Question: Guns that can be pointed in a direction?

Sorry, I'm new to the community, so if this is an ignorant question, please forgive me. I did a google search but could not come up with anything.

Has anyone found a general gun that can be pointed in a direction (A generator/gun like Adam P. Goucher and Matthias Merzenich period-20/40 gun)? So like a generator that produces gliders, but the direction of the glider can be specified?

No, I think you've misinterpreted the question. I think what he means is a construction that, given a glider on one of four different input lanes, emit a glider from a single point in a direction depending on what lane the input glider came from.

No I meant, is there any other type of glider that can go in any direction, top, bottom, right, or left -- and does it have a gun where you can specify it's direction.

Maybe something like this:

any of the Period-59 glider guns can go horizontal or vertical, I guess that's the only way in Game of Life to direct the flow of something -- is it?

The proper name for what you're thinking about is diagonal spaceship; see here for a sampler. Indeed, there's now a gun for the crab, but as for turning these spaceships around… well that's a different story.

Where's the crab gun?

So gliders are the only spaceships that are easy enough, or at least studied enough, to be directed?

The Life rules are invariant under a group of symmetries equal to a semidirect product of Z^2 (the normal subgroup of translations) with D_8 (rotations and reflections). As such, if you have a gun producing spaceships in one direction, you can reflect and/or rotate it to produce identical spaceships travelling in another direction.

For example, the two loafer guns here produce loafers in different directions, and are identical up to an isometry (in this case, rotation by pi/2):

The pattern in calcyman's answer is a good sample of the way a controllable or programmable multi-directional gun would most probably be designed. Set up guns that are always shooting in whatever directions you want to be possible. Then add suppressors for all the guns (usually a glider gun or two with the same timing as the output, with maybe some catalysts nearby so the suppression reaction is clean). Then arrange the suppressors so that they can be turned off and on again by... whatever your controller mechanism is.

We do have other options available, actually. Nowadays it wouldn't be terribly difficult to set up a programmable universal constructor to build and trigger a loafer seed (for example) in any orientation. Then the controller circuitry could be arranged to decide which orientation of seed gets constructed. Of course this would be ridiculously large and slow compared to the other method -- but with Golly Hashlife, sometimes you can just zoom out a few factors of two and increase the step size proportionally, and suddenly it doesn't seem so different after all...!

Oddly enough, just in the last year we've maybe tripled or quadrupled the number of spaceships that could theoretically be controlled in this way. For any of the completed recipes in the Small Spaceship Syntheses thread, we could design a controllable gun.

Or -- the other thing that "directed" might mean -- we could build a stable reflector for any of those spaceships. A stable reflector is a pattern that just sits there until a spaceship hits it, and then some time later a copy of the spaceship comes out, heading in a different direction, and the stable reflector returns to its original configuration.

Again, for most of the new spaceships, such a stable reflector would be really huge and slow; it would convert the incoming spaceship into some other type of signal, which could then be used to build anything you wanted, not just a copy of the same spaceship.

But the technology to do this kind of thing is certainly available; all that's needed is enough grant money to get someone to do the tedious work of putting it all together. Too bad that multi-year Conway's Life pattern-construction grants are in such short supply.

You guys should sticky a thread for people just getting caught up with where the field is today.

I guess I'm interesting in the possibilities of turning spaceships and guns into signals and circuits and seeing where that could go.
