The figure is clickable in the PDF version, if you're using Adobe Acrobat, to get the RLE. (Very nearly all of the illustrations work that way.)
Argh. Foiled by Chrome native pdf handler.

What would you name this? "Lightspeed teleporter"?

I'm not sure I'd want to give it a name that's any shorter than "mechanism that could be used for diagonal lightspeed communication" -- the important word being "diagonal".

It's not a complete signal-processing system until there's some plausible way of generating the gliders. We could only manage lightspeed "teleportation" of a glider over fairly short distances, much shorter than the long diagonal of the mechanism producing the gliders.

What are any previous censuses where instead of counting occurrences of single objects, the "types" of the final patterns are counted? Here the "type" may mean either the set of objects occurring in the ash (e.g. "blocks and blinkers, and nothing else", "nothing") or the multiset of objects occurring in the ash (e.g. "two blocks and one blinker, and nothing else").

The following posts from several years ago appear to imply the existence of a third figure eight on pulsar isomer:

Dull p24. There should be one left.
Does such a thing exist, and if so, why has it not appeared in C1 so far?

I don't think so, there are only two different rotations the figure 8 can assume on one of the pulsar's finger sparks

Does anyone have reference or key for the image in the gallery in the kinetic symmetry wiki page? Like which symmetry each pattern illustrates? Are they in the same order as the table?

Is there an official name for this spark?

Code: Select all

x = 3, y = 4, rule = b3/s23
bo$3o$3o$bo!
I've decided to finally create a wiki page for this thing under the name of line-of-six spark, with some other names that I've seen thrown around listed in the introductory section with references. So perhaps this is a fitting answer, unless someone wants to dispute which of those names in the intro section should be used instead.

On the topic of potentially notable sparks with unknown names, this massive, highly symmetric spark/diehard with two very simple 9-cell initial conditions doesn't seem to have a name either:

Code: Select all

x = 3, y = 5, rule = B3/S23
3o$bo$bo$bo$3o!

Code: Select all

x = 3, y = 7, rule = B3/S23
bo$3o2$bo2$3o$bo!
It's worth a footnote at least somewhere since this spark is a fundamental part of the period-240 slow puffer, as the spark ignites (absolutely love it when disconnected CA terms like these make sense together) the fuse which the head puffer lays. Besides that, I don't know of any other situations where it pops up. The period-44 pi hassles hassles a rather similar configuration of two pi-heptominoes which is fundamentally different due to t having even symmetry whereas this spark is odd in both directions. Back when I independently rediscovered this in my own early Life experimentation I named it "firework", and am probably the only person in the world to have given this specific pattern this specific name, so if there are any other names with nonzero staying power due to not being used by one and only one person I'd be overjoyed to hear them.

I am writing for the totalistic rules Vote (B5678/S45678) and Vote 4/5 (B4678/S35678) on LifeWiki. Is there anything good in old emails about them?
(I have another related question, too, but it was buried by another post)
Is a period-3 or above oscillator possible in Vote?
As there are a number of natural periods on catagolue, is Vote 4/5 possibly omniperiodic?

Somewhat surprisingly, I'm getting zero relevant hits from searches by rulestring or by the word "Vote", in the LifeCA archives.

Seems like that description represents a good fraction of Herschel conduits -- a number of them have an attachment that either absorbs the output Herschel's first natural glider, or else they assume that the following conduit is a dependent conduit which prevents the first natural glider from appearing.

Seems like you can't be talking about elementary conduits, since the "first/second natural glider" only applies to Herschels. Anyway, it seems like the current collection threads are sufficient. A Herschel conduit that needs a glider-suppressing weld is still a Herschel conduit, and can be posted to that thread.

The first reaction seems very similar to the snark, and that's because it is. I'm not exactly a catalyst expert but perhaps another catalyst could be used instead of 31.4 to restore the block.

How do I embed a lifeviewer into my post? If there isn’t a place where a pattern is, do I have to type out the RLE manually?
Helloshe, I like pentadecathlons and small-period motifs. I also don’t like how some people say that a hassler can’t be mutually supporting; a better metric would be that if there are any casing stator cells in the object being hassled.
Soli Deo Gloria!

Try an experimental reply to one of the above posts that includes an embedded LifeViewer. You'll see all the tags that you need to add, and you'll see how it translates into an actual LifeViewer when you hit Preview (just don't actually post your experimental message). Basically you just need a "code" tag and a "/code" tag, both in square brackets.

RLE is usually copied and pasted from somewhere else, rather than typed in manually. If you paste in a chunk of RLE text, you can select it and then click the "code display" button above the post edit box -- the icon looks like </>.

How many phi-sparkers are known other than the pentadecathlon, Tanner's p46, and perhaps arrangements of guns that create phi sparks via spaceship collisions? Oscillators such as 22P36 don't count as the sparks are far too internal to be of any use.

On a similar line, are there any known oscillators that create line-of-six sparks, obviously discounting the worker bee and its relatives and 66P13 due to the sparks being effectively in the center?

Cross-posting things found in the last few days: a p40 B hassler, a p80 century hassler (reduced by hotdogpi), p63 century hassler, and a p112 R shuttle

A substantial reduction to the p63:

Apologies for the double-post, but here's a major reduction to the period-57 glider gun (from 86x74 to 68x67) by finally finding a way to generate a glider stream without needing a glider loop whatsoever:

The second one is adapted from an R-pentomino factory. If it counts, then the following p129 would count too:

Code: Select all

x = 64, y = 44, rule = B3/S23

EDIT: I saw another period-120 honey farm hassler from the collection that has one half of the phi spark slightly but necessarily perturbed to support the main engine

Is it proven that there are no still-life glider eaters with recovery time 3? If yes, we may change the sentence
The smallest known recovery time is 4 generations, attained by eater 1.
on the LifeWiki page Eater into
The smallest possible recovery time is 4 generations, attained by eater 1.
.

A similar problem is that is it proven whether a period-2 c/2 spaceship has at least 64 cells. LifeWiki claims
In terms of its 64 cells, it is the smallest period 2 spaceship
.

LifeWiki uses pentadecathlon.com as a reference, but the reference also lists 46P4H1V0.1, 67P5H1V1.1 and the 3-engine cordership as the smallest within their respective speeds, which is false.

There is a similar problem about 25P3H1V0.1 and 25P3H1V0.2.
With 25 cells, it is tied with 25P3H1V0.1 as the smallest c/3 spaceship.
Is it proven that a period-3 c/3 spaceship has at least 25 cells?
Still drifting.

It seems to me that the word "known" is implied in both of those sentences, just not stated. I guess we could either add "known" to both sentences, or start some difficult philosophico-mathematical arguments about whether or not Life spaceships exist when they haven't been discovered yet.

I don't think that it's going to be possible to definitively rule out the existence of weird unlikely c/3 things with low population, any more than weird unlikely c/137 things with low population. Below some population it's going to be really unlikely that anything is going to travel fast enough to reconstitute itself at time T, T/3 cells away -- but as soon as you get past the point where it's possible to exhaustively enumerate and test all possible combinations of N cells in the largest possible bounding box that might be relevant, it seems like it will be very hard to come up with any kind of workable proof.
