A small suggestion: A keyboard shortcut for the "Shrink Selection" function. Ctrl+G or something, maybe, so it's easy to shrink, copy, then paste
Done! (And magically back-ported to your version of Golly.) Try the "S" key.

Well that's embarrassing, I also apparently never knew about Preferences -> Keyboard...
Just when you think you know your way around Golly :oops:

How about adding an option that doesn't invert the cells every odd generation in rules with B0? The whole universe would be ON cells and it would say "Population = Infinity-5" instead of "Population = 5". I don't think it is any harder than implemeting B0 the way it is now.
I was so socially awkward in the past and it will haunt me for the rest of my life.

[Insert mandatory complaint over the use of "infinity" as a number here]
You could say like Population = 5 (inverted), though, which would in my opinion be better, as it doesn't cause that reaction.

When HROT support comes to Golly, I think it'd be for the best if it became the canonical format for LtL rules as well. A LTL rule string can be stored as an equivalent HROT string with less characters than would be needed for a LtL string, notably due to the removal of the redundant and confusing M parameter, and the new format would be generally easier to read as well.

Of course, inputting a LtL string would still be supported (just as Evans' format is), the string would just be converted over to the new format on the fly.

A "Save" feature like any sane application instead of just a "Save As" (should be ported to Ctrl/Cmd+Shift+S). It does get annoying when the "Confirm Overwrite?" window pops up every time I want to make sure my pattern survives a Golly crash.
Each day is a hidden opportunity, a frozen waterfall that's waiting to be realised, and one that I'll probably be ignoring

I've been thinking about this in the context of Microsoft Excel, which uses Alt+Enter to create newlines inside a spreadsheet cell, where any sane modern application uses Shift+Enter. But Excel's Alt+Enter "standard" is so old that it would probably do more harm than good to consider changing it at this point.

Golly's Save-As behavior seems like it might be similar. Like the old Aesop's fable about the two men and the donkey, it seems likely that lots of people won't like the behavior no matter if we change it or keep it the same.

Luckily Golly is endlessly configurable, so there's a decent workaround. Give this a try:

Code: Select all

-- silent-save.lua
-- save this script to Golly Scripts folder, then
-- map it to Ctrl+Shift+S in File > Preferences > Keyboard

local g = golly()
local path = g.getpath()
local type = "rle"
if path:sub(-7) == ".rle.gz" then type = "rle.gz" end
if path:sub(-3) == ".mc" then type = "mc" end
if path:sub(-6) == ".mc.gz" then type = "mc.gz" end
g.save(path, type)
g.show("Current pattern saved to "..path)

Please support unbound variables
There was a discussion on the RTR about this and I think the "undound" syntax would work well

how about a way (or an easier-to-find way if it exists) to rotate a pattern?

The > key should rotate a pattern clockwise. Does that not work for you for some reason?

As Saka says, select the pattern you want to rotate and type the > or < keys to rotate clockwise or counterclockwise. This also works during a paste operation, before you click to drop the pattern into position.

Shortcut keys should be visible in the Edit menu (and other menus). Look toward the bottom of the list for Rotate Clockwise and Rotate Anticlockwise.

Weirdly, for me at least, there's actually a conflict between the rotate counterclockwise button and the Preferences menu button. Not sure if this is default, but the Preferences button is set to , while the "Rotate Anticlockwise" button is set to <.

Holding down Shift to surpress the comma works fine, but it's only required for the counterclockwise, and just pressing > on its own (technically .) successfully rotates clockwise. Since I didn't realize the necessity of the Shift, I have a habit of just pressing > three times to rotate counterclockwise.

Huh, this is interesting. I always use Shift+< and Shift+>, so hadn't seen that behavior.

If you go to Preferences > Keyboard and press the various key combinations, you can see that Shift+< is mapped to "Rotate Anticlockwise", the comma key is mapped to the Preferences dialog, Shift+> is mapped to "Rotate Clockwise" ... and the period key is theoretically mapped to "Show All States".

