A puffer/spaceship has a volatile period if its period can be changed by perturbing it. Period multiplication does not count.
Surprisingly, a lot of puffers don't have a volatile period. For example, the Schick engine has a non-volatile period. No matter what you do, it'll always have a period of 12n. The Coe ship's period is slightly more volatile. There are a few rakes that rephase the Coe ship, but it's not easy.
EDIT: As dvgrn points out, technically everything is a multiple of 4 or 2. So I'll try something else.
A puffer spits out exhaust at some base period. Its total period is then some multiple of this base period. A puffer displays period volatility when its exhaust is perturbed in such a way that changes the base period.
Puffer 2 has a volitile period(Well actually not but it is based on the first definition and I think it is perfectly good. We can call it a vulnerable period if you want to):
Code: Select all
x = 279, y = 22, rule = LifeHistory
4.D.3D.3D$4.D.D.D.D.D$4.D.D.D.D.D$4.D.D.D.D.D$4.D.3D.3D2$267.D.D.D.3D
$267.D.D.D.D.D$267.D.3D.D.D$267.D3.D.D.D$267.D3.D.3D$7.3A4$.A8.A4.A$A
5.A2.A4.A$A6.3A4.A247.A8.A4.A$A2.A10.A2.A243.A5.A2.A4.A$3A11.3A244.A
6.3A4.A$261.A2.A10.A2.A$261.3A11.3A!
Yes, but the base period is still 20. So this seems to be ordinary period multiplication.
Okay, but I said if you don't want to change the definition, just make a new term calles vulnerable period

Vulnerable period sounds like something you'd try to avoid, such as 76 and 77 for the syringe.

The Oblique Speed of a spaceship will be (m,n)(m+n)c/p(I am not sure if I am using the traditional letters). For example, Sir Robin will have a oblique speed of (2,1)c/2 and the oblique puffer(the only one I could think of) will have a speed of (24,19)43c/236 Edit 1:Where did the 6 go? Fixed(it has a normal speed of (24,19)c/236)

I've got a stupid idea.
loopgun: a gun using a x(x = g or h or b or p) to 2x conduit, to let the "x" part circle.
Then after typing these I've got AN EVEN MORE stupid idea.
hasslergun: a gun using hassler-partials to construct the spaceship.

I've got somestupid ideas:
Mesusyntheses:A synthesis made out of some common evolutionary sequences(that would be useful for a rule without common spaceships).
Mesusynthesis gun:A gun using methusyntheses.

OMOX: oscillator made of objects with apgcodes starting with letter "x".
SMOX: spaceship made of objects with apgcodes starting with letter "x".
XMOX: either OMOX or SMOX.
At least one phase must consist of two or more currently non-interacting still lifes, oscillators and/or spaceships.

Banana/V spark: A spark that can be either a banana spark or a V spark with the same effects on the active region.
Take this for example:
Code: Select all
x = 19, y = 19, rule = B3/S23
6bo$6bo$5bo2$6b2o$7b2o7bo$8bo5bo2b2o$13b2o$12b2o2$5b2o$4b2o$bo2bo5bo$

Although the banana spark and the V spark are shown at different locations, the pattern as a whole quickly returns to symmetry.

I've mentioned this on Discord a few times, but until at least November 8, Herschel climbers are now Herschel walkers. This is to improve our site ranking, as many people will be looking for the other meaning of Herschel Walker.
"Offset LOM" and "Offset honey farm" are names for active regions. Without my computer, I can't show them here, but the former is the one that's hassled in Karel's p177, while the latter leaves a bi-block with phi-sparks being generated near the end. There's also "house tie boat" (yes, it's up there on the list) and "pre-anvil" (the one that creates an anvil when it hits certain objects). Someone on Discord called the pre-anvil "anvillar" as a portmanteau of anvil + caterpillar, but I'm not seeing any connection to the caterpillar.
The L-hexomino is the one that's a line of five plus one sideways at one end (5o$o!, if I'm doing it correctly, since I'm typing RLEs by hand). It creates two blinkers relatively far apart, and if you look at p116 in b3s23osc, you'll see it. It's much more common than census.rle indicates. In case you're wondering about the other one that looks like an L (4o$o$o!), that's the V-hexomino if it needs a name, but it's not as essential since it doesn't have its own unique evolutionary sequence.

What would be an equivalent of the

hexagonal tiling?
Re: Create your own terminology

Duodecahash, probably. It's octohash (octo=eight) because there are eight different ways you can orient a pattern on a square grid using rotations and reflections. On a hex grid, there are six rotations, and then reflect the pattern and rotate it six times again, so that makes 12. Correct me if I'm wrong.

"Ripple" was coined by me in 2021 on Discord, but I'll define it here so forum-only people can see it: a word for scratches and imperfections on the edge of an exploding pattern which leave a mark on the inside of the explosion instead of unraveling the whole. A
Hensel rule is said to be
- forum searchable when its canonical rulestring does not contain any minuses,
- strongly forum searchable when it is forum searchable and each of two parts of its rulestring is nonempty,
- weakly forum searchable when there are no minuses in one of two parts of its rulestring (in the birth part or in the survival part).
Snowflakes,
Suns,

Einstein is weakly forum searchable.
Conquerors and Colonizers,
Serviettes and
Seeds are searchable but are not strongly searchable. Every
Life-like rule is searchable.

The

S2ace4y and the maxrule is
