Is there any page on Catagolue that lists all of the still lives with a particular glider cost?
I am tentatively considering myself back.

You can download /textcensus/b3s23/synthesis-costs (21 megabytes) and then filter through that yourself.

Why do some of the costs seem to be 100,000,000,000,000,000 too high?

Edit: Many of these are constellations, not strict still lives. How do I filter those out?

That's a display trick, to put all of the strict objects before the pseudos without affecting their apparent cost. Filter out everything that isn't above that ridiculous number.

I came across two posts about the use of colours in catagolue, which LifeWiki doesn't mention:

tod222 wrote:What do the colors signify in the root column on the haul pages?
Brown = newly uploaded, not yet processed
Colours between brown and green = various stages in the verification/committing process
Green = this haul has been committed to the census
Red = this haul failed a statistical test, it is not included in the census
Blue = this haul contains something special, it is being permanently preserved (green hauls are deleted after a while)

I know that, but WHAT symmetries are they?
If by "button colors" you mean the sample soup link bullets, the colors are computed by taking the first six hex digits of the SHA-256 hash of the symmetry, and interpreting them as an RGB color value.

For instance, D8_4 hashes to "a621fb6a4036736e5b2e468c69d5cee9cfbef98b27200d4a9cca1f2ee3345291", so the color used for that symmetry is #A621FB, a brilliant purple.

Converting a given color back to the corresponding symmetry is left as an exercise for the reader.
But these are a bit old. Has there been any change since?

Will there ever be an effort to sanitize existing content on catagolue where appropiate?

I'm looking over my contributions from last year (just now finally getting back to submitting hauls...) and I'm realizing - I have a lot of blue hauls, but what's special about them?

It'd be nice if, when looking over a haul, I could see any objects found in that haul where I have a "discovery" - it'd be a lot easier to eyeball-grep for "first" or "fourteenth" or whatever, than just start clicking on things to see how many of them have been found in C1. :D

A similar problem exists when I'm looking at my user page - I have a bunch of discoveries, but it doesn't tell me when I found them. It'd be nice to see the actual date where I found that neat double BLSE, for example. And it'd also be cool to know "hey, what's the first thing I discovered?"

Replace 'object' with 'attribute' in that URL:

https://catagolue.hatsya.com/attribute/ ... 4a56/b3s23

and it tells you:

Code: Select all

Welcome to the forum, (though you are much earlier contributing Catagolue search than me.)(2019.12 vs 2020.6)

There has a trick to display all discovery date and username. just replace object with attribute in url.
like: https://catagolue.hatsya.com/attribute/ ... 4a56/b3s23
it clearly displayed that:

Code: Select all

It looks like sometimes Catagolue skips soups, and because of this, I cannot find out the time of the first discovery of something.
Examples:
1.
https://catagolue.hatsya.com/object/xs9 ... 23-qy4irtz
There are no sample soups stored in the Catagolue, though it has 72804 occurrences in C4_1 census.
Example:

Code: Select all

x = 31, y = 31, rule = B3aijnq5e6k/S23-qy4irtz

2.
https://catagolue.hatsya.com/object/xq2_23ee/b37s35
It has 2830 occurences.
Oh, cgoler2 got ahead of me. But these are specific examples too (but in OCA).
Bug or optimization?
3, another thing.
https://catagolue.hatsya.com/object/xq2 ... 74/b3s3578
When I'm trying to change "object" to "attribute", Catagolue says:

Code: Select all

*** xq2_473j88j374 ***
Why no discoverer?
It was found by Majestas32 (2018-03-23).

It's an optimization. Would you prefer looking at every sample soup of the block or not looking at every one?

