What is a reasonable alternative to using explicit linebreaks in wiki formatting? Explicit linebreaks are a problem since readers use devices with different screen sizes. My first impulse is to just remove explicit linebreaks when I see them, but are there better solutions?
Here is what I mean (from the current version of "Null reaction"):

1. I think a better practice would be to have the caption no wider than the viewer width.confocaloid wrote: ↑June 12th, 2022, 7:30 pmWhat is a reasonable alternative to using explicit linebreaks in wiki formatting? 2. Without breaks, the opposite problem occurs in wider screens, namely, excessively wide viewer captions.
Not sure simply removing the breaks is a good idea,

Re: Suggested LifeWiki edits
The effect of manually inserted linebreaks is that it looks bad for almost everyone (I have attached a picture in my post above), except for those with the same screen width.
I like more the old version (without manually inserted linebreaks). I think it looks mostly good for sufficiently many readers. For comparison, here is how the old version looks like on my screen (with two different widths of the browser window):

To break or not to break? You make good points. Let me add one other thought. Where it fits the article, I prefer to move most text out of long captions and into body text.

It appears that many pages about strict still lifes and induction coils are not notable. Examples include:
There are many more of these short, potentially non-notable pages, so if you think they really aren't notable, make sure you check the "Strict still lifes" and "Induction coils" categories for similarly-structured pages.

The list of 180-degree collisions on 2-glider_collision doesn't seem to match ColorfulGalaxy's stamp collection. It seems that either of them must have a mistake.
Re: Suggested LifeWiki edits
All strict still lifes with 12 or fewer cells have pages. They mostly look the same, but I tried to add information such as "only 12-cell within a 7×3 box", "most common that works in B35/S23", "X times rarer than related 11-cell", "most common 12-ecll unsynthesizable in 4 gliders", etc. on the ones where it applied. I agree about the others except bookend siamese table, where I am borderline.carsoncheng wrote: ↑June 20th, 2022, 2:32 amIt appears that many pages about strict still lifes and induction coils are not notable. Are redirects with typos useful/appropriate? Should something be done with these? Two recent examples are Suprise and Polymino.

I think we can safely let Atavoidirc know that it's not a good idea to try to anticipate every possible way that somebody could misspell something. The misspellings will end up showing up on too many LifeWiki lists, and on balance they'll just confuse things rather than being helpful.confocaloid wrote: ↑June 27th, 2022, 2:08 amAre redirects with typos useful/appropriate? Redirects like that really need to be restricted to valid alternate spellings of things (which are relatively rare).

Re: Suggested LifeWiki edits
Five suggested edits for the glider syntheses tutorial for LifeWiki:
- We do not need a Python script for an RLE-to-apgcode anymore in the "Using Catagolue to find syntheses" section. Instead, we can use catagolue.hatsya.com/object to direct you to the object page.
- We should complete the "popseq" section of the tutorial, which has been abandoned since September 2021.
- findpreds.py is not in the Shinjuku repository anymore. Perhaps add the most up-to-date version of the program back to Shinjuku, or link the latest version posted in the Shinjuku repository archive on GitLab.
- The octo3obj database should be included in the "find-octohash-Python3.py" section.
- inside 12x12 inside a 12x12 bounding box
Re: Suggested LifeWiki edits
I've made most of these changes. The 'find-preds.py' -> 'synthtools.py pred()' update is still a work in progress, since I personally can't seem to make a pred() call work in any even vaguely convenient way. I could probably make it work by rewriting pred() -- maybe calling it "find-pred.py" while I'm at it! -- but it doesn't seem to make sense to put all that annoying dependency-wrestling into the tutorial.carsoncheng wrote: ↑June 29th, 2022, 5:10 amFive suggested edits for the glider syntheses tutorial for LifeWiki:

This is a working version of the new findpreds.py, where most of the code is directly taken from Shinjuku, crossposted from Discord:
To use it, we just need to install lifelib if necessary, run the program, and paste the apgcode of the object you want to search in the input box that appears at the beginning of the program's execution. It has the additional features of shuffling the soup list and not losing your search results after you terminate a search early.
Code: Select all

import sys, os, lifelib, ssl, random

Re: Suggested LifeWiki edits
In the "popseq" section of Tutorials/Glider syntheses, it is mentioned that:
However, this statement doesn't mention popseq.c, which should be compatible with different databases as well. Attempting to do these modifications by yourself is likely very inconvenient to people who are not familiar with LifeAPI. If you know how to do it, would you mind adding the link of the relevant forum post to the tutorial, or posting the details in threads related to popseq.c, and link your post to this tutorial?popseq.py was designed to operate on whatever set of gencols collision results you want it to search, so you might set up the script to use a database of 2-glider, 3-glider, or 4-glider collisions, or whatever custom collision set you might want to search. Setup details can be found in the above links.

Re: Suggested LifeWiki edits
In the news item for the completion of the 14-in-9 project on July 15, the pattern naming, where the still life is named "snake-bridge-snake", is quite misleading. Snake bridge snake is xs12_ck3123z11, but the still life mentioned is xs14_dbgzw1qm. Since this pattern is unnamed, I guess it will be better for the apgcode of the object to be directly mentioned on the news item, and link the apgcode to the Catagolue page of the object.
Re: Suggested LifeWiki edits
On Electric fence the pattern file links below the viewer in the middle of the page are broken. I tried to fix it by changing the pattern name to 'electricfence' instead of 'electricfences', but in the preview it showed that this broke the viewer. Can someone fix it?
Re: Suggested LifeWiki edits
Newly added RLEs are swept into the wiki database from time to time by a manual admin process. Thus the seemingly broken link. You can still get the RLE from the viewer using ctrl-c.Macbi wrote: ↑July 17th, 2022, 9:31 amOn Electric fence the pattern file links below the viewer in the middle of the page are broken.
