Is there a tool I can use to look up a pattern to find any that match it in the database? I remember using one in the past, but I don't remember what it was.
For the Catagolue database, use
biggiemac's script (see the link at the bottom of the message for the Golly 4.x / Python3 version).

"p25" and "p32" mean "pattern repeats every 25 ticks" or "every 32 ticks". It would be a little clearer to say "this eater takes 25 ticks to re-stabilize; are there any eaters that take longer?"
("Recovery time" is a little different, since this eater actually recovers enough to accept another glider in only 16 ticks.)
The 25-tick recovery eater is the slowest one in Dean Hickerson's 1998 eater collection, but as JP21's response indicates, some slower ones have been found in the decades since then.
Of course it's very easy to engineer an eater that takes as long to recover as you might want, using something like a
trombone slide and some kind of signal circuitry, along the lines of early stable reflectors but with the outputs capped off with (more) eaters. So this challenge needs to be specifically a "direct fizzle" ... or some terminology like that, I'm not quite sure what. Some of these extended-fizzle reactions aren't exactly "elementary"...

no No NO !
I will NOT send my Viro ( a,k,a, Glider ) down some crazy Conduit
rathole !
this whole Question is going to devolve upon the issue of exactly what constitutes being
eaten
versus being a transmutated
signal ( destructive ? ) or even
Heisenburped - farted
( it has been my experience that if a thing can be burped, it can be farted as well... )

so now we need to move this to the Max Planck CA thread

The only pi-making conduits that produce it are BF22P and HF2P.

How to enter a partial to ntzfind?
* Use get-rows.py from the
qfind repo (instructions included)
* Move or copy the "initrows.txt" file to your ntzfind folder.
* Run
where <args> is your usual ntzfind arguments.

Four questions:
1.What is BADS notation, how is it related to the B/S notation and where is it used?
2.What is the asymptotic growth rate of infinite distinct Corderships gun?
3.How to understand the existence of odd-period oscillators (possibly including p1 still lives) in alternating rules, particularly B0 rules? There is some discussion:

So technically odd periods can't exist in B0 rules at all?
Odd-period oscillators can exist in B0 rules, as long as the rule is self-complementary. Here is a p3 in B0124/S01235:
Code: Select all
x = 14, y = 10, rule = B0124/S01235

It doesn't have to be exactly self-complementary. Here's a p3 in a maze-like rule (B012456/S5).
Code: Select all
x = 16, y = 16, rule = B012456/S5

4.How to construct a working (linear) sawtooth pattern based on the following reaction?

It looks like that pattern is already a sawtooth; the spaceship merely goes off the screen before that behavior becomes apparent.

Now we either need to figure out a way to place a catalyst that interferes with one of the reactions beforehand at the placement associated with that timing or change the period of the gun in order to account for the Doppler effect.

Terminology question: Normally, the rotor contains all cells that are moving, while the stator contains all cells that aren't. What happens when P2 oscillating sections are required for stabilization but aren't part of the main oscillating section, such as the P22 and P26 below? Are the P2 sections part of the rotor or stator?
Code: Select all
x = 83, y = 23, rule = B3/S23

Ok sorry for asking this again. (At least I know more this time.) I'm having trouble compiling. Yesterday I downloaded Microsoft Visual C++ 2008 Express Edition and followed
this tutorial. I tried compiling ofind, and I got this:
Code: Select all
c:\ofind>cl ofind.c
Microsoft (R) 32-bit C/C++ Optimizing Compiler Version 15.00.30729.01 for 80x86
Copyright (C) Microsoft Corporation. All rights reserved.
ofind.c
Microsoft (R) Incremental Linker Version 9.00.30729.01
Copyright (C) Microsoft Corporation. All rights reserved.
/out:ofind.exe
ofind.obj
ofind.obj : error LNK2019: unresolved external symbol _random referenced in function _initHash
ofind.exe : fatal error LNK1120: 1 unresolved externals
Is this a simple programming error or something else?
I tried compiling dr too and got this:
Code: Select all
Setting environment for using Microsoft Visual Studio 2008 x86 tools.
C:\Program Files (x86)\Microsoft Visual Studio 9.0\VC>cd c:\
c:\>cd c:\dr
c:\dr>dir

dr.c
c1 : fatal error C1083: Cannot open source file: 'dr.c': No such file or directory
Did I not select it properly? It's in a zip file, if that helps in any way.
Also, I know that the
LifeWIki compiling tutorial uses Cygwin, but AFAIK that tutorial is outdated, so I didn't use it.

WHY WOULD YOU WANT THAT FOR COMPILING ANYWAYS? Plain gcc is good.

I'll try that, thanks.

You compile them with a dedicated C/C++ compiler, like Microsoft Visual C++ 2008 Express Edition (downloadable for free).
I also got mingw64, but couldn't figure out how to use it. All tutorials differed in the a step from what I saw.
