Most notably, the maximum response size is now 32 MB (as opposed to 1 MB), allowing for Catagolue to store the entirety of xs21s and xs22s (maybe xs23s too) in b3s23/synthesis-costs without having to modify too much of the src.
Slight clarification: the maximum response size has always been 32 MB, and the maximum object size has always been 1 MB. What's changed is the following:
  • A tabulation (part of a census consisting of all apgcodes that share the same prefix, such as xs21) can now be split across multiple Datastore objects. This means that census size is limited only by the amount of RAM necessary to run the backend Java code that processes them.
  • The update process (which largely deals with Shinjuku updates and box contributions) requests the synthesis-costs census in multiple requests (one for each tabulation), to avoid hitting the maximum response limit of 32 MB.
  • The internal instance type has been upgraded so that Catagolue has more RAM and faster clock speed.
For synthesis costs specifically, this means that the maximum tabulation size has been increased from '1 MB compressed' (which is about 5 MB uncompressed) to '32 MB uncompressed'. As such, it should be able to comfortably store all of the strict 22-bit still-lifes.

About Catagolue. I noticed that when trying to search your own userpage, you can make a typo and the web shows a page either way.
For example: https://catagolue.hatsya.com/user/This% ... ot%20exist for the user "This username does not exist".

The web generates userpages for every combination of characters as a placeholder. If that is true. How can you encounter your page and know is not a typo or that forgot something. I don't see my contributions and i uploaded some hauls to catagolue.

And another thing i'm wondering.
Please enter payosha256 key (e.g. '#anon'):
Anon looks like a username of someone.
This needs to be?
a) Username
b) @Username
c) 'Username'
d) '@Username'
e) #Username
f) #@Username
g) '#Username'
h) '#@Username'

Or maybe:
i) Password
j) 'Password'
k) #Password
L) '#Password'

The thing you need to enter in that line needs to be clarified without doubt. I suggest adding better example in software "apgluxe-windows-x86_64.exe" precompiled for windows 10 to clarify that better.

Catagolue has gone offline with a "503 Over Quota" error at least twice in the past two days.

Looks to be because of yujh searching these two rules:

How is that possible? Is it the same reason why a large number of hauls I uploaded for B37e/S234z remain unprocessed?

It's just that these two rules both produce extremely large hauls, and yujh is uploading each of them once every couple of minutes, which is probably a bit too much for the site to handle. Both apgoucher and yujh have acknowledged that this is probably the reason why, although the searching still continues.

Yikes. I think they will have to ip ban me for a while(probably 6 hours since this post) as I’m still now in school and can’t do anything to that. Also one of my other rule is working as usual, I don’t really know why

Apologies for the inconvenience, but catagolue should be back to normal. The searching of that rule could have ended on itself which should be pretty normal. But anyways no more waiting for hauls!

How would one go about editing the names of patterns, as well as what pattern names link to the wiki?

Catagolue is acting up again; I can't view the committed hauls for b35ys234n, of which there should be about 2800.

There's someone named TechnobladeNeverDies who submit hauls to b3s23/C1 with the version 'charityengine.com'. Doubtlessly, that's a spam.

Also, he is searching faster than John Goodman. WTF? I think he's using multiple (at least 30 or so!) machines at once.

It's entirely legitimate (you can tell by the quantity of new discoveries). Thanks to users 'Rytis' and 'very', apgsearch is running on https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Charity_Engine with help from an intermediate server that submits work (1 unit = 10 million soups) to Charity Engine, aggregates the results of that work into complete hauls (20 units = 200 million soups per haul), and submits them to Catagolue.

30? I'd estimate between 1500 and 2000 CPU cores based on the fact that today's contribution is about 10x greater than I was ever able to produce (with 150-200 cores).

FWIW, my output for the past few months has been on 112 cores. By my math, there were probably a good 11k cores at work yesterday, assuming all the cores on Charity Engine are equivalent to mine (which probably isn't too far off, since there's bound to be some relatively weak cores like Raspberry Pi clusters on there)

Alas, I shall not reach my goal of taking top contributor overall at this rate :D

Hi folks,

We're big fans of all things CA and GoL here at Charity Engine. This is being supported as part of our grants program, so it's a freebie with our compliments.

Thanks, Mark! I noticed that you're doing a little bit of symmetric searching, but the vast majority of work is going to asymmetric searches. How is work being apportioned between the different symmetry types? I would personally like to see a bit more symmetric searching since it has a higher probability of finding new objects. I Hope I'm not being too presumptuous here.

Edit: I see that this was discussed about a week ago on Discord, although it's still unclear to me how the work is apportioned or what proportion of the work goes to which symmetry type.

Edit 2: I got some clarification on Discord. My understanding is that Charity Engine provides the computing power (thanks again!), but the work allocation is independent.

The wiki-linked names can be found here, while the non-wiki-linked ones are here.
These Catagolue files are used in my Pattern Lookup web app. There are two ways to use this app:

1. Enter an apgcode. If it is in the database:

Its name will be displayed
You can click the Catgolue button to view its Catgolue page
If it has a LifeWiki page, you can click the LifeWiki button to view it

2. Search by pattern name. Select a name.

You can click the Catgolue button to view its Catgolue page
If it has a LifeWiki page, you can click the LifeWiki button to view the LifeWiki page

I'm having a little trouble with this, though I can get it to work with some finagling. For example, if I enter just "xs36_g88e1lmz01134j0v0rrzy111", the Catagolue button gets me to a Catagolue page tha tells me no rule is specified, but if I enter "xs36_g88e1lmz01134j0v0rrzy111/b3s23" then I get to the page I'm looking for.

I was temporarily confused by the second textbox (that gets filled in with the name if applicable) and spent some time trying to paste apgcodes into it. Maybe that box could be slightly greyed out, and/or could contain greyed-out text saying "Name will display here" or some such, to keep it from looking identical to the top box?

There's a 106G synth of a capped p856 gun currently on Catagolue. I've since submitted a 104G synth in several different forms (the following is a synthesis in which the p8 segments are created continuously, since that's what the site currently has for the 106G synth) but the site has rejected it each time - any reason why?

There's a 106G synth of a capped p856 gun currently on Catagolue. I've since submitted a 104G synth in several different forms (the following is a synthesis in which the p8 segments are created continuously, since that's what the site currently has for the 106G synth) but the site has rejected it each time - any reason why?
Mainly I'd suggest keeping a very clear idea of what you're trying to get across to Catagolue. You're not changing either of the last two stages -- those are in there already -- so there's no point in resubmitting those stages. You just want to get that initial stage improved from the current 68G recipe for the same thing, down to 66G.

I could be wrong, but I would still suspect that Catagolue might be chopping up that initial stage incorrectly, maybe due to the almost seventy blank columns a little right of center. This wouldn't be a problem if you submitted that part of the synthesis in more separate stages.

You've already gotten a 23G two-galaxy stage accepted, but it has one too many gliders. So try fixing that --

Code: Select all

x = 128, y = 43, rule = B3/S23

-- and then work up gradually to the four-galaxy stage, and then add the blockers, either all at once or one at a time. That way if there's still a problem, at least you'll be able to narrow it down to something much more specific.
