Quick follow-up to the previous post:

Among guns above 100x100, there's a very sudden and suspicious drop-off in density after guntrue_3359; guntrue_2213 is the first gun below a density of 0.1, and it's not overdensified, whereas guntrue_3359 is.

I suspect the top of this list is going to be a big proportion of the remaining problem. Maybe there will be some guns with a height or width below 100 that I've incorrectly filtered out, though.

The next interesting code snippet that AI could write for someone in a few minutes, would be a Golly script that takes this list

I've already written such a script at least for dedensifying a single gun, although it uses LifeLib rather than Golly. It shouldn't be hard to write a shell script to batch-run the list. I recommend running it with the following options:

./stator_optimizer.py <filename> 10000 -d rotor 12 any -d stator 6 any -o area min_pop boundary_pop
where <filename> is the name of the .rle or .mc file containing the gun (in Life or LifeHistory format). This might very occasionally produce an unstable result, in which case the '10' should be increased to '11' or '12'. If the output is a stable gun, then it will have the minimum possible stator population for that bounding box. On the overdensified guntrue_3253 it completes in under 3 minutes on my craptop, so it should be possible to batch-run the entire list in a not too unreasonable length of time.

Sounds good! For the record, I've looked at all of the remaining guns with period above 999 and density over 0.1 -- i.e., the ones that were smaller than 100 cells in at least one dimension, so I had filtered them out of the previous list. None of them were over-densified. So I think that unless I somehow missed something, the above list might be complete.

It might be interesting to run the script against the entire gun collection at some point, just to see if it picks up any more optimizations, but it probably won't find very much once this list is processed.

I think it would be better to use the standard 31.4 when it can reduce the bounding diamond solely for that reason. Otherwise, might it be possible to randomize which version of 31.4 is used as a showcase of their interchangeability?

Also note syringe can be reduced with snake or aircraft carrier in certain cases as well. And if randomization of the 31.4 catalyst is on the table, randomizing snake-aircraft carrier ends to both syringes and Tremi-snarks may also be an option.
Currently working to improve Life's guns and work on updating SKOPs and Isotropic rules most similar to B3/S23 to Life standards. Will get software to begin searches eventually.
