Are normal subgroups ever important to Life?

Assuming finite patterns, the hierarchy of normal subgroups of spatial symmetries is:
  • Every symmetry to itself
  • Every symmetry to C1
  • Every symmetry to index-2 sub-symmetry
  • D8_1 to C2_1
  • D8_4 to C2_4
Does this have any significance?
