The Tlog(t) growth page has an image for the formula. The image uses both n and t but the n should be t. This can be seen in ref 1 where t is not used and n is.

assuming I'm right, I made a new formula image and inserted it in the article

Also, should we consider making a LifeWiki template for the synthesis costs to be updated dynamically without manual edits?
That would certainly be nice, if someone wants to take the time to figure out how to do it.

On the other hand, the number of changes needed per year along these lines has been gradually decreasing, so this hasn't been a particularly high-priority to solve.

Also, I have a vague memory of it being difficult to set up a template to retrieve this information from a non-conwaylife.com location. Maybe it would require regularly updating some suitably reduced copy of a "textcensus" file? In which case, it seems almost just as easy for everyone to simply keep updating individual synth numbers whenever they notice a discrepancy.
Would it be helpful to have just one wiki page to be updated manually, instead of manual edits scattered over different pages? Something like Catagolue/Stats but with mapping from apgcodes to synthesis costs, specified for every object with a wiki page and synthesis cost.

The "Seal tagalong discovered by Beluchenko on September 22, 2005" on the Seal page is not the discovery by Beluchenko. The correct pattern file should be

Proposal: a table for true-period glider guns by over-unity reactions, which categorizes periods at least 14 by
  • No known (e.g. 14),
  • One engine with or without additional catalysts (e.g. 20, 21, 27),
  • Two-engine collision (e.g. 22, 30, 32),
  • Herschel in passing, including FNG, L156 and the recent H-to-R,
  • G-to-H plus converter where Herschel is converted to two non-H signals,
  • Sparked syringe.

I would like to draw attention of the community to the current edit war at Nihonium with myself and GUYTU16J involved, and also to Talk:MWSS out of the blue . I do not agree with some of recent edits of GUYTU16J. An independent review of edits could be helpful.

I don't have a horse in this race, but there seem to be two issues.

The first is about merge vs separate articles. I do not think there is a good general rule to follow for this. Sometimes it makes good sense to have a more comprehensive article, especially if the included examples and so forth would not be notable on their own or are better understood in a larger context. And, yes, sometimes such articles get too lengthy and are split up. Sometimes, individual focused articles work well when each stands alone as notable on its own. And at times this gets overdone and merges take place. I think many of these situations are judgement (or preference) calls and often could go either way. I am leery of general rules and am more persuaded by "in this case" arguments.

The second issue is accuracy. I defer to those with more expertise or a better turn of phrase in such cases.

In the following "did you know" there is a link to the quadratic growth section of the infinite growth article; that article section does not mention cubic growth.
... that it is possible to construct patterns that temporarily exhibit cubic growth?

(edit)--link should be changed to Superlinear growth page

Could anyone explain the process of finding final steps to oscillators and spaceships? I'm not talking about direct syntheses or soup-based syntheses, so it seems like related content is missing from the glider syntheses tutorial.

That's a really tough process to document, since it's still more of an art than a science. Would everyone agree that the first part of the process is something along the lines of

1) inspect many hundreds of syntheses in cell-by-cell detail, looking for common patterns;
2) learn how to use JLS/WLS/LLS, probably by experience (running dozens of searches and seeing what works);
3) find a predecessor for the target oscillator/spaceship that consists of a constructible stable or oscillating center with constructible sparks around it.

? That last item is where the "art" comes in, obviously... Some of the artists (like Extrementhusiast, at last report) skip step 2, but nobody can successfully skip step 1.

The beginning of the modern era of oscillator/spaceship synthesis can be traced back to Extrementhusiast showing that enough persistence could bring apparently intractable problems within reach -- starting maybe with the French kiss synthesis. That post has a nice summary of the stream-of-consciousness path leading to the discovery. The thought process for each synthesis is incredibly detailed and usually includes lots and lots of dead ends that aren't documented.

It would be interesting to see a solution to a big synthesis problem documented from end to end. Goldtiger997 has at least once written up something along these lines, but such things are pretty rare. Anyone who wants to learn the synthesis trade had better be willing to do things at this incredible level of detail -- e.g., follow through that walkthrough of Goldtiger997's and research everything in that post that doesn't make sense, until it does make sense.

Maybe walkthroughs like this are rare partly because when most people are at the starting point of a synthesis attempt, they don't have any idea whether the attempt will be successful or not... and it's not so satisfying to document a bunch of small dead ends that ultimately lead to a big dead end. Conversely, by the time a complicated synthesis is successful, most of the details of the discarded paths have probably been long forgotten.

I just ran my Python script to update the higher symmetries soups using the new all-soups, and then I realized that all-soups includes both asymmetric and symmetric, while the tabulation on the wiki excludes the asymmetric ones because they're in their own tabulation. I have the numbers (and have saved them), but I really don't want to run it again because I've already run it twice (first attempt returned an error, and it was my fault), and running it overloads the server a lot. Should the tabulation on the wiki be changed to include everything instead?

Here is the code, since I ran it and don't want to have to run it again if it's accepted. Note that numsoups includes quite a lot of G1, and methuselah_52k is in the list despite being asymmetric only.

Code: Select all

Suggest to put 34P7 on pentadecathlon:

Code: Select all

x = 11, y = 23, rule = B3/S23

in 34P7#LCM_oscillators.

i'm thinking of adding some info to the eater 4 page about a variation with higher clearance.

Code: Select all

x = 16, y = 16, rule = B3/S23
11b2ob2o$10bobobo$10bobobo$9b2o2bo$6bo4b2o$6b5o$4b2o4bo$5bo2b2o$5bobo
$3bobobo$b3ob2o$o3bo$3obo$3bo$3o$o!
would this be a good way to show the use of said variation, or are there better ways?

Code: Select all

x = 77, y = 27, rule = B3/S23

The wiki says that the p18 pi hassler is p21, although it is in the p18 section.

The “drifter version” of the Eater 3 is not on the wiki, despite it being mentioned in p71 honey farm hassler.

jslife redirects to Jason Summers, I suggest a disambig for Jason Summers and jslife-moving (the latter may need a page).
