23/3 day

Post by muzik » March 22nd, 2016, 7:52 pm

That's right.

B3/S23

3/23/2016 (US date format).

Should there be a World Conway's Life Day or something? Has there been one before or something?

(Also, the discoverer of the glider is turning 100 later this year)

Cool. But the people in America say it's still the 22nd (I'm pretty sure)

Timezones are strange, I mean can you travel through time by flying around the world?

Back on topic, how would these days be celebrated? Like, a giant meet up of enthusiasts or something?

And also, 2020 is 50 years from 1970, the year of the game's creation/discovery... What would happen on the 23rd of March 2020?

Oh my god, he's still alive! We should celebrate his 100th on the forums in September :D

John Conway didn't discover the glider, technically. As Conway said in telling the story at one point, it was "some guy" (Richard K. Guy) who first noticed a group of five cells moving diagonally, while manually tracking what happened to the R-pentomino.

Whoops... Stupid me... I did know that Richard Guy found the glider... i just thought no other life enthusiasts were almost a hundred years old... Yeah, my hasty progression of thoughts went "GoL? 100 years old? John Conway! Hmm... December!" Yeah that's pretty embarrassing...
Best wishes to you, Scorbie

Conway's still a spring chicken, though -- he won't even be eighty, even in December. I'm sure he's still young and spry enough to be able to tell you what day of the week your birthday is on, in just a few seconds...!

A nice little article someone made about Richard Guy for his 100th birthday :)

Going to bump this thread back up because 23/3/17 is approaching (just over a week).

So what will we actually do with this day? A meetup? Some sort of celebration? I have no idea...

What would be cool is if the game were well known enough for maths lessons in schools to be dedicated to it for just one day. They used to do something similar on pi day (which was yesterday, but of course I had a test) so it would be cool, but that's just my imagination

Here's 23/3/17 as a generations rule. (LifeViewer should have a feature to generate a random soup in a rule so you can see what it looks like without having to post a huge RLE. Maybe it already does and I just don't know)
