Although it is (or will be) large, I have constructed an arbitrarily-high period Herschel conduit, F180:

It is shown with an F117 conduit attached to it, showing how the F180 can fit into (somewhat) tight spaces. It does use spaceships, though. (This could spawn a whole new class of Herschel conduits.)

The LWSS can be replaced by a sparker, a standard eater, a tub-with-tail eater, and a rectifier at a severe cost to recovery time:

Unfortunately this doesn't make it much more versatile as it still requires two synchronized gliders.
