Spurious rule name errors

Post by Tropylium » September 27th, 2014, 6:46 pm

Golly 2.7b complains about "rule name not matching" if a preset rule name is typed in the Set Rule window with the wrong capitalization. The rule otherwise loads fine, though.

This isn't a bug -- Golly is warning you of a potential problem. If you proceed to save/copy patterns with the rule set to "lifehistory" and publish them in this forum then people who use a case-sensitive file system (eg. Linux) won't be able to load them into Golly because it will look for lifehistory.rule but the actual filename is LifeHistory.rule.

BTW, typing such a rule into the Set Rule dialog is the slow way to do things. If you set up your Golly folder as recommended at the end of Help > Hints and Tips then you can switch rules with a couple of clicks in the left panel that shows *all* patterns, rules, scripts, etc.

EDIT: Hmm, that warning message could be improved though. It should really show the correct capitalization (ie. LifeHistory in this case), or even better, not even show the warning but automatically correct what you typed. I'll look at doing the latter if it's not too hard.