1.
My own Q, why does cata sometimes only shows a specific number of soups that is not 500?
e.g.

Code: Select all

https://catagolue.hatsya.com/object/xs8_32qk/b3s23
2.
I think this one was discussed, but I'm not the one who remembers where it is. (related to ikpx2 and a puffer)
3.
Pretty usual, These usually happen, probably because that object is too common. https://catagolue.hatsya.com/attribute/ ... 8kc/b38s23
Edit:

Not quite actually, since you're not calcyman himself (and probably didn't ask him about this before), and 2830 isn't something very common, I guess

This is indeed a neat trick. But my thought was more like, "I have this haul that is apparently significant, but why?" I think that pointing to a specific object was a misguided attempt at an example on my part. :D

In this picture, I show the end of a 1001 object haul. How can I easily tell which one is the one I "discovered?" Currently, I have to go back to Discoveries, make sure I've clicked on every object I've discovered so far, and then I can look at any link that get added to my list that hasn't been followed. I have no way to tell that the second object from the last is the significant one.

Ultimately, my "feature request" here is to add two columns to the haul and discoveries views - date of discovery and ordinal (the latter for hauls only, since it's already in the discoveries list.) And then populate those columns in the haul view for any objects that are significant.

Hopefully not too off-topic, but I feel I should mention this based on something someone said to me on the Discord:
I'm really approaching my use of apgsearch as a game of sorts. I've been playing with CGoL for many many years because I think it's neat, but you're never going to catch me doing a glider synthesis, constructing a spaceship by hand or with a tool, or generally contributing to this in any scholarly manner. My "complaints," such that they are, stem from the root of all incremental games - I want to see numbers go up and neat stuff associated with it. :)

Give it as many threads as you can give it using -p at the command line. Also make sure your computer is set for "high performance" in power settings - that bit me HARD when I was working on my setup.

Edit from 2023 for the above: on newer Windows Server OSes, there's ALSO a setting for the CPU scheduler that affects performance badly - you'll want to look it up, but what I used was "bcdedit /set hypervisorschedulertype Classic" to set it to the "old" style of scheduling on top of doing the "High Performance" tweak above.

If you're relatively proficient with Windows, you may consider installing a VM and sticking apgsearch on Linux. If it's a scratch machine dedicated to doing apgsearch, just go and install Linux on it. Others have had luck with WSL (Windows Subsystem for Linux) but I've never personally used it so I can't say whether it's better or worse.

On my setup, I'm averaging ~25k soups/second per 7 cores:

Code: Select all

apgsearch5: Average soups/sec: 24700.784 Current soups completed: 3300000
apgsearch1: Average soups/sec: 25306.156 Current soups completed: 199800000
apgsearch6: Average soups/sec: 24771.074 Current soups completed: 30000000
apgsearch3: Average soups/sec: 24773.977 Current soups completed: 124200000
apgsearch7: Average soups/sec: 25993.119 Current soups completed: 94200000
apgsearch8: Average soups/sec: 25319.361 Current soups completed: 68400000
apgsearch2: Average soups/sec: 24754.541 Current soups completed: 106200000
apgsearch4: Average soups/sec: 24448.056 Current soups completed: 164100000

Overall Average soups/sec: 25008.3835
Total soups/sec: 200067.068
Each machine is a VM with 8 cores assigned, 7 in use. Processor is an Epyc 7502 running at 2.83GHz (currently.) I'm currently using Void Linux (the glibc version) as an operating system - it's delightfully stripped-down by default. Barely any overhead at all.

If your speed is comparable, it's pretty likely that you'll be able to get 10k/s or better out of a 6-core i5 (assuming it's not a laptop processor.)

I have just submitted them as-is, but separating individual steps containing large gaps. Can someone tell me if they are successfully stored?

Nope. Tried to modify them myself and it didn't work either. Listed on Gitlab for now.

In what symmetries can you qualify for badges and discoveries? I found the second occurrence of an xs30 in C2_2 a few days ago, and yesterday I found a phoenix 1 in C2_4, but on my use page it doesn't list me as having the conchita badge, and it doesn't say I discovered anything. Do discoveries only count in C1 or G1?

They only count in C1 or G1. I also want there to be a copperhead badge on Catagolue.
