Why is S/N ratio approximate?
With this appearing under the category "website-related questions", I guess that is because there is no commonly accepted well-defined way of measurement. Everyone seems to use their own definitions of signals, noises and ratios. This is unfortunate in general (because there should be a common language for people to be able to understand each other and collect the knowledge in a form that has some chance of remaining useful to others as time goes), but ultimately inconsequential in this particular case (because being able to calculate an exact value for S/N ratio would be of little help in practice).

i thought S/N was referring to (still lifes with N cells)/(still lifes with N-1 cells).

Why is calculating exact S/N ratio useless in practice?

Useless, because knowing it will not solve anything.

In future, people would calculate exact SN ratio.

I have a matter with this post :viewtopic.php?f=2&t=576&p=180523#p180369

I have edited it to correct Fx199 into Fx119 and added a post-scriptum "Edit2".
I submit my modified message but I don't see the post-scriptum !
The correction is well done above the pattern I share in this post.

When I try to re-edit my post, the post-scriptum "Edit2" is there !

Edit : In order to try again :)
Do you see the "Edit2" at the end of my post ?

Edit2: It works fine here...

Scroll down and have a look in the bottom of your code block. There's a little problem with the closing code tag, which means the whole rest of the post is getting treated as code.

I suggest to protect the page LifeWiki:Tiki bar, since it is no longer used (replaced by a dedicated subforum).

I can't find an appropriate thread for posting this, but since i joined, the Special:Statistics page always says there are 12 active users, despite the Special:ActiveUsers page listing nearly 30 active users. Can someone fix this?
That problem still holds, but nobody seems to have noticed that post, and i really can't find an appropriate thread for this, so i'm reposting this here.

"b" stands for "blank", and "o" is a circle from when dot matrix displays used circles for each pixel rather than squares going all the way to the corner.

I don't know any more than what public phpBB documentation says.

There might be some database leftovers from deleted posts that Nathaniel can see and I can't, for example. But for what it's worth, when someone deletes a post, there's an entry in the moderator logs that says the post was deleted, and there's still a link in that entry that says "view post" -- but when I click on it, it just tells me that it doesn't exist. Surprise, surprise. Maybe with some "soft delete" setting it would still show the post (?) but it looks like hard deletes are what happens around here.

Without losing any search results? I don't recall if hitting "q" still stops a search at the end of the next haul.

Ctrl+C should kill the job immediately, but any search results recorded so far will be lost.

I've done some hauls now. It says it's contacted Catagolue and deposited the hauls, but I can't see them. I think they need to be verified by someone.

Is my assumption correct? If so, how do I get them verified and how long will it take?

You did not say what was the CA rule and what was the census. Open the census page, only with "/census/" replaced by "/haul/" in the URL, like this:

Code: Select all

https://catagolue.hatsya.com/haul/b3s23/C1
https://catagolue.hatsya.com/haul/b3s23/C1
You can check whether your hauls are visible there.

Depends on whether you are using multithreading ("-p").

If you see messages "N soups completed" where N is a "random-looking" integer (not a multiple of 100000), then try hitting the key "q" in the console window and waiting. Apgsearch should submit the haul and exit.

Otherwise, if you see messages "N soups completed" where N is always a multiple of 100000, it is likely that you are using multiple threads. Then likely Ctrl+C will submit the haul and exit.

They are! Thanks. I am doing b3s23c1.

Also, when prompted to say how many CPU threads I wanted (i'm on the precompiled version) I answered 1, but the progress updates are round numbers.

(Edit: my payosha key is displayed as "d/dx", but my key's haul redirects to "d". I think I know why, but that's funny, and I should probably change it.)

You can always press first "q" first, and see if that works. If the program does not react to that, then try "Ctrl+C".

That page is old. E.g. there are Perl scripts listed. If you copy some RLE in a clipboard and select "File -> Run Clipboard" in Golly, then the program shows a message "Sorry, but Perl scripting is no longer supported."
Should it be updated?

Code: Select all

x = 5, y = 3, rule = B3/S23
obobo$2ob2o$obobo!

Code: Select all

x = 5, y = 4, rule = B35/S234i8
