New P120 oscillator?

Post by Lewis » June 15th, 2009, 3:01 pm

I found an oscillator based on the P30 glider gun, which I haven't seen in pattern collections before. Is it new, or have I just re-discovered it?

x = 71, y = 50, rule = 23/3

Wow! That's really interesting! I don't think this is a discovered pattern.

I've managed to create a smaller version of the pattern by moving the guns closer together.

x = 57, y = 36, rule = 23/3

I think that the oscillator is new, even though the principle itself isn't (colliding streams from p30 glider guns to create high-period oscillators).

Take, for example, this pattern:

Code: Select all

x = 71, y = 28, rule = B3/S23

That's not quite an oscillator. This is:

Code: Select all

x = 71, y = 37, rule = B3/S23

It's period 270. What an interesting way of creating MWSSes...

That's why I used this reaction as an example. Someone else felt the need to
make an MWSS gun out of this. It uses two copies of the reaction:

Code: Select all

x = 52, y = 51, rule = S23/B3
