If you open a LifeHistory pattern, and draw in state-3 over state-2 cells, and then udo, the cells should revert to state-3, but instead they become state-4.
The same thing also happens when drawing state 4 cells over state 2 cells or state 5 cells over state 2 cells. After drawing state 6 cells over state 2 cells, pressing the undo button does nothing.
Also, trying to change state 3 or state 5 cells to state 2 cells instead changes them to state 4 cells, and trying to change state 4 or state 6 cells to state 2 cells does nothing.
I am tentatively considering myself back.

These issues should be fixed now. Thanks for reporting!

Go to the pattern here, run it for a while so that the boundaries show up, go back to generation zero, cut the entire pattern, then paste it so that the leftmost cell of the leftmost tub is on the second column from the left (i.e. there is only one blank column separating the leftmost tub from the left edge). The cell in between should show up as on, and I wasn't able to turn it off besides deleting the leftmost cell of the tub.
I am tentatively considering myself back.

It's actually a display bug. LifeViewer is erroneously displaying an extra row of cells at the top, and an extra column of cells at the left, at the extent of the grid. They don't actually exist and are rendered as a duplicate of the row below, and column to the right, respectively. I'll fix it at some stage.

Thanks for reporting!

Cursor offset with certain rules with more than two states

Post by MathAndCode » June 1st, 2021, 8:00 pm

For the past few weeks, when I try to use certain rules with more than two states (The rules for which I have experienced this bug are DoubleB3S23, QuadLife, and Immigration.), the cursor and selection windows are offset from the actual pattern. However, this does not occur with Brian's Brain (a Generations rule). I have attached a (trimmed (in order so that I could attach it)) screen recording of my demonstrating the bug with DoubleB3S23.

Thanks for the report. Please let me know the following:
  1. Which browser are you using on which device?
  2. Does it only happen when loading RuleTree/RuleTable rules?
  3. Please let me know the values of the following fields for both a DoubleB3S23 pattern and a Generations pattern
    • Help->Info->Display->Size
    • Help->Info->Display->Scale
    • Help->Info->Display->Pixel Ratio
    • Help->Info->Display->Window Zoom

  1. I'm using Firefox on a MacBook Air.
  2. That's how it's been so far.
  3. For DoubleB3S23, it's:
    • 560 x 720
    • 1.00
    • 1.00
    • 1.00
    It's the same for Brian's Brain.

Does it work on Safari?

I get the same bug in DoubleB3S23 in Safari as I do with Firefox: The selection window and cursor are vertically offset, the offset of the selection window increases both in terms of the number of cells and the number of pixels as I zoom out, and the offset of the cursor increases in terms of the number of cells (and possibly in terms of the number of pixels as well, but it's hard to tell) as I zoom out. I took the initiative of trying DoubleB3S23 on Google Chrome, and I got the same problem there as well.
I am tentatively considering myself back.

Are you using a Scaled resolution for the Display?

Go to Tutorials/Catalyses#Fishhook_replacements, scroll to the end of the section (just above the heading for the block replacements section), go to the right side of the pattern, go to generation 4, then select this region:

Code: Select all

x = 4, y = 7, rule = EV2QuadColor
2.D$.D.D$D2.D$D$D$D$D!
Pressing "clear cells outside selection" then playing will cause some cells outside the selection to flicker in and out of existence.

Note to self: I should change the guide to this when that example no longer needs to be kept the same:

Code: Select all

x = 2197, y = 81, rule = EV2QuadColor

Go to Tutorials/Catalyses#Fishhook_replacements, scroll to the end of the section (just above the heading for the block replacements section), go to the right side of the pattern, go to generation 4, then select this region:

Code: Select all

x = 4, y = 7, rule = EV2QuadColor
2.D$.D.D$D2.D$D$D$D$D!
Pressing "clear cells outside selection" then playing will cause some cells outside the selection to flicker in and out of existence.
Fixed, thanks for reporting!

Run the following pattern to generation 37 using the play function. (Initially overshooting, initially undershooting, and getting to exactly generation3 7 on the first try each works.)

Code: Select all

x = 26, y = 10, rule = Symbiosis
23.A$24.BA$11.B12.B$9.3B11.2B$9.B.B13.A$9.B3$2B$2B!
Then remove the state-one cells and the state-two cell at the top of the beehive predecessor (Using the draw tool and making selections around them then deleting the cells inside the selection each works.) so that the window shows this:

Code: Select all

x = 25, y = 12, rule = Symbiosis
5.3B$5.B$6.B17.B$23.2B2$20.3B$17.B2.B2.B$18.B4.B$2B14.B.B2.B.B$2B14.2B
3.2B$11.2B$11.2B!
The resulting preblock in the top-right should turn into a block via B3a for generation 38 (although the Herschel will start interacting with it from another side), but this 3a birth does not happen for generation 38. However, it does happen for generation 39, causing generation 39 to look like this:

Code: Select all

x = 25, y = 13, rule = Symbiosis
5.2B$5.B.B$5.B$23.2B$24.B$20.B3.B$19.B$18.B4.2B$17.2B4.2B$2B14.B.4B.2B
$2B14.2B3.2B$11.2B$11.2B!
For reference, generation 39 should look like this:

Code: Select all

x = 25, y = 13, rule = Symbiosis
5.2B$5.B.B$5.B$23.2B2$20.B3.B$19.B$18.B4.2B$17.2B4.2B$2B14.B.4B.2B$2B
14.2B3.2B$11.2B$11.2B!
I am tentatively considering myself back.

I'm getting the same bug on LifeViewer in LifeWiki after doing a certain thing. Log into LifeWiki, go to Tutorials/Catalyses#Fishhook_replacements, click the edit section link next to "Fishhook replacements", scroll to the bottom of the section, remove the text "[[ THUMBNAIL THUMBSIZE 2 WIDTH 1200 HEIGHT 400 ]]" from the last (non-blank) line of the section, click the button that says "Show preview", (Actually saving the changes would probably also work, but I don't want to mess the page up for other people.), then scroll to the last LifeViewer window in the preview. Drawing is offset from the cursor, the selection window is offset from the gridlines, and nudging selections moves a region of cells whose position is inconsistent with the selection window. Also, zooming in and out does not seem to be centered around the cursor when the cursor is near the bottom of the window.
I am tentatively considering myself back.

First try after drawing new pattern: Glider killed normally.
Second try: Glider passed through the wall.
Note: The wall must not be pre-existing in the RLE code. It must be newly drawn.

Also, if you directly delete the wall cells using the draw tool, then the glider would get killed again upon second try.

Code: Select all

x = 7, y = 8, rule = LifeHistory
7F$F5.F$F5.F$F5.F$F3A2.F$F2.A2.F$F.A3.F$7F!
EDIT: The pre-block oscillates at period 2

Code: Select all

x = 21, y = 21, rule = LifeColorful
11.E$10.3E$10.E.2E$13.E4$2.2B$.2B$2B$.2B15.2D$19.2D$18.2D$17.2D4$7.C$
7.2C.C$8.3C$9.C!
I have reduced the glider cost of quadratic growth to eight and probably to seven. Looking for conduits...

I remember running a huge spacefiller pattern on my phone, when the page decided to refresh itself. I cannot remember what the spacefiller was.