However, no matter whether the relevant toolbar is visible or not, the period key never actually does anything with "Show All States" -- it just rotates clockwise, as you say. Some kind of weird override is happening there for some reason, but only for one of the two keys.

Of course if anyone really wants to not have to hold down the Shift key to do rotations, it's easy to just re-map those keyboard shortcuts.

I made a pattern that contains the continous syntheses of the cheapest spaceships of every currently synthesisable velocity. The constituent syntheses are up to date as of today.
Here's the pattern as it actually got checked in for Golly 3.5 (unless it turns out to be Golly 4.0):

There have definitely been some improvements since April, like 58P5H1V1 going down from 126 gliders to 100, or 56P6H1V0 being reduced from 310 gliders to 294. If anyone wants to do the necessary patching I'll be happy to check in an update, but as it stands I think it's a very nice snapshot of April 2020.

Will HROT rules be supported in Golly 3.5?
I was so socially awkward in the past and it will haunt me for the rest of my life.

How about weighted HROT?

<s>just skip to the general</s>

ok but seriously weighted HROT is HROT, Custom neighborhood, etc all in one convenient package; imo that should be added since Golly is really slacking behind LV there

Would it be possible to add a mode with multipliable commands like in vim, where pressing something like 5, rightarrow, would move the selection right by 5 steps ?

Golly was designed to be extended in exactly this kind of way, but without cluttering up the basic interface with options that most people will never use.

That is, you're supposed to write a Lua or Python script that provides whatever custom functionality you want, and then map that script to a hotkey using Keyboard > Preferences.

An extremely popular edit-assistance script might certainly find its way into the base Golly package eventually, after proving its usefulness for a year or two. This kind of thing doesn't happen very often, though, so it seems likely that most people are getting along fine with shift.py (Shift+S): your example action is currently available via S5 0[Enter].

A few problems in Golly 3.4:
  1. The Minstrel Remover and Detector in Help→Online Archives→Very Large Patterns→Signal Converters contains a broken AND gate near the label M4, where a boat is missing;
  2. When applying showinviewer.lua, weekender-distaff.rle.gz under Rakes folder gives an error claiming "THEME Book" to be invalid;
  3. When applying showinviewer.lua, basic-rakes.rle under Rakes folder gives an error claiming "LABEL 7" to be invalid.

Items 2 and 3 relating to showinviewer.lua are likely because Golly's version of LifeViewer is out of date.

You can get the latest version here:
https://lazyslug.com/lifeview/plugin/js/release/

Depending on which platform you're on you'll need to save it in one of the following locations:
  • Linux: ~/.golly/lifeviewer/
  • Mac OS X: ~/Library/Application Support/Golly/lifeviewer/
  • Windows XP: C:\Documents and Settings\username\Application Data\Golly\lifeviewer\
  • On Windows 7+: C:\Users\username\AppData\Roaming\Golly\lifeviewer\
The next version of Golly has a script that updates LifeViewer.

And I've fixed Item 1: the Minstrel Remover and Detector now has one more boat.

I remember having mentioned the script database https://www.conwaylife.com/scripts/ to be outdated, as it collects obsolete Perl scripts. Just now I found that the LifeWiki Pattern Archive https://www.conwaylife.com/golly.html, which can be found at Online Archives, has the same problem. It doesn't even have a link to 4-in-a-row Cordership! Why?

Alternate select options would be a great addition. Whenever working with large patterns with skewed-repeating sections like the waterbear or currently-backburnered (27,1)c/72 ship, it's been a real pain to only be able to select rectangular regions.
I am simply bumping this suggestion because I am having the same issue working on the (34,7)c/156 caterpillar.

EDIT: I found out about Shift+L which is very limited but it sort of works for what I'm doing.

EDIT 2: Shift+L only works for moving the cursor to the corners and in the middle of the selection. It doesn't allow for selecting any other proportion of the pattern in the clipboard.

Would we be able to know when we know everything there is to know?
How would we know what we don’t know that we don’t know?

The (34,7)c/156 caterpillar is finished!!! You can download it here.

- A way to see the population inside of a selection. It would report information of the selection in the same place where it already reports wd x ht
