Re: Pattern viewer for forum threads

A couple of feature requests:

-Are there any plans to support [R]History rules for Margolus and 2-state HROT rules? I can't think of many problems that would result from implementing support for these rulespaces since they only have 2 states in the first place.

Code: Select all

x = 32, y = 44, rule = Bosco's RuleHistory
26.A$24.5A$22.5A.2A$21.5A3.2A$21.4A5.A$20.4A5.3A$21.4A3.3A$21.5A.4A$
22.8A$23.7A$24.5A23$3.5D$2.7D$2.8D$.4D.5D$.3D3.4D$3D5.4D$.D5.4D$.2D3.
5D$2.2D.5D$3.5D$5.D!
-Can a script command be added for reversible rules that has reverse playback activated by default?

-If LifeViewer detects that a pattern is too large, can a button be added to attempt to relaunch LifeViewer with an expanded maxgridsize to see if the pattern can be accommodated that way?

-Will HROT B0 be supported?

Try changing the rule of this pattern into a Margolus rule (either by using the in-viewer rule changer or by quoting this post and changing the rule at the top of the RLE) and lines of cells at the very bottom and right will be killed. It seems to move all the cells up and to the left, resulting in this.

Not currently. It's possible I'll add it to Margolus at some stage but it's highly unlikely I'll add it to HROT.

Yes.

If LifeViewer detects that a pattern is too large, can a button be added to attempt to relaunch LifeViewer with an expanded maxgridsize to see if the pattern can be accommodated that way?
This is not a priority.

When running the Margolus pattern from here by Moosey,

Code: Select all

x=1, y=1, rule = M0,2,1,3,11,10,9,8,7,6,5,4,12,14,13,15
o!
[[ STEP 2 ]]
[[ T 0 "Potential seizure warning!" ]]
The STEP 2 command doesn't work if run continuously, but works if stepwise.

For reversible Margolus and PCA rules, can text be added somewhere that shows the reverse rule's rulestring when reverse playback is active?

And can alt gridlines be set to on by default for margolus?

And I'm not sure about the intended behaviour on this, but randomize on alternating rules does not output an alternating rule:

Code: Select all

x = 20, y = 20, rule = alternlife

Thanks for the continued fixes!

comb395 can be added as an alias for B3/S1237|B2/S:

1,s,t,u,v,w,x,y,z,0
2,s,t,u,v,w,x,y,z,0
(In a similar vein to those gun-replicators posted earlier, here's a replicator puffer:)

Code: Select all

x = 3, y = 5, rule = comb395
A$A$2.A$2B$2B!
Also, there's a few cases in the early exploration of alternating rules where patterns have been posted with the incorrect parity, with all cells being state 2, causing LifeViewer to load a blank pattern. If a pattern is found to consist solely of state 2 cells, and is to be run as an alternating rule, can the state 2 cells be converted to state 1 cells and the pattern started on generation 1 (or on generation 0 with the two rules to be alternated between reversed)?

The 22da alias is incorrect and should be B2/S2-mH

At this point I think it's probably a good idea to discuss LifeViewer's displaying of themes for ruletable rules.

For rules without specified colours, LifeViewer defaults to a reversed generations gradient across the amount of present states, which fits in line with Golly behaviour but is not necessarily always ideal (especially if the rule has a large enough amount of states such that telling between them becomes difficult). Golly also has the option of changing the default colours to display multistate rules with to a non-gradient default palette, but LifeViewer does not have this as an option to my knowledge, so to be consistent with it a way to switch to using this instead should be added.

Currently, each theme has two different palettes: one for 2-state rules, and another for rules with decay/Generations. For the default Golly colours, a new third palette type should be added to accommodate for their existence. The default golly colours would be added as the third, "custom rule" palette under the golly theme accordingly. Catagolue also has a special theme for multistate rules, but I don't know the specifics of it right now so I'll have to investigate. Pretty much all of the other themes wouldn't have any officially defined ruletable palettes though, so they'd probably just default back to using their Generations colours. I don't think that the golly and catagolue default palettes should be added as new separate themes though, since they're closely tied to said themes and this would result in unnecessary duplication.

The red-to-yellow gradient would remain the default display of multistate patterns without specified colours, either replacing the golly theme's generations colours or being added as a new theme entirely.

A button would be added to the Display menu in Settings that would allow the user to toggle between displaying using the 2-state/Generations theme and the multistate theme to display the pattern with.

Rules which do have specified colours would be considered as having a custom theme. Alternatively, the specified colours could comprise the "ruletable palette" of the new reverse generations gradient theme.

These are just my ideas on the matter though, so if anyone's got anything better to suggest on the matter then please do.

For RuleTable rules where no colours are defined I agree it would be good to allow switching between the default colour ramp and Golly's default non-ramp palette.
I'm not sure it's worth extending beyond that. It would be interesting to see how many posted patterns a) use a different Theme from the default (in any rule) or b) use custom colours.

Custom specified colours for ruletable rules are effectively a special custom theme tied to said rule, and since custom themes can be changed out of it only seems logical to allow the same behaviour for ruletable rules.

----

This rule on the top of the second page of this thread is hexagonal, but the hexagons appear to be oriented opposite to their usual Golly rotation, and as such adding neighborhood:hexagonal to the ruletable just distorts patterns in the rule further rather than correcting it to look like a proper hexagonal rule. Can LifeViewer gain some sort of way to flip the hexagons around as to make patterns render properly (e.g. some text that can be added to the Rule: page which golly would ignore but LV recognises), or should the creator of the ruletable be held completely accountable in such cases?

Code: Select all

x = 18, y = 26, rule = 24_235_4H_O3
10.CD$9.2D$8.CD.3C$8.D.C2A$10.C2A$10.C2$15.C.C$16.2A$15.C2A7$14.BA$

COLOR 3 0 0 255
COLOR 4 255 255 0
COLOR 5 0 255 255
COLOR 6 255 0 255 ]]
(Using the flip button on the pattern will end up revealing what I suspect to be what the patterns are intended to look like on a hexagonal grid, given their greater compactness and symmetry.)

Paste with PCA seems to replace cell states altogether instead of following pastemode rules. I'd assume that in the following case, pasting one of these cells over the other should result in a NE cell, but total replacement happens instead:

Code: Select all

x = 1, y = 6, rule = PCA_4

Can a script command be added that hides all the buttons, but still retains their functionality?

viewonly should also make all buttons appear grey instead, so these could be combined to get an effective image.

No because you can still zoom and pan the pattern in VIEWONLY mode.
