Personally, I don't feel like a like button is a feature that we really need right now, because it kind of turns the community into a popularity contest when it happens sometimes (depending on the situation and community), though it's also possible it would encourage more people to post interesting work. If we do end up implementing this, I agree with wildmyron that we should not have a dislike button, because that makes things much worse.
I manage the 5S project, which collects all known spaceship speeds in Isotropic Non-totalistic rules. I also wrote EPE, a tool for searching in the INT rulespace.

Things to work on:
- Find (7,1)c/8 and 9c/10 ships in non-B0 INT.
- EPE improvements.

Seriously. On Facebook and Instagram and anything else people might kneejerk-think of when they hear the term "like button", liking is a primary, core function of the application, so it follows naturally that people would be inclined to optimize for likes. Not so on a discussion forum, where "liking" is and always will be secondary but still helps immensely to cut down clutter (from "I agree" "I think so too" "I like this idea" "+1" posts that really shouldn't be posts in themselves) and to provide an easier, non-cluttery outlet for people wanting to offer encouragement in the way biggiemac described. There is zero possibility of the like button inducing a popularity-contest mentality in this forum, and to think so is to fail to consider how a "like" function would actually work here.

I agree with you, and disagree with Goldberg.

To everyone: Remember that if one calls for a dislike button and succeeds then everyone who disliked the idea of a dislike button will dislike one's post. And that would be the only time that they'd use the dislike option.

Aha. Doesn't that automatically prove a dislike button should exist? Otherwise why would they use it?

Suggestion:Likes and dislikes

Post by BokaBB » April 29th, 2021, 5:59 am

I think that some likes and maybe also dislikes would be nice to see here.
Two system proposals:
1. Just add them. They will not impact the position of the threads but will at least show people how many people are interested in things.
2. Make them impact the thread position.
At the top of every forum will be a box with five newest threads (Or alternatively ten, pleasesay what is better.). This is needed to allow new threads to be visible easily.
All the other threads are below and rated by the number of likes minus the number of dislikes (dislikes may be removed though to prevent mass disliking) with those with the bigger score and thus more interest in them being more highly on the list. However,I would suggest raising the number of threads per page to save some time.

It should be possible to allow us to change our opinions as some things may accidentally happen and we may well change our mind.
Please participate in the poll and say in comments whether this should be only for threads or also for comments and propose a system if you want comments and how much new threads should be in the top if you agree with 2.
It would also be nice for 2 to be just a customizable option and would remove many problems that it could make.

My opinion, 2 is completely ridiculous and can be used to advertise or pollute the sand box.
1 is probably OK, but it doesn’t matter since we all know what we support

In my belief the impact on The Sandbox would likely be minimal, except that it would be harder to popularize a thread.
In the rest of the subforums it would likely be a way to truthfully show what people really like and what not and would also prevent bumping.

No offense, but you mean you want to advertise pilife2 yourself? In other ways, you bump your thread to advertise them.
I know people don’t like to remove a thing once it’s there, so old useless threads could be marked like “popular”, like the b38s23/C1 of catagolue.
It won’t be worth having that it will make the forum even worse!!!!!!!!!!

From time to time I see some pretty nice messages I like, but I have nothing smart to say about them.

It would be nice to have something similar to the "Like" button in facebook. People are sometimes working pretty hard for those patterns, but they don't deserve the "congrats" with exclamation mark or something, just to convey something like "I like where you going with this..." or it's a neat idea etc.
I' m sorry but I'm against adding the like button. Many other websites with the like button got xs4_33'd.

Code: Select all

x = 21, y = 21, rule = LifeColorful
11.E$10.3E$10.E.2E$13.E4$2.2B$.2B$2B$.2B15.2D$19.2D$18.2D$17.2D4$7.C$
7.2C.C$8.3C$9.C!
I have reduced the glider cost of quadratic growth to eight and probably to seven. Looking for conduits...

OK, I'm testing out a "like/heart" button on a trial basis. You should see a heart button at the bottom-right corner of posts now. Clicking that heart "likes" the post. You can click again to remove your "like". Some notes:

- The number of people that liked each post is displayed, and hovering over it shows who liked it.
- You cannot like your own posts.
- Users themselves do not have a "score". That is, the total number of likes you have received across all of your posts is not tallied up or displayed anywhere.
- By default, you are notified any time someone "likes" one of your posts. You can change this in your user preferences page: ucp.php?i=ucp_notifications&mode=notification_options

It's just a trial basis for now. If people end up hating it, or if it ends up causing problems, it can easily be removed. Feedback welcome.

It's a little fiddly -- you have to hover right over the number (not the x or the heart itself). Does that tidbit fix the issue, or is it still broken?

Hovering over the number works.

Getting a notification every time someone likes my post seems like it's going to be annoying, especially when it happens multiple times per post.

Agreed. Fortunately, this can be turned off in your user settings: ucp.php?i=ucp_notifications&mode=notification_options

I'll update my earlier post with this info, and I'll look into making "off" the default.

I'm currently obscurely bothered by the fact that every single one of my seven thousand eight hundred and nineteen posts has exactly zero likes. Maybe I'll get over it once someone clicks the Like button on one of them.

Probably I will still prefer not to have to look at all of the little hearts at all -- I'll remain infinitesimally resentful because of the vertical screen space that they waste... but I'm sure I could get used to ignoring them if necessary.

EDIT: Yay, improved blue hearts. Now With No Vertical Screen Space Wasted! Still not sure I want them around.

There is a "Show list with all like actions" button in every user's profile page. For example, go to memberlist.php?mode=viewprofile&u=2670* and the link should lead to app.php/postlove/2670?short=1. However, concerning the second link here there are two issues:
1) Similar to the problem stated here, the conwaylife.com logo fails to be displayed.
2) A redundant "/app.php" in the links to posts and topics makes them inaccesible.

* This is deliberately chosen because I'm curious about the user's identity.

EDIT: Meanwhile, I am the 9th user to like the original post, but hovering on the number can only see the first 8 one:

Code: Select all

post liked by: Sokwe, goldenratio, andrewph33, cgoler2, cvojan, Sarp, EvinZL, ihatecorderships
I think this list is sorted by time order.
EDIT2: The change of list does not happen immediately. After refreshing the page I can see my username.
