bo\$40bo2bo\$42bo!``````
Certain other types of sparks, such as V sparks in a certain orientation, prevent the block from forming, thus making a block eater unnecessary.
Also, domino sparkers can support the bumper, although that's probably known despite being somewhat counter-intuitive.

Code: Select all

``````x = 95, y = 54, rule = B3/S23
Yet another edit: I found another oscillator that can support the alternative bumper mechanism that I may have discovered.
Code: Select all
``````x = 46, y = 43, rule = B3/S23

Arbitrary period bumpers and bouncers

Bumpers and bouncers can be built with any period >= 74 (and with the pattern on the right, with any period >= 34. You can build fake p38 and p41 oscillators):
