Well ... we can, but I don't see how to use this particular engine as a useful part of a self-supporting spaceship.

The key thing that's missing is any kind of over-unity reaction. See the wiki article, and previous explanations for similar questions such as this discussion.

The reaction shown in the original post produces as many gliders as it uses up, at least. That's a good sign as far as it goes, though it's only "unity" and not "over-unity". But the output gliders are 90 degrees off from the input gliders. Unless there's a way to change them back to the original orientation and spacing, those gliders aren't really relevant to the hypothetical construction of a self-supporting spaceship.
