Re: Thread for basic questions

What are some reasons to be interested in "pseudo collisions" such as the example below? (As opposed to actual collisions, where either some cell is alive due to an interaction between subpatterns that wouldn't be alive from any single subpattern, or some cell is dead that would otherwise be alive from one of subpatterns.) What are reasons to distinguish such "pseudo collisions" from "non-collisions" (two subpatterns not interacting at all)?

Code: Select all

#C In generation 12, two dead cells are overpopulated rather than underpopulated
#C [[ ZOOM 16 STOP 12 ]]
x = 18, y = 11, rule = B3/S23

The only thing I can think of offhand is in relation to rule-golfing -- a pseudo-collision in Life can become an actual collision in a nearby rule.

There are also "quasi collisions", I suppose. I've never heard anyone call them that -- except me, once) -- but there are certainly glider+glider near-misses in Life that are collisions in LeapLife (for example). But they're not pseudo collisions, because no cells ever stay dead due to overpopulation.

Can you rename this to “Thread for basic CGOL questions”? There is already a “Thread for basic non-CGOL questions” somewhere in the OCA forum.

This thread is not specifically only for CGOL. You can also ask questions that are somewhat related to CGoL, such as websites, mathematics problems, and etc.

I think this thread is specifically about Conway's Life.
While CA-related non-CGoL-related questions are usually tolerated, if some question is not CA-related at all then it's likely offtopic.

Is there a list of ways that two pentadecathlons can be placed such that their envelopes overlap but they otherwise do not influence each others' evolution?
Parity Replicator Collection v1.6 is now live - please send all relevant discoveries here.

I don't know of an existing list, but it seems like an easy enumeration to do with a script. Only two relative orientations to worry about, right? (parallel and perpendicular)

Probably stupid question, but anyway:
Is it possible in CGoL to have bi-directional 90 degrees glider reflector?
Snarks have ports with input and output roles, but can device with input also acting as output (and vice versa) exist?
Like so:

It is possible to engineer such a reflector, by combining two 90-degree reflectors with transparent output glider lanes.
Not counting that possibility, I'm not aware of any "interesting" (e.g. unusually small or fast) solutions.

There was an earlier discussion on what seems to be the same question:

Is it possible to construct some sort of reflector that, when a glider goes through it, bounces back towards it (using a 180-degree reflector), and comes out on the input side? In other words, is it possible to make a reversible reflector?
You can combine two composite reflectors with transparent output lanes.
This example is asymmetric (reversing changes timing); there should be something smaller and/or symmetric.

What about the Jubjub reflector?
As I understood the question, the problem was to make a reflector where the output path is different from the input lane (e.g. a 90-degree reflector), but the output and the input can be exchanged and the device will still work. The Jubjub reflector is "trivially reversible", because the output path coincides with the input path -- reversing it is a do-nothing operation.

I was thinking more on the lines of a symmetric reflector that reflects a glider on the axis of symmetry, since that kind of reflector would automatically be reversible because symmetry demands it. Besides, your example is still trivial in the sense that no components are used both in the original and reversed reflecting reactions. In other words, both reactions are completely separated, which isn't really a solution for a non-trivial reversible reflector.
EDIT: This would have worked if the beehive was transparent (uses RNW3T46):

It's a quasi-still life, as it contains 2 still lifes (blocks) that're diagonally spaced 1-cell. "Quasi" overrides "pseudo".

It is a quasi still life, consisting of two parts connected by a cell dead from underpopulation.
One part is a strict still life (the block).
Another part is a pseudo still life (the biblock), consisting of two blocks connected by cells dead from overpopulation.

Most of the exploration in this area was done by MathAndCode, I believe. A little bit happened in 2023, though I'm not entirely sure whether that was intended to (possibly) lower the 15-glider bound, or just to improve the coding efficiency for universal construction. (?)

Most of the theorizing for "3-GPSE" RCT mechanisms happened back in 2020. I don't think anybody since then has really tried to independently run through MathAndCode's suggestions again, and/or look for new potential mechanisms that MathAndCode might have missed.

So ... it's certainly still possible that there's a way for gliders from three GPSEs (instead of four) to interact to enable universal construction at an epicentre location. There just hasn't been much of any further progress recently, either to generate new ideas for extra-cheap RCT mechanisms or to work through the space of possibilities and definitively eliminate options.

confocaloid's previous summary gives some good information:

27 options for 3D range-1 outer-totalistic neighbor counts (0 through 26 neighbors)
1,426,144 distinct configurations for 3D range-1 INT, according to this complicated-looking program.

The table that used to be at "Isotropic_non-totalistic_rule#Table_of_isotropic_non-totalistic_rulespaces" in LifeWiki has moved to Higher-range isotropic non-totalistic rule at the moment, though the particular statistics we're looking for here are higher dimension rather than higher range.

Has anyone double-checked that 1426144 number using Burnside's lemma? Google only seems to know it as a brake-pad part number.
