While you're waiting, Golly's support of Python and Lua scripting lets you extend Golly's functionality yourself. If you start with a LifeViewer-compatible random soup pattern in the clipboard, a few lines of Python or Lua will run the alternating rules on the pattern until you hit Escape. Or you might want to start with just the alternating rule string in the clipboard, and have the script auto-generate a random soup and run it -- and leave the RLE in the clipboard when you exit, for copying in to LifeViewer.
The LifeViewer alternative doesn't really have to be in a preview of a post, either. Just paste the RLE into
this page, for example.
If you save that HTML page to your local desktop, it can be made to work just as well even without an Internet connection. Depending on your browser, you may have to edit the HTML slightly and rename the LifeViewer plugin: recent builds of Chrome seem to be renaming it to something like
lv-plugin.js.download, and then the HTML refers to that, which sometimes triggers annoying browser security features.
