The SMOS article should mention the rule used in the example (B34enw5q6ae7c/S2ac3-cknq4-aenqt5akqy8).
Done, somewhat pathetically.

Gun found in B378/S23, Gun article needs to be updated accordingly.

Code: Select all

x = 4, y = 3, rule = B3-q4z5y/S234k5j

Why not simply merge the wiki account and the forum account into a single ConwayLife account? I don't understand why that isn't the case already.
I am tentatively considering myself back.

because phpbb and mediawiki aren't exactly compatible and the mods are lazy

That's annoying but understandable. Thank you for explaining it to me.

Unmentioned R-predecessor

Post by MathAndCode » October 1st, 2020, 9:44 am

The R-pentomino's page states that the R-pentomino has three six-cell great-great-great-grandparents and has an image containing three such six-cell patterns. Here is a fourth that the image does not include.

Code: Select all

x = 6, y = 3, rule = B3/S23
4bo$4bo$3o2bo!
I am tentatively considering myself back.

not sure where else to suggest naming conventions

I propose the lake naming convention be a string of "L" and "R" prepended to -n-lake, with n = the number of dominoes (and the total number of Ls and Rs), with the name always starting with L.

for instance Lake 2 is "LLRLLRLLRLLR-12-lake"-- or at least that's its lexicographic first name.

This allows for multiple canonical names for most lakes unfortunately (the exception being the pond: LLLL-4-lake), but if someone wants to pick up this idea and find a way to have only one canonical name (perhaps with lexicographical ordering?) feel free.

EDIT:
lexicographical firstness doesn't seem like it would be that hard to do, so I think that should be the canon name; for instance

Code: Select all

x = 13, y = 13, rule = B3/S23
7b2o$6bo2bo$6bo2bo$4b2o4b2o$3bo8bo$3bo8bo$b2o7b2o$o8bo$o8bo$b2o4b2o$3b
o2bo$3bo2bo$4b2o!
is LLRLLRLRLLRLLRLR-16-lake, canonically:

Code: Select all

x = 75, y = 16, rule = LifeHistory
12.B3.B3.2D2.B3.B3.2D2.B3.2D2.B3.B3.2D2.B3.B3.2D2.B3.2D$12.B3.B3.2D2.
B3.B3.2D2.B3.2D2.B3.B3.2D2.B3.B3.2D2.B3.2D$12.3B.3B.D.D.3B.3B.D.D.3B.
D.D.3B.3B.D.D.3B.3B.D.D.3B.D.D$6.B2AB$6.A2.A$6.A2.A$3.B2AD2.D2AB$3.A
8.A$3.A8.A$B2AD5.D2AB$A8.A$A8.A$B2AD2.D2AB$3.A2.A$3.A2.A$3.B2AB!
EDIT: as per gooddogtyson's suggestion which is probably better:
maybe use lower case "l"s for one left turn and an upper case "L" for two?
to condense
I'll make double Ls the L and single Ls just l; and do likewise for R.

that would make the above lake LrLrlrLrLrlr (note: ordering is (L,l,r,R), with earlier preferred first)

EDIT: there are of course triple Ls for still lives such as the bipond:

Code: Select all

x = 7, y = 7, rule = LifeHistory
B2AB$A2.A$A2.A$B2AD2AB$3.A2.A$3.A2.A$3.B2AB!
Which makes its canon name the LlrLlr-8-Lake

Similarly:

Code: Select all

x = 10, y = 7, rule = LifeHistory
3.B2AB$3.A2.A$3.A2.A$B2AD2AD2AB$A2.A2.A2.A$A2.A2.A2.A$B2AB2.B2AB!
this is the LlrLrLlR-12-Lake I think

For Sawmill, the 3 components are in the post that introduced the pattern, and the smallest pattern using all 3 components, which grows at t log*(t), is as follows:

Is there any open access to Martin Gardner's Scientific American October 1970 and February 1971 columns that we can include in LifeWiki like Lifeline issues? It may help dating some discoveries.

Here's the October issue: http://www.ibiblio.org/lifepatterns/october1970.html

Thanks, but the pattern images are missing. And how about the latter issue (and, possibly, the reader responses?)

Not sure about the technical legality of this PDF file, but all three articles appear to be available in a black-and-white scan of the relevant article-compilation book, here.

I don't think it's completely broken, at least not last time I checked, but this is a known issue after the update to MediaWiki 1.33. See this thread.

EDIT: wow, good job phpBB with putting the period on its own line

In an edition to Merzenich's p64, index.php?title=Merzenich%27s_p64&diff=prev&oldid=74150, the discovery got a reference from jslife-moving pattern collection, which seems odd for me. Shouldn't it be the relevant page in osc-supplement?
And also, where can I cite for the discovery of p11 double-length signal injector and p48 pi hassler? I can't find the corresponding post by Sokwe from June 2011.

Yep, that was a simple error on my part which has now been fixed. Thanks.

Because symmetric scorpion (xs16_69bob96) and cis-loaf with tail (xs11_178kic) have a practically equal number of occurrences, I think the articles for these objects should say "It is uncertain whether this still life will place 85th or 86th."
B2n3-jn/S1c23-y is an interesting rule. It has a replicator, a fake glider, an OMOS and SMOS, a wide variety of oscillators, and some signals. Also this rule is omniperiodic.

How about "about as common as qqc"? "It is uncertain" sounds like apgsearch and Catagolue are confirmed to end when in fact they can continue indefinitely, or until Hatsya Limited goes bankrupt and a few more decades.

That's not what I meant by "it is uncertain". It is meant to mean that the two still lives are too close in number of occurences to tell.

Symmetric scorpion: 146,570,777
Cis-loaf with tail: 146,570,770

"It is uncertain" carries a connotation of it becoming certain sometime in the future, and that isn't going to happen.

A user named Donald Trump keeps asking about LangtonsAnt and JvN rules.
Could you add them to the wiki?

The numbers in LifeWiki's Catagolue page are very outdated. I can't edit it because I am not a trusted user.
