So far I didn't find any way to destroy that oscillator, once it is constructed.
It's still a kugelblitz even if it happens to be completely indestructible. But it would be interesting to have an example of a destructible kugelblitz. For example any single photon is safely absorbed, but a pair of photons can destroy the object.

All it took was adding one line to the ruletable:

Time to name the e9jp

Post by d/dx » September 15th, 2024, 3:19 pm

[Nathan merged this into the "Create your own terminology" thread.]

It's time to find a proposed name for the e9jp.

Several people have already proposed "A" for the object abbreviation, but I think we should find an official name for it.

I think, since its lifespan is 1348 gens, we should call it the "Millenium" akin to the Century. And I also think its canonical orientation should be the one in which it appears in Catagolue, which is this:

Code: Select all

x = 4, y = 5, rule = B3/S23
b3o$obo$o$2obo$2b2o!

Definitely not A. It doesn't deserve a one-letter name.

Millennium could work, but I wouldn't want it misspelled the way you have it in the OP, even if other objects have had their names come from typos. That said, I would prefer that name to be used for one that's much closer to 1000 generations.

As hotdogPi wrote, this object doesn't really need a one-letter name.

As I myself previously wrote on this topic,
confocaloid wrote:

(Also, I cannot find support for the claim "[...] Several people have already proposed [...]". So far I know of only one person who at some point suggested that particular name.)

I myself refer to this object as "JJ", for its appearance in the Jubjub reflector.

I definitely disagree with the proposed orientation, it looks awkward and arbitrary (considering what existing connections are known with this intermediate).
I think the following orientation should be the canonical one, so that the relevant part of Speed tunnel becomes an "JJF42H" conduit:

Code: Select all

x = 29, y = 19, rule = B3/S23

Also, this "extremely important" thread should be merged into Create your own terminology. This topic doesn't need a separate thread.

I personally refer to this as “A”, because the active region looks somewhat like A. Many other letters are used up for less useful conduit objects (Anyone know of an elementary dove duplicator?). But this is an object with serious engineering potential. Never mind that it is rare, what matters is that many conduits can create this - and use this too.

Simply put, for such a revolutionary object that is in Speed tunnel (lowest RT G-H), Jubjub reflector (Smallest 180 deg single-lane reflector), several conduits (F114, F149) and a High-clearance G-to-Block factory, why not a single-letter name? It does MORE than 2-glider octomino (O), dove (D) and block-tie (J) combined.

Millennium is a nice name for the object. So Millennium for the actual name, and A for abbreviation in conduits.

As for why not A, maybe consider that you humans are biased for/against the first of anything - this is why there is no “1” in crime scenes.

Does anyone know anything about an elementary "Jubjub active region" duplicator, then? What is different about JJ vs. dove w.r.t. that point?

To me at least, "A for Millennium" does not feel like a particularly intuitive and/or self-explanatory choice. Compare "A for all".

(Also, "Millennium" does not feel like a particularly good name for the intermediate in the Speed tunnel, either. The actual lifespan is far away from 1000, and the usefulness of this particular object is not in it being long-lived.)

If you really want to use up the letter 'A' as soon as possible (for whatever reason), then I'd rather assign A to the angel. (So, a certain subset of blinker factories would be considered X-to-A converters.)
Alternatively, wait until some other object with name actually beginning with 'A' is shown to be useful enough to deserve that letter.

Looks like confocaloid and I both agree with hotdogPi's long-standing opinion that e9jp has no particular need of a one-letter abbreviation.

Let's just go with confocaloid's two-letter "JJ", and confocaloid's suggested orientation from the speed tunnel -- eh? Then we can get the confusing question marks out of the Speed tunnel article.

It would have been nice if the "e9jp" orientation had happened to be a reasonable orientation. But if we let the arbitrary lexicographical ordering of apgcodes make decisions for us, we'd have some really really weird orientation conventions for B, R, H, and so on. Seems like the "cb16e" orientation is a definite winner on the reasonableness metric.

Ashbird: Sort of a generalized phoenix; an ashbird of order N is a pattern where no cell survives more than N generations after being born.
my favorite rules:
B2-a3i/S2-a34
B134/S3V
B13/S02V|B3/S03V

Beehive

vertical = Hive

horizontal = Egg

This goes back to the Queen Bee who lays a horizontal Egg.

Only the vertical Beehive actually looks like a Beehive,

hence Hive. The horizontal Beehive really looks like

AN EGG

besides, a lot of Patterns "lay an egg"

so we are missing out on a lot of

exquisite CGoL humor here

Why use two different names for different orientations of the same object, considering that the evolution rules of Conway's Life apply in the same way, regardless of the orientation?

Further, the word "egg" is already used for something else.

this is why it never "caught on"

but I still maintain the Queen Bee lays Egg

not hive

but hey, "cis" and "trans" are used

she could lay enough eggs to populate a hive

if they didn't all get eaten first...

your "line of three egg" is a Blinker

That's just an example shown in the page.

Even for this specific example, it doesn't seem quite right to describe the three-bit "egg" as a "blinker", because it is not really a separate object:

Code: Select all

x = 8, y = 4, rule = B3/S23
b2o$2ob5o$b7o$2b5o!
A three-bit "non-spark" appears in the generation T = 1, only to interact again in the tick from T = 2 to T = 3. There's almost no time for it to exist as a separate object, let alone as a blinker.

This "HeavyWeight" SpaceShip is a PseudoObject

is a lot like my "KingBee", another PseudoObject :

they both produce Blinkers !

( the Blinker survives, in the case of the KingBee; in the case of the QueenBee

her second Egg survives but her first Egg kills her... )
