Thread for basic questions

Post by muzik » February 11th, 2016, 11:13 am

Post any minor question related to/ask for help with Conway's Life here.

For starters, are there any ways to eat any of these with a c/2 orthogonal spaceship?:

- Loaf

- Beehive

- Mango

- Boat

- Long Boat

- Ship

Are light-speed spaceships/puffers/rakes (or ones faster than c/2) possible? Theoretically an infinitely long orthogonal line would travel at light speed (and also be a replicator), so we could use a line and some other stuff to at least get a faster than _WSS speed ship.

(Sorry for the meme)
Sorry, it has been proven that spaceships cannot exceed c2 (_WSS Speed)
Though I forgot the proof.
A rule must contain b2 or b0 to get to C (or the speed of light)
At that state, time would slow down to you but not to the observer, therefore, you would look like you are speeding, but to you, you are just still, floating, this is due to Einstein's general relativity...

I'm fine with memes (actually, this is probably the only forum I use where I don't spam them everywhere).

Of course, you could somehow stabilise a straight line, but how you would do so with moving objects (which as previously proven, cannot exceed c/2) and then manage to regenerate the line I do not know.

Would it be possible to make a spaceship using the pre-pulsar as the actual thing that moves it? I know there is a ship that pushes it, but would it be actually possible to use it as the main thing that drives the ship (like the bomber in highlife does with the replicator)?

It's not really very likely, no, because the c/5 pre-pulsar reaction doesn't have very big or accessible sparks to allow multiple pre-pulsars to "rub together" and cancel each other's trailing junk.

Think of the way multiple switch engines can combine to make a Cordership, for example. The fading sparks at the back can interact with each other in many different ways, making a big enough search space that some of the permutations are likely to just happen to fade to vacuum.

Otherwise the support for trailing-junk cleanup has to be provided some other way. The c/5 spaceships in the current pre-pulsar pusher are the obvious way to do it.

In theory it's technically possible that some combination of pre-pulsars might leave behind a fuse that would happen to burn at exactly c/5 while happening to provide exactly the right support sparks to all of the pre-pulsars.

However, it seems like a bit of a stretch to imagine that something like that could actually be found -- especially in this case, where pre-pulsars can't even supply sparks to help each other move forward (can they?) let alone interact with each other to clean up trailing debris.

There are indeed some sparks, but I doubt that they'll come in useful. After all, they are made from "cancelled" blinkers:

Code: Select all

x = 15, y = 7, rule = B3/S23

Basically what we're trying to do here is replicate highlife's bomber, which uses a replicator. Pre-pulsar, in all technicality, is a replicator.

In the bomber, one of the resulting replicators is "cancelled" by a blinker, which then turns into a traffic light (these being unstable in HL), causing another blinker to form in essentially the same position, so that the replicator does not get out of control.

Since the pre-pulsar does replicate itself, we would need to somehow eat one of the replicating sides, in a way that would not upset the other, and would drag the upsetting item along.

Okay, so this ate the blocks and still made a pulsar in a different place. Progress I guess.

Code: Select all

x = 9, y = 8, rule = B3/S23

Should we make a different thread for this?

Sure! By "like this", you just mean a reflectorless rotating oscillator (every part of the pattern is active, no catalysts, nothing left behind) that spits out a glider with each rotation? Is 90-degree rotation required, or could it be 180 degrees, or a simple mirror reflection with no glide offset?

All of these options must exist in B3/S23, thanks to the horrible old Universal Constructor argument which doesn't help at all with finding actual examples.

So it's just a question of how big the smallest example of each type is. We're not likely to find definite answers about "smallest" questions any time soon, in the absence of someone doing an exhaustive search, let's say of all 8x8 patterns, with a huge distributed search project.

If such a search happens to find one of these objects. then we'll know it's the smallest one -- but that seems pretty unlikely. And even if the smallest such object is only slightly larger, let's say, 12x12, it's going to be out of our reach to find it, pretty much indefinitely. If you call an 8x8 search a "One-Chessboard Search", then a 12x12 search is a million million million million One-Chessboard sized searches.

