Re: Suggested LifeWiki edits

Would it make sense to move Articles/Line crossers and Articles out of the main namespace (for example, into the LifeWiki: namespace -- to LifeWiki:Articles/Line crossers and LifeWiki:Articles respectively), given that these appear to be "meta" relative to the usual LifeWiki pages written for readers?

My thoughts are basically that the main namespace and the OCA: namespace contain many wiki pages that can be described as articles, written to be read by readers in the "larger community" and by anyone interested. Hence, having the two pages linked above located in the main namespace with "Articles" written in the title appears to be somewhat confusing for a reader.

Meanwhile, if we want to do some Lifeviewerization of 2020 Patterns of the Year or other interesting new patterns, we could set up some mini-articles in LifeWiki's Articles/POTY2020/ or Articles/HomePage space. The POTY ones could be partly for practice for 2021: it's possible that LifeViewerized patterns might be what the POTY2021 nomination and voting threads link to, whenever such articles are available. It would give people a chance to do a little advertising, and make their nominations look good.

(And then during the next year those articles could be showcased on the home page, one per week or whatever, similar to the LifeWiki's "featured articles".)

I believe that we should add (23,5)c/79 Herschel climber to Category:Boat-crawling_crawlers:

Here are a few 'Did You Know' entries that could be added to the web page if desirable.
(If there are multiple of these to be added, maybe they could be scattered throughout the list so that they don't appear as one big unaesthetic block.)

that c/2 spaceships are known for all periods which are a multiple of eight based on bi-block puffers?

that c/2 spaceships are known for all periods which are an odd multiple of four starting with 612 based on blinker puffers?

that c/2 spaceships are known for an infinite number of periods which are not a multiple of four (e.g. 378 + 588N) based on irregular blinker puffers?

that c/3 spaceships are known for all periods of the form 159 + 3N based on glider loops?

that c/4 spaceships are known for all periods of the form 388 + 4N based on glider loops?

that c/5 spaceships are known for all periods of the form 165 + 5N based on glider loops?

It's currently 120 + 4N. It should be possible to construct glider loop based rakes (and hence ships) down to period 92 as I suggested here, but nobody has yet tried to complete the construction.

Technically to make glider loop based rakes at periods 92 + 4N we would need fanouts that work at these periods (and a HWSS synthesis that works at p92). In the link above I only show fanouts for periods 92, 108, 112, and 116 (the only "unsolved" periods above 80). Fanouts for periods 96 and 100 work essentially like the fanout for period 92. A p104 fanout is also easy to make:

Since there is already rakes for periods 96, 100, and 104, I see no need to construct a glider-loop based example. This is simply to show that it can be done.

that c/5 spaceships are known for all periods of the form 165 + 5N based on glider loops?
Paul Tooke's c/5 orthogonal rakes collection has glider loop based rakes of periods 60, 65, 70, 75, and 80. I always assumed all higher periods could be achieved using the same basic principles, but I never attempted to prove it for myself.

Thanks, sokwe, for the updates on the c/4 and c/5 spaceship periods. I didn't remember those improvements.

> that c/2 spaceships are known for all periods which are an odd multiple of four starting with 612 based on blinker puffers?

I examined this again, and realised that the 612 can be reduced to 596.

i think that the R-turner should get it's own page, because of the mention of the pattern in the Conduit, Four Boats, 112P57, and p60 B-heptomino hassler pages, as well as the mentions of it on the forum.

It's in your userspace, so it's your decision. If consensus says that it doesn't deserve an article, it will likely go back to userspace rather than being deleted, so there's no harm in trying.

What is yujh's real name? On the wiki, the infobox says Jihao Yu while the text says Jiahao yu.

the Line of three page should be deleted, since it has been nearly a year since it was proposed to be deleted and no objections have been made since then.

I found the cheapest variant of p146 pi-heptomino hassler can be constructed with 19 gliders and its canonical variant can be constructed with 20 gliders.

The Period-34_glider_gun only supports S8 or B8, but not both.

I suggest that the list of SKOPs on the Oscillator wiki page could be expanded to include all periods from 1 to 200. Period 1 is currently missing and there are a lot of gaps after p120. Also the p136 entry is incorrect, it should be figure eight on p68 century hassler with 50 cells. The p79 entry also has an error, the population should be 80, not 82.

It would be nice if it was mentioned in the wiki (maybe in the 'Did you know...' section) that the largest SKOP of any period is currently the p67 Snark loop (228 cells), followed by the p41 dependent glider loop (204 cells) and p103 glider loop (180 cells). I'm fairly sure that these are the top three.

Also it is known that an oscillator with 141 or fewer cells exists for each period greater than or equal to 179, but this doesn't seem to be mentioned in the wiki, or at least not on the Oscillator page.

The left p12 in "R-pentomino hasslers" should be advanced one generation.

"...and requires fewer gliders?" reading this I think we should add "to construct" to the end, because otherwise why does either pattern need gliders?

I don't think I'm understanding this suggestion. To make the two p12s match, I'd have to advance the right p12 by one tick.

Backing up the left p12 by one tick doesn't produce a matching recognizable R, and advancing one tick definitely doesn't make anything match. Am I missing something here?

What I think happened: as of this revision of RLE:P12rpentominohasslers, the left p12 showed a recognizable r-pentomino, but it wasn't actually a phase of the oscillator. Confocal fixed that (referencing this request). Maybe there's something to be said that now the R sequences in the two patterns are out of phase with each other, but at least the left one is a valid phase of the oscillator now.

Ah, makes sense! I should have checked the RLE history and not just the article history.

I went ahead and made the phases of the two oscillators match. That probably wasn't really necessary, but given the variety of phases of Rs that have to be used elsewhere in the article, it's probably okay to standardize on that one. If someone wants to revert the change, go ahead.
