Incorporating Lifeviewer in CAPTCHA

Post by GUYTU6J » September 1st, 2019, 1:18 pm

I feel the urge to change our CAPTCHA process in new user's registration to the forums. Now I have an idea that something along these lines may be more effective than the old question "What is the name of the smallest spaceship in Conway's Game of Life?"
1. portrait a L-tetromino with Lifeviewer.
2.tell the user to change to edit state. One click is required.
3. tell the user to change one of the cell's state so that it becomes the smallest spaceship in CGoL. One more click is required.
4. tell the user to run the pattern by clicking on the play button.
5. check if the pattern works.

[Idea for how to make the user make a glider]
Then it can ask the question:
"what is this called?"
Glider

Do admins have the right to delete spam user accounts?
This post from the Famous Quotes thread points to an account that does not exist now.

If there's indeed the power, can I have my foe list cleaned up, where 100+ spam accounts are listed?

I suspect Nathaniel could do this somehow, but it may not be particularly easy. It might require some non-trivial and error-prone fiddling with the database, and banned spam users might not be worth the risk of damaging the database. The way things are now, if someone gets banned erroneously, it's easy to undo the mistake.

Mere moderators, as far as I can tell, can only ban spammers and delete or move messages, not much else -- e.g., can't reset passwords, edit users' sig lines, or delete users.

I can delete spam users, but won't do so unless it's 100% clear that they're spam users (so I won't do so without looking into them myself). As dvgrn mentioned, this is completely irreversible.

For example, I won't delete 2thumbsup unless there is something blatant that I missed. They only have 1 post, and that post doesn't include any links, nor does their signature. They have a website associated with their account, but I won't delete them just based on that.

Anyway, I've started deleting some of the more blatant ones from your list.

Thanks! There're also candidates mentioned in the former thread "Massive spam attacks on the wiki (and forums?)". They might get spam posts removed and id banned, but the accounts were left. So these have proofs (other user's statements) that they are spambots, summarized from the thread:
Hiarech246 (user 1939)
Shipet256 (user 1940)
Setfree244 (user 1944)
Retro244 (user 1945)
Jasinswift (user 1963)
stephany (user 2127)

Yup. Generally speaking, using a post to report a spammer by linking to the spam page just makes another kind of spam-like clutter. The spammer's message will vanish fairly quickly, leaving a link that can't be followed.

Linking to Toderk's user page is maybe somewhat more useful, but in general even that isn't worth making a post about. Better to collect a long list of spam users, and deal with them all at once.

And a good way to make a spambot list is to add them to your foe list. In User Control Panel → Friends & Foes → Manage foes, view the source of webpage and you can grab both the user name and id. That's how I made the aforementioned list. It can be reported, say, quarterly, so that it's long enough.
BTW johnlernert(2359), ironmathyu5(2358), thorcaption5(2361) and warmachine2(2362) are newly found spambots with links in signature.

An idea:
Give the user a random soup.
Let him/her tell you what’s inside.
To make this a bit more easier,
Place a list there.
For example
block:_say 11
blinker:_say 6
glider:_say 3
boat:_say 1
ship:_say 2
loaf:_say 0
toad:_say 1
...
To make sure this would work well,(don’t show a 49768M that’s too big, or a soup with something unusual like

Code: Select all

 x = 16, y = 16, rule = B3/S23
booobobbbboboobo$
bbbobobbbobobbbb$
ooobooobobbooooo$
bbooobbobbobbooo$
oooooooboobbboob$
obooobbbobboobbb$
boboobobbbooobbb$
bobbbboobobooboo$
boooobobobbobobo$
bbbbooboooobbooo$
bobobbboobobobbb$
bbbobbbobobooooo$
ooooobooobbobbbo$
obbbbboobbobboob$
boboooboobobbobb$
boobbbobbooboooo!
,or a die hard,)
Choose 100 soup that have all these things.
And let the user enter a lucky number( u can do sth here, and I suggest: a prime number, 10-120, so u have 28 choices)
And show the soup.
Not as easy as

Code: Select all

What is the name of the smallest spaceship in Conway's Game of Life (it is 6 letters long and starts with "g")?:
This question is a means of preventing automated form submissions by spambots.
16*16 soup work well.

Code: Select all

 x = 16, y = 16, rule = B3/S23
obbbobbbooobbobo$
bobbboobbboobbbo$
boooobobbbbbbooo$
ooobobbbboobboob$
oooobboooboobooo$
oboboboooobooboo$
oobbbbobobooobbb$
obbbboobbooboooo$
bbbooobobbbobbob$
booobbobbbobbooo$
bobbbooobobboobo$
oobbobbobobobbbb$
bbobooooboobbboo$
bboobbboobbbbooo$
oboooobbbooooobo$
bbbbbooboooobbob!
Oh should we have a limit like if you didn’t post in a year, you’ll be out of this?
Rule modifier