(And One-Chessboard is bad enough. I think it would absorb the entire world's current computing capacity for a noticeable amount of time. We're at, what, 10^20 operations per second globally nowadays? And 8x8 would be 10^19 cases to test, and each test is a lot more than ten CPU operations, even with very aggressive optimization.)

A really big Volatility-Equals-One Gun could be constructed nowadays, which would actually run (slowly) in Golly -- but it would look suspiciously like a universal-constructor loop making a copy of itself, emitting a glider, and self-destructing.

We already have a maximally volatile gun, I believe, with period 177.

Yes, I wrote my answer thinking that the original "similar to this" question meant a gun with the reflectorless-rotating property, not just maximum volatility.

Offhand I can't find any volatility=1 guns besides Jason Summers' p177 construction, which is certainly impressive, but it doesn't really look too similar to the B38/S23 rotating gun:

Code: Select all

There are a few guns with volatility=1. Other than the two posted above, there is at least my p88, and a p30 with 6 mutually stabilizing queen bees. It should be possible to build a volatility 1 p92 gun based on a volatility 1 p92 twin bees oscillator found by Ivan Fomichev. Of course, the only periods with known strict volatility guns are p30 and p177.

One of the easier self-construction projects nowadays would be a single-channel Geminoid volatility-1 oscillator. It could consist of two identical 180-degree syringe reflector/construction arms, each of which would build a freeze-dried slow salvo triggered by the last passing glider. The freeze-dried salvo would destroy the reflector/construction arm, and then rebuild it in the exact same place.

The circuitry for each half could be as small as 20 still lifes, or even 19sL if it was worth including a double-ended eater. Additional objects for a self-destruct circuitry aren't strictly necessary; all of the destruction can be done with the freeze-dried slow salvo, but at a cost of constructing probably 2sL or more per destroyed still life. I would think a self-destruct circuit would be much more efficient -- probably less than half of the slow-salvo cost.

Anyone care to fire up the latest version of the Seeds of Destruction Game and find a really good self-destruct circuit?

With a few extra still lifes, the output stream could be arranged to be 90 degrees from the input stream, which would produce larger diamond-shaped oscillator that would run probably a couple of orders of magnitude faster in Golly. Minor adjustments to the freeze-dried slow salvo would produce a glacially growing loop, or a painfully slow space non-filler for the 90-degree case.

I've been waiting for a good excuse to build a sample pattern that does this kind of quick-rebuild trick with a freeze-dried salvo. I'm not sure that an infinite series of volatility=1 oscillator/gun periods is a good enough excuse -- but it's an interesting design problem anyway.

How would one construct a HWSS gun? The 3 glider synthesis can't be used if you're using glider guns because of the weird spacing, so the best I can think of is that ramming a LWSS into a MWSS reaction. Are there easier methods?

I think I see where you're coming from, but that's not strictly true. The three-glider synthesis is fine, as long as you pick an edge-shooting glider gun to start with.

You can't use the old standard p30 guns anyway, because the HWSS is too big and doesn't get out of the way fast enough. Any high-enough period gun can be run through a syringe-based edge-shooter component, and then you'll be fine.

Here's a general line of approach, if you don't want to come up with a completely new recipe (and even then, you'd do well to do the research first to see if it really will be new):

1) Check out the known ways to create an HWSS. (Mark Niemiec's website is usually a good place to start.)
2) Find a synthesis that matches your requirements -- make sure that the reaction can be repeated at the period of your chosen glider gun, and that it can place gliders on close parallel lanes if the recipe requires that.
3) Paste guns in overlapping the various gliders.
4) Unlimited HWSSes!

Can you use the newfangled Simkin Glider Gun?

Aaand of course it's pulling a caterpillar.rle on me and not letting me select anything. Paste it into

Code: Select all

 tags?

Also, what is the smallest known heavyweight spaceship gun? In case I can shrink it even more and get myself a rightful place on the wiki
