No RLE/Plaintext file for the 90-degree reactions? (clicking returns a Not Found message)
Yup, thanks for the reminder. Here's how things currently work:

If you see a LifeViewer animation of a pattern, or a LifeViewer frame in general, then the way to get the pattern is by clicking to launch LifeViewer, then hit R if it's an animation and you want to get the first frame -- and then Ctrl+C will put the pattern in your clipboard.

These RLEs can be added by anyone, in the RLE namespace, as an article called RLE:{pname}. LifeViewer knows to look there, so then those RLEs can be used in embedded viewers in other articles.

However, there's also a "LifeWiki pattern collection" that can be downloaded as a ZIP file. Generally we want every pattern that's showcased in the main namespace to also show up in the pattern collection, just on general principles. Those direct "RLE" and "plaintext" links point to those pattern-collection files.

However, getting those files there means uploading them to the LifeWiki server, and for security reasons only a few people have permission to do that. Generating files with good comments and uploading them manually is one of the most time-consuming never-ending tasks on LifeWiki -- so the current system involves doing them in batches.

Next time someone runs the auto-upload script -- which doesn't happen _too_ often because it involves scanning every main-namespace LifeWiki article looking for new stuff -- any RLE-namespace files that aren't represented on the server will be created (with standardized comments) and uploaded semi-automatically. I'll kick off an auto-upload run now, while I'm thinking of it. Thanks again!

I'm a bit hesitant to add these because they're not quite the same version of the initial pattern and I'm not sure what exactly counts as a synthesis of the "same" methuselah. For example, at what point do we draw the line between "a die hard variant" and "a random pattern that happens to vanish into nothing"? Can someone who's been around on the wiki longer than I have give advice on what the convention is surrounding this?

The smallest and most well-known methuselah is the R-pentomino,
But this one is even smaller (if you consider the bounding box).

Just to clarify the notion of greyship (as mentioned in the spaceship main article):

A greyship in the sense I meant it is not a single spaceship, but rather a grammar of combinable components to build arbitrarily large ships of maximum average density.

It is a long outstanding conjecture that the maximum average density of every agar is at most 1/2. This is only proven for p1 agars, strictly speaking, but no counter example showed up so far. So greyships have density 1/2 and thus look great when looked at from a distance.

The notion is also about building flexible shapes. Ideally the grammar allows you to build flexible macro shapes.

The greyships easiest to construct are using the stripes agar, even that is a challenge for periods above 4. A greyship based on the Venetian blinds agar would be on the opposite side of the spectrum. Alas, I never managed to construct one.

So the notion is not as arbitrary as you might suspect originally, although admittedly special interest.

Pretty sure that pattern is unnamed, and that "Bulldozer" is a proposed name, which is why it's an unnamed pattern.

I think the LifeWiki RLE file for Sir Robin (https://www.conwaylife.com/patterns/sirrobin.rle) is wrong. Specifically, it's missing two '$$'s indicating the two empty lines.

The correct code can be found here: https://gist.github.com/carlcorder/84d6 ... 4ff5795717

Can someone confirm? Is this a problem with more RLE files on the site? Or did I write my RLE compiler wrong and/or miss something? I'm pretty new to this.

1. Rle needs x,y and rule.
So it’s x=100,y=200,rule=B3/S23(example
2. 2$ =$$
And 2$ is easier to understand.
Your code:

Ah weird! The person who put this on Gist must have made the exact same error I did in my compiler and added the extra $ to cover it.

Sorry to inconvenience you!

That's crazy though; this isn't my code.. What would be the chances that an error of mine was hidden by a complimentary error from a random stranger? Oh well :?

@dvgrn @Ian07
1. Could you please review my sketch for an Lx73 article? index.php?oldid=73308
2. Do you have plans for embedding a LifeViewer into Template:Rule?

Looks very good to me!

Oops, I haven't gotten around to experimenting with that yet, have I? Adding a RANDOMIZE sample with LifeViewer and so on. I'm probably avoiding it. I'm scared to death of LifeWiki templates, so if they don't bother me I try not to bother them.

I'll put it back near the top of my to-do list, but will also cross my fingers and hope that somebody else gets to it before I do.

For Checkerboard dual, I made a conversion table for birth transitions on an initially dead square (white) in this post, with an explanation of how it works. It could be adapted into a table at LifeWiki, somehow.

Code: Select all

x = 4, y = 3, rule = B3-q4z5y/S234k5j
2b2o$b2o$2o!

The SMOS article should mention the rule used in the example (B34enw5q6ae7c/S2ac3-cknq4-aenqt5akqy8).

Code: Select all

x = 4, y = 3, rule = B3-q4z5y/S234k5j
2b2o$b2o$2o!
