which 64-bit Linux is best for Golly?
which 64-bit Linux is best for Golly?
I currently have a 32-bit Linux system (Mint 13) running as a VM on my Mac. I want to create a 64-bit Linux VM so I can build and test 64-bit versions of Golly, so I'd like some advice about which flavor of Linux I should opt for.
If you currently use 64-bit Golly on a 64-bit Linux system, please tell me which type of Linux you use and its version number/name. If there's a clear favorite among forum users then I'll go for that.

Re: which 64-bit Linux is best for Golly?
So, nobody is using 64-bit Golly on Linux? Excellent -- that's one less build I won't have to do!
Re: which 64-bit Linux is best for Golly?
I think the version of Golly I eventually got to work was 32-bit--not sure about that--but I am running Ubuntu on a 64-bit machine.

If you're using Golly 2.7 then just quit and restart it. The initial message in the status bar tells you whether it's 32-bit or 64-bit.Kazyan wrote:I think the version of Golly I eventually got to work was 32-bit--not sure about that...
(If you are using 32-bit Golly please try the 2.8b3 build I released a few days ago and let me know how it goes.)

Figured I'd miss something obvious. This version is, in fact, 64-bit.Andrew wrote:If you're using Golly 2.7 then just quit and restart it. The initial message in the status bar tells you whether it's 32-bit or 64-bit.

Ok, that's good to know. Which version of Ubuntu are you using?Kazyan wrote:This version is, in fact, 64-bit.
Re: which 64-bit Linux is best for Golly?
Running Ubuntu 14.04.4 LTS here, but will be updating to Ubuntu 16.04 at some point.
Re: which 64-bit Linux is best for Golly?
I tried installing 64-bit versions of Ubuntu 14 and 16 on my Mac but couldn't get them to work (my version of Parallels is probably too old). I did manage to install Ubuntu 12 and build a 64-bit version of Golly, so please try it out and let me know what happens -- there's a download link in the announcement of Golly 2.8b3.tod222 wrote:Running Ubuntu 14.04.4 LTS here, but will be updating to Ubuntu 16.04 at some point.

I develop on Ubuntu 14.04 64bit.

Re: which 64-bit Linux is best for Golly?
I'm using Linux Mint 17.3, but I think there is a problem:
I typed "sudo apt-get install golly" in Terminal, but I got Golly 2.5, an old version.

Re: which 64-bit Linux is best for Golly?
I am using 64-bit Golly 2.7 with Debian 8 about a year. It works fine. I used 64-bit Golly 2.5 too.

Just use this 2.8 download: https://sourceforge.net/projects/golly/ ... golly-2.8/David wrote:I'm using Linux Mint 17.3, but I think there is a problem:
