Crazy Life-like Rules I Found

Post by iconmaster » July 3rd, 2009, 5:26 pm

DotLife - 023/3

This rule is almost exactly like Life, but with single dots being able to survive. Most guns and similar thing don't work in this rule. Oddly, this rule will act like an exploding rule when using soup.

EightLife - 238/3

Again, similar to Life, But pulsars and this 12-cell still live are more common than in LIfe:

I have made one very similar to yours and one very different from yours: B3/S2378 and B34678/S125. Pattern collection for second rule:

Another interesting rule with survival on 0 is B35/S024. I ran a census on it a while ago and turned up quite a few oscillators and a rare spaceship.

There are some more DotLife spaceships, including yours, here:

Artyom Dergachov has also discovered some patterns in this rule (2006):

For example, consider this 2c/5 puffer:

Code: Select all

x = 88, y = 15, rule = B3/S023

11boboo3bo$19b3o15boo6bo4b3obb3o4b6o16bobo$21bo40boobbo18bo!

He has a collection of patterns at:

http://www.cranemtn.com/life/files/b3s023_raw.zip

which includes a microscopic c/3 spaceship:

Code: Select all

and c/4 spaceship:

Code: Select all

Just want to let you know: these DotLife patterns will NOT :o :( work in regular Life. So, don't go HURRAH !

I did a "census" of near-Life rules recently. Generally, any rule with S0, S7 or B7 added will explode, though sometimes very slowly (B378/S23 is the slowest I think). B8 and S8 have no drastic general effect. (B5 and B6, while they wreck up a lot of patterns, interestingly do not suffice to turn a rule into exploding, unlike B7. It seems these simply make the pattern choke on overpopulation, whereas B7 rather adds a small but crucial boost to the birth rate around overpopulated zones that in regular Life would die off completely.)

An interesting difference in "flavor" in these rules is the behavior of B-heptominoes. In a few of these, such as B38/S023, the engine is stable and soups tend to develop long "arms" that continuously sprout new ones. In others, the engine fails even faster than in regular Life. In yet others, it will initially seem stable, but abort after a long while; DotLife is one of these rules. Possibly a stabilization exists — I know one does in at least B3/S0238. (Stabilization as a puffer, that is; I'm not talking about the small B-based spaceship that occurs naturally.)

I'd have to say the most interesting discovery was B38/S2378 however, where the pi heptomino turns out to be a replicator… :!:

There's this little (4,4)c/50 puffer in B35/S023:

Code: Select all

x = 13, y = 8, rule = B35/S023
3$7bo$5b2ob2o$bo3bo2bo$6b2o$2bo!
EDIT: And I found this 2c/6 orthogonal ship gliding through B356/S1267:

Code: Select all

x = 3, y = 4, rule = B356/S1267
o$obo$o$obo!
EDIT: Aaaand this blinker puffer in B356/S23:

Code: Select all

x = 17, y = 10, rule = B356/S23

EDIT: Aaaaaaand this c/2 orthogonal ship in B38/S023:

Code: Select all

x = 13, y = 6, rule = B38/S023
4b2o$2bo2bo$2o4bo5bo$o4bo6bo$o4bo5bo$bo2bo!
EDIT: Aaaaaaaaaaand this 8c/48 (read: c/6) diagonal ship that appeared naturally on B368/S238, which is a stabilization with a blinker of a diagonal replicator:

Code: Select all

x = 32, y = 9, rule = B368/S238
2b3o20b3o$bo2bo13b3o3bo2bo$o3bo18bo3bo$o2bo19bo2bo$3o3b3o14b3o3b3o$5bo
2bo19bo2bo$4bo3bo18bo3bo$4bo2bo19bo2bo$4b3o20b3o!
And this beautiful p20 oscillator, which is not relevant at all, but I like how it looks:

Code: Select all

x = 12, y = 12, rule = B368/S238
5b2o$3bo$5bo$bobobo2$ob2o7bo$o7b2obo2$6bobobo$6bo$8bo$5b2o!
