Different implementations of Life: chemistry, biology

Life is usually played with a normal desktop computer. Are you aware of alternative Life implementations, say, using electronics, chemistry, biology, or some mechanical apparatus? I have browsed Internet and I found that slime molds have been used to make cellular automata. Any references specifically to Game of Life?
